Fierce Mohawk Style for Natural Hair

Posted by CURLYNIKKI |

NikG of BeadsBraidsBeyond dishes on ways to keep baby girl's natural hair healthy and beautiful, without pulling yours out!

Mohawks are a fun way to switch up your little ones hair style!

Valentine Heart Mohawk:
I know it's a little early for Valentine's Day hair but I saw this heart cornrow style on Youtube
and decided to give it a try. I ended up cornrowing it into a mohawk instead. You can view her tutorial here. I forgot to curve the second cornrow, but I think it still came out cute. I bought some pink heart beads the other day so I added a few of those along with some regular beads. I used shea butter mixed with coconut oil and a little ORS Lock & Twist gel.

TIP: When doing styles that require a lot of moving, sit in your office/desk chair (assuming it has wheels) this makes it easy for mom to move around instead of getting up, then sitting down, and hurting your back in the process.

Simple Mohawks:

This first one took 5 minutes. Start with detangled hair, section off 3 parts of the hair and tie off each section with a Goody Ouchless hair tie. You may need more sections depending on how much hair your child has.

This next one took about 20 minutes. Start with detangled hair, part the hair straight down the middle, your part does not have to be perfect because the part will not be visible. Start parting medium/large sections, start cornrowing from the sides going into the middle. As you can see, my cornrows were far from perfect, I did this as fast as I could, and it still turned out pretty cool. Remember, if you do not know how to cornrow, check out this website. I learned how to cornrow from their simple instructions!

Twisted Mohawk:

Part 2 sections of hair, so you will have 3 sections in all. Tie each section off with Ouchless Goody hair ties and two strand twist the ponytails, add beads/barrettes and you're done!

The cornrows I added to the first twisted section are optional. They kind of give the style a little more flare. Just part a couple of sections of hair going up into the ponytail on each side and cornrow them.

Rockstar Mohawk:

This style can take between 1 1/2-2 hours. I split her hair down the middle (remember, your part will not be visible so it doesn't have to be perfect) and tied one side off, then I started cornrowing. I rotated from a straight cornrow, to criss cross cornrows until I got to the top, then I started on the other side..

Andrea Reviews CURLS

Posted by CURLYNIKKI |

Hey Nikki,

I am having such GREAT results with my Curls products that I had to share! In June I purchased CURLS Goddess Glaze and a few samples of the Geles'c, Coconut Sublime Conditioner, and Quenched Curls Moisturizer. The Goddess Glaze is my ABSOLUTE favorite styling product. I finally have my daily styling routine down..and it's only 4 products!! To get all of these looks I co-washed with my favorite conditioner (HH, Tresesmme Curls, or Pantene Curls) and rinsed 90% of the conditioner out. I personally just don't like the build up on my scalp. I then put these products on:

1. Infusium 23 Leave In
2. EVOO: about a quarter size to each side...work through hair
3. Lustrasilk Sheabutter + Mango- a scoop on each side and finger comb it through
4. CURLS Goddess Glaze: About 4 pumps on each side...depends on the day

and TA-DA!! MY hair looked amazing the whole summer. I got so many compliments when I went out and people kept touching my curls. =D

I was not a fan of the Geles'c...it made my hair feel like straw, but curlies on YouTube rave about it!! So I guess it just depends. I am planning to buy the CURLS Milkshake to replace the Lustrasilk....I'll let you know how that goes!!

Hope this helps!

Have you tried the CURLS line? What did you think?

Hello Everyone,

I have been transitioning since June 2009 and plan on doing my BC on my 1 year anniversary June 2010, yay!! My question(s): how should the BC be done; wet or dry hair, conditioned before the cut or after, scissors or clippers? I'm not sure what hair type I have but if I were to guess I would say 4a or 4b not really sure. I am puzzled on which is the correct and best way to do the big chop.

Thanks!

So ladies, help her out! Share your experiences (good or bad), and what worked best for you and your curls on that glorious day.

Happy Monday!

Aren't we fortunate that the divas of CN.com are so forthcoming with their beauty secrets?! If it wasn't for these creative styling tutorials, I'd be doomed to a life of buns and twist-outs!

