Curly Caregivers- A Book Scholarship

LAST DAY TO APPLY!
GOOD LUCK CURLIES!

Most of you know me as CurlyNikki - natural hair advocate and Gia’s slave mom. But if you couldn’t tell from the ‘on the couch’ theme, I’m also The Licensed Psychotherapist Formerly known as Alicia (my gub’ment name). And as inspired by Prince, I'm working on a symbol... hmm, maybe a fro. But I digress.

I work primarily with women struggling with issues related to interpersonal relationships, anxiety, depression, body image disorders and PTSD. When the Hubs and I finally pick a city and stay put, I have plans to open my own practice. Psychology is my first love and no matter where this fantabulous CurlyNikki ride takes me, I will always be a therapist.

With that, I can’t tell you how many emails I’ve received from excited high school seniors and college students that are interested in becoming counselors. The email is usually very reminiscent of 21 questions and my response is always the same- ‘let’s jump on a call’. I love talking to and encouraging ‘the future’ and hope that sharing my experiences- the good and the bad- can help make their journey smoother.

So to continue in that vein, I thought it only necessary to create a scholarship for all the aspiring helpy helpertons out there… the soon to be therapists and social workers of the world. Curly Caregivers, if you will. And if you’re anything like I was, you’re an amazing, hardworking student… but only when it comes to paper deadlines and surprise reading quizzes… less so when it comes to the daunting challenge of identifying and applying for much needed college funds. With all the transcript gathering, recommendation requesting and essay composing, I thought it’d be fun to create a scholarship that I would’ve been willing to apply for!

My issue every semester was finding the cash to purchase the ridiculously overpriced textbooks, edition 1 for the first half of class, edition 2 for the latter, and the $100 flash cards all written by (surprise surprise) my professor. So to save you at least that headache, my friends at Qhemet Biologics and I present... CurlyNikki’s Curly Caregivers Book Scholarship!

Two, One-Thousand dollar scholarships donated by Qhemet Biologics will be awarded to students enrolled full-time in any year of their college career (undergraduate or graduate) in a field related to psychology.

Interested students will email video submissions to contests@curlynikki.com.

The video should include-

(1) the reason you chose psychology or a related field of study
(2) where you see yourself in 5 years, and
(3) why the CurlyNikki community should choose YOU!

In the email, include-

(1) your full name
(2) year in school
(3) institution
(4) GPA
(5) major Field of Study

You have to read the next part in that really fast, slightly hushed, 'fine print' announcer voice:

To be eligible, you must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen, be currently enrolled in a degree seeking program and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Winners will be asked to verify all of the above. Curly men are invited to apply as well!

The application process is open from today, December 21, 2011 through December 30, 2011 at 5pm EST. At that time, a team of reviewers will select five curlies to advance to the final round. The five videos will be showcased on CurlyNikki.com from January 2nd- January 6th for a democratic voting process by the community. The two curlies with the most votes, after a short verification process, will each receive a check for $1000 made out to their respective colleges.

Be creative, genuine… go H.A.M.!

God Speed!
Nik

Work that calling on your life!!!

This is awesome! I work at a scholarship non profit and rarely do we have funding available for pyschology majors! Most donors are throwing money at STEM and business majors!

Thanks ladies for the feedback!

It will be an ongoing program!!! Of everything I had planned for 2011, I'm most proud of this.

Nikki, your awesomeness just gets awesomer by the day! (Yeah I made up some words, we are all family right?)..I am a graduate student studying Business Administration, so I am so far from qualified for this scholarship! Nonetheless, I am all for it, and rooting everyone on! NikRocks.

This idea warms my heart and makes me love CN community all the more. Thank you Nik for all you do. we love you!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Thank you for doing this. This is a great way to help people. Maybe next time students who are studying part-time can also be included in this? There are many students who can only afford to study part-time and would also benefit from this scholarship. Thanks again for supporting people ths way. You are truly an amazing person.

CurlyRay said...

YAAAY!! is there a time limit on the videos????

CURLYNIKKI said...

Hiyah folks!

1. There is no time limit... just know that you need to make your video appealing/interesting as the CN community will be voting! Succinct is usually best!
2. Psych or related fields only... not minors and you must be interested in working as a therapist/counselor/social worker. All levels of college (undergrad, grad) are encouraged to apply!

good luck! I'm so excited!!!!

