Scalp Massage & Stimulation for Hair Growth

by Dr. Phoenyx Austin

Are scalp massages part of your hair care regimen?

They’re part of mine! I love scalp massages. I’m addicted to them. I love giving them to myself and I love receiving them.

Scalp massages have been used for over 5,000 years ago as part Ayurvedic medicine. Ayurvedic medicine is a form of alternative medicine that focuses on preventing and treating disease with noninvasive therapies like nutrition, herbal therapy, mediation, massage and yoga. The premise of Ayurvedic medicine is that disease is the result of physical, mental and spiritual imbalance. And scalp massages (along with massages in general) are a method to restore balance and improve our health.

Interestingly enough, scalp massages also have the ability to affect us biochemically by stimulating the release of endorphins and serotonin. These are known as the feel good hormones. Furthermore, scalp massages also stimulate blood flow in the scalp, improve blood flow to hair follicles and promote hair growth.

So if you weren’t hip the scalp massage game, now you know! It’s very simple. Just place the pads of your fingers on your scalp and massage in a circular motion- make sure that your fingers come into complete contact with your scalp. And don’t forget to massage your temples, the nape of your neck and your shoulders. Many of us carry a lot of tension in our posterior neck and shoulders.

And FYI, you can also boost the benefits of a scalp massage by adding aromatherapy to the mix. Just add a few drops of essential oil to your favorite hair oil (or a carrier oil). Shake it up. Apply the oil directly to your scalp and let those fingers get to work!

Personally, I really enjoy scalp massages with essential oils like peppermint and spearmint. These are both oils that open up blood vessels, stimulate blood flow to hair follicles and give the scalp a cool, tingly feeling. Hmmmmm tingly feeling….

So how does that sound? Ready for a scalp massage?

Ok then ladies! Time to get to work- Less talk, more fingers!

Do you do scalp massages to stimulate healthy hair growth?

I do scalp massages about 4 times per week. I have a variety of oils that I use depending on what fragrance and degree of moisture my hair cries for.

Didn't realize that this can release endorphins! I usually get my endorphin "fix' by high intensity cardio and then do the scalp massage afterwards to help my hair airdry. Nice to know that my habits are acting in synch with each other!

I love scalp massage and have always wanted to try with EO but am not knowledgeable enough about them yet to use on my scalp. I believe that massage stimulates circulation but have never believed that that in turn stimulates hair growth, that was always an urban legend for me.