Without further ado, check out this Pin Curl tutorial by Tiashauntee...

videoAlign Center

This style is so easy to do and is actually a two in one. You can do the pin curls and wear them that way and/or remove the hair pins and let your curls cascade.

When I was wearing my press n curl all the time I would do pin curls across the top and wear them with a bun in the back.

A few days later I would take my hair down and I would have some awesome waves going on....the best part - NO HEAT.

For more pics of this style please visit my FOTKI

Maybe she'll do a vid or provide a step by step tutorial on her gorgeous Twist Bun next! Hint, hint ;)

Hola Chicas!

Lately, I've been experimenting with the effects of different oils on my braid-outs. Here's what I found:

Coconut Oil- Leaves my hair less defined, but very soft, fluffy, and LARGE. It has no hold, but I love the result! I learned a while ago that my curls hate coconut oil when applied wet...but my dry hair adores it. I usually have to re-braid every night when using coconut oil only, due to the lack of definition. Non-greasy.

Castor Oil-I've been using Oyin's Burnt Sugar with great success, and the main ingredient is castor oil. It leaves me with the most defined, thick looking braid-outs. My hair appears (totally an illusion) heavy and thick, but feels light, and non-greasy to the touch. This has become my favorite, and the set holds for two days! Castor oil really is magical ;-)

Shea Butter- You all know that shea butter was a main stay in my wet styling routine. Now that I do dry braid-outs, it's a bit too heavy. I've been using Oyin's Whipped Shea Butter, and it leaves my hair greasy and stringy. I hate greasy braid-outs because I can't fluff them without causing the ugly kind of frizz. Plus, greasy hair is not a good look.

Which oils do you like on your dry hair? Which do you prefer to apply to wet hair? How do you think my dry hair would take to Olive Oil?

Dry as the Desert...

Posted by CURLYNIKKI |

Hola Chicas!

I just came from hanging out with FrizzCurls427 and we realized that we've been battling the same problem lately... unforgivably dry curls! My hair is so friggin' dry! I mean parched, dried out, crunchy...just plain icky. Granted, I'm not wetting it much these days, mainly due to boredom and laziness, but I mean, DANG, it's DRY. I figure it could be from 1 of a few things:

1. Fewer co-washes- Which also means fewer deep treatments

2. Winter winds- I wear my hair out 99% of the time. Maybe there really is something to that protective styling that long haired naturals speak so highly of.

3. The wrong products- I've strayed from my faithful products lately and maybe I need to go back to what I know (DevaCare).

4. Protein laden products- I've been experimenting with products that contain light, naturally derived proteins. In the past, protein play resulted in dry, crunchy curls. Which brings me back to number 3... if it ain't broke...

Dryness left to fester results in split ends and breakage. I've tried to stave off splits by doing a trim, but I need to get proactive!

This dry styling routine has resulted in less shedding, and my hair seems to be doing good overall. The dryness is just so annoying... it's up in a bun today, and I plan to rock it out like this for the next few days. Blah.

So, are you dry too? If so, what's your best guess at the cause, and what do you plan to do about it?!

Later Gators,
Nik

CN: How long have you been natural?
I’ve been natural for about 5 months and some change now. I BC’d after 9 months of transitioning on June 26; the day after MJ’s passing (love and miss you Michael). I’ll be celebrating my 6 month nappiversary soon!

CN: What is your current regimen?
Ha I wish I even knew. I’m always changing it up for what I think I may need. But my consistent regimen is washing with Herbal Essences Drama Clean and conditioning with Pantene Pro-v Nature Fusion Smooth Vitality. I also deep treat with Hair Cholesterol or Henna n’ Placenta which works really well for my hair.

CN: How do you maintain length? Moisture?
For length I put my hair in twists/plaits any chance I get and then when they get old I rock a TWA twist-out. Everyone’s been noticing my hair growth which proves that keeping your hair in twists or braids for a while really does give it a break and lets it grow. For moisture, well I usually keep in moisture pretty well after I wash & condition by applying Shine Serum and Garnier Fructis Sleek n’ Shine leave-in conditioner. I also always have my Shea Butter moisturizer or my Olive Oil moisturizer nearby just in case I feel like my hair needs some extra conditioning.