I will be graduating in May with my M.S. in Clinical Mental Health (what, what!!). While I do not plan on entering the contest since I am almost done, I think this is an awesome idea and I commend you for EVERYTHING that you do "Alicia" ;-). This is a great opportunity and will be so helpful to some one out there. Now, we need to create a monthly online meet-up (group therapy session) for all of us curlies in the helping profession...hmmmmm...

CURLYNIKKI said...

I LOVE that idea Jada! You should spearhead that! Maybe we can start a new space in the forum!

CURLYNIKKI said...

Oh and CONGRATS boo! Are you going for your license immediately? What population will you work with?

LadyV69 said...

I graduated college with a Psych degree nearly 20 years ago, but good luck to all those that enter. What a way to pay it forward. God bless Nikki!

Jada07 said...

Thanks! I'll get right on it...okay, not RIGHT on it but I will develop the idea further and see what I come up with; I like the forum format, maybe even going so far as a video/web chat aspect as well. I am taking the NCE in April but I probably won't start working in the field immediately because I don't want to leave my current employer high and dry since they stuck by me these last 3 years and have been very accomodating. I would like to work in the College/University setting, although I am doing my internship at a substance use facility.

Nik - simply fabulous! Hats off to you. I am so proud of all you do for all the "communities" that you touch. Congratulations and blessings to you and Qhmets!

Kudos to you, Nik, for investing in the future! Though I am a graduate student pursuing my PhD in Organizational Psychology I'll leave this one to the undergrads...good luck ladies (and gents)!

CURLYNIKKI said...

Nice! I too stuck with my old employer for a while after graduation (a non profit MH advocacy agency). I did mental health advocacy in the African American community... mostly outreach and speech giving at HBCUs and churches. That was fun work but I really wanted to be one on one with clients. So after about another year, I quit and went into mental health!

CURLYNIKKI said...

Thanks Rhonda C! xoxoxo I feel like I know we... we chat so often! Glad you approve :)

@Anjealin, thanks chica!

This is what it's all about. Kudos to Nikki for giving of herself. Good luck scholars!

Nikki (Alicia I knew that :D) You always amaze me! I still remember our convo about my long term career goals. The book you recommended me to read the "Feeling Good" book by Dr. David Burns! was awesome and I loved it. When I go back for my licensure I will definitely apply for the scholarship :D thanks Nikki!!!

ChicaRizada94 said...

This is great! I'm not going to be a psychology major, but I'm double majoring in accounting & Spanish. It's tough finding scholarships...like a PP stated, most money is thrown at STEM fields (which I appreciated when I was considering chemistry, but not now) :-/ People don't appreciate the non-technical fields nearly as much as they should...

Anonymous said...

OMFeakingG! Nikki this is exemplary! I hope God continues to bless and keep you.

I LOVE YOU NIKKI!!!
Not only are you an angel as a natural hair sista and proud mama, but to have a scholarship specifically for the future caregivers is such a wonderful thing for you to do! As a first year student in an MA counseling program, I have been looking at your site for hairspiration and relaxation for months(to keep from pulling mine out due to stress!). Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU for showing some love to those who want to be psyhotherapists/counselors/caregivers to the community!

Bravo Wendy on your post regarding your son's response to your natural kinky curly hair. I use to say to my son don't bring any girl home who can't use my comb and he would laugh and say " uhmm mommie your hair is straight." So, that statement had no affect at that time but now that I'm going the natural route I don't feel silly when i repeAt the same statement-lol. I think once we show how much we love our natural selves our sons will get the message.

I'm back in school after being away for years and my 2.7 GPA reflects the mistakes that I made when I was younger. I'm 31, married, focused, and getting straight A's now. I hope this opportunity comes around again next year once I've had enough classes to bring me up to 3.0+!

mmharp said...

UGH! I am so mad with myself! I totally had the deadline wrong! But good luck with everyone! Can't wait to see the submissions!

As a licensed clinical social worker (therapy is my passion), I am so glad to see you have decided to provide this scholarship! I can only hope that more individuals will pursue careers in the helping profession. Despite the fact that most of us in this line of work tend to be overworked and underpaid, there are ways to make a great living while pursuing your passion!