CN: How do you protect your curls a night?

Satin Bonnets and Satin Scarves are my best friends. If I’m sporting a twist/braid-out, I usually just put on my satin bonnet or tie it up with a satin scarf and put my bonnet on top of it. But If my hair is just regular, I usually put it in 6-7 braids or sideways cornrows (to avoid breakage) and then put on my satin scarf/bonnet..whichever feels necessary at the time. Oh! And I also have a satin pillowcase cause I am a crazy sleeper and will sometimes find my scarf halfway off my head in the morning haha!

CN: What would you tell a new natural, or transitioning diva?

You go girl! Keep experimenting with that hair and trying to find what’s best for it. I’m JUST beginning to realize that just because a style or product works wonders for someone else, doesn’t mean that it’ll be the same for you. Certain styles come out well on others and look a hot mess on me and the same goes with products. Be oh so patient with your hair and take the time to figure out your special needs and what takes your hair to its best.

CN: What's the best thing about being naturally glamorous?

The hair compliments! Everyone loves my hair, white and black friends. Sometimes I have to shoo them away from playing in my hair too much so they won’t mess it up! But another thing is the confidence of having my natural, God-given texture. I can’t even explain it. There’s just this pride that comes with rocking my own curls. I love my hair so much and am never going back.

CN: Anything else you want to add?

I was reading an article on natural hair that I’ve had for awhile and I wanted to share this cute poem:

Nappy Head

These dancing spirals around my head

twists and kink

curling frizzingly at the ends

into a shiny halo of beautiful African hair.

And you call it nappy?”

Natural Hair and Box Braids

Posted by CURLYNIKKI |

NikG of BeadsBraidsBeyond dishes on ways to keep baby girl's natural hair healthy and beautiful, without pulling yours out!

Box braids are great for children. They are also very versatile and can last for weeks!

I put some small box braids (with a few cornrows on the side) in A's hair a couple of weeks ago. This was done on dry hair, I used shea butter mixed with coconut oil and it took around 3 hours.. She was sleeping when I did half of the top. We watched Dora and some of her other favorite cartoons, and we also took breaks.

These box braids lasted A two whole weeks! We couldn't find her satin bonnet during that time, so I would imagine if your little one sleeps with a bonnet/satin pillowcase this would last even longer. During these two weeks I would rub a little Giovanni Direct Leave-in over her braids and add shea butter mixed with coconut oil on her ends. When I started to see some frizz I smoothed some Curl Gel-les'C over her braids.

I curled A's ends a few days later with flexi-rods. I left the flexi-rods in for about 40 minutes. I was actually trying to curl the braid but the flexi-rods kept falling out. It still turned out cute.

We changed the style up quite often. Pigtails, side ponytail, curled braids, top half up and the back down.

After 1 week I washed A's braids with Organix Coconut Milk shampoo and Herbal Essence Hello Hydration conditioner. After washing her hair, I set her (wet) braids with Curlformers. I put between 2-4 braids in each Curlformer. We loved the results!

A few days later I put her Curlformer braids in pigtails.

After two weeks I took her braids down. I wet her hair and loaded it up with Herbal Essence Hello Hydration conditioner and used the end of the metal rat tail comb. It took almost 1 1/2 hours to take her braids down. She was asleep half of the time.

Meet the lovely LeChatRouge... a natural vet with a simple routine.

CN: How long have you been natural?
I will have been natural for four years as of March 2010.

CN: What is your current regimen?
I'm currently keeping it as simple as possible. I have dandruff, so I'm using J/A/S/O/N dandruff shampoo per the directions (it's more of a creme that you massage into your scalp than what most think of as a shampoo) and supplementing otherwise with co-washes as needed with whatever conditioner I have on hand.

I'm focusing a lot on retaining moisture during the winter months and am using protective styles. I deep condition every two weeks (currently using Blended Beauty Herbal Reconditioner, but otherwise just add honey and olive oil to whatever conditioner I have on hand) and moisturize with a whipped shea concoction I made with unrefined shea butter, some organic coconut oil and a few drops of almond essential oil. It makes using the shea butter much easier and I use it head to toe. My skin and hair love it.

To refresh my hair in the mornings I spritz with a mixture of H2O, Blended Beauty Natural Hair Oil (that I've had for a few years), and Infusium 23 Frizzologic. Also, I like to spray my scalp with Jamaican Mango & Lime Medicated Anti-Itch Gro Spray.

CN: How do you maintain length? Moisture?
To maintain length, I only manipulate my hair when wet and detangle when soaked in conditioner. I keep my hair constantly moisturized with shea butter, especially when it's in protective styles. I use my homemade spritz daily and apply oil as needed to my ends. The only time I use heat is indirectly during deep conditioning.

CN: How do you protect your curls a night?
I sleep in a satin bonnet every night.

CN: What would you tell a new natural, or transitioning diva?
It's very easy to get overwhelmed by all of the information (and misinformation) out there about natural hair, so just do what makes YOU comfortable and your hair feel fabulous. It definitely doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. Also, you'll see product reviews and regimes by many many people; remember that everyone's hair is unique and that what works for them may not work for you. Most importantly, enjoy the journey and discovery!

CN: What's the best thing about being naturally glamorous?
There are so many things! I have more versatility with my natural hair than during my 15 years as a permie. I feel more alive, confident and proud and am looking forward to sharing my future childrens' (should I be blessed to have some) hair journeys and the knowledge I have amassed during my own adventure.

Ms. G-- A Story of Transition

Posted by CURLYNIKKI |

CN: Were you a long term or short term transitioner, and why?
I would consider myself to be a long term transitioner. I transitioned for a year from November 2008 – November 2009. I would have gone longer, but I got tired of the weave(s) (I had three weaves done in 2009) and every time I would take one out, I would fall more in love with my own hair texture.

CN: When did you BC? What was your initial reaction to your natural hair?
I BC’d in the beginning of November 2009 and since I had been stalking curlynikki’s web site for over a year, I already had all of my products and materials ready to try my first T-n-C; which didn’t exactly turn out just how I imagined but I was still pleased with the results.

CN: How did family and friends react to the new you? What was your response to them?
My family and friends accepted my new hair and have liked most of the styles I've done. I think I get the most “looks” from some of the older people in my family wondering why I want to wear my hair out “nappy”. I just don’t think about it because I know that this is something that makes me happy and something I’m doing for me and my hair.

CN: What was your transition routine?
So far I’ve henna’d about 5 times and I did this in five consecutive weeks, seeing that they say that you see the best results after multiple applications. I plan on now just doing the henna about once a month. I deep condition with Aubrey Organics HSR once a week. During the week I will either wear a twist out, braid out, pony puff or flat twist and bun in the back. I will spray my hair throughout the week with my own concoction of Devacare One, Coconut Oil, Olive Oil and water if I feel like its getting a little dry.
My main products are:
Aubrey Organics HSR or Organix Coconut Milk Conditioner – Deep Conditioner (once a week) Kinky Curly Come Clean – Shampoo (every two weeks) Herbal Essence HH or TT – (once or twice a week depending on what I’m doing on the weekend) Kinky Curly Knot Today or DevaCare One – Leave-in Shea Butter & Unrefined Coconut Oil to seal my ends.

CN: What was your staple hair style during the transition?
In the beginning of my transition (about the first 5 months) I would flat iron my hair. Then I started getting weaves around April-November. So I didn’t do too much to my hair during those times. Every time I would take the weave out I would cut some of the relaxed hair out. Although, I did have a lot of heat damage from the part of my hair that was left out of the weave.

CN: Why did you choose to go natural?

I chose to go natural because I wanted healthy hair and I wanted to see my hair grow out to BSL (when straight). Sometimes I wonder if my hair can get that long seeing that it will usually get right above the bra strap and stop, LOL. I never really knew how damaging relaxers, heat, and certain products were to my hair until I visited this site. Now, I’m on the natural hair mission just to have full luxurious healthy hair.
