Oprah's Natural Hair on 'O Magazine' Cover!

From Oprah.com-
For the first time ever, Oprah's appearing on the cover of O without blow-drying or straightening her hair. She says that wearing her hair naturally—as she often does on weekends and on vacation—makes her feel unencumbered. But there was a time when she wanted to just cut it all off. "I wanted to wear it close-cropped a la Camille Cosby but her husband Bill convinced me otherwise. 'Don’t do it,' he said. 'You’ve got the wrong head shape and you’ll disappoint yourself.' I took his advice," she says. Although, never one to shy away from a style update, Winfrey is a firm believer that changing your hairstyle can change what we see and feel is possible. "I even notice a change in my dogs when they get their summer cuts: they’re friskier and livelier, feeling more themselves once the weight of the hair is released."

After all the makeovers she’s done in
O magazine and on TV, Oprah stands firm that the only makeovers that are maintained and sustained are "those in which something inside the receiver clicks, aligning with that which is being received. The only way to real transformation is through the mind."

Don't miss
O's September 2012 makeover issue, on newsstands August 7th.

 CN Says:
*In my Oprah voice*  LOOOOOVE IT!

I also like, 'the only way to a real transformation transition, is through the mind'. #BOOM

I believe the heart are both interlocked because if your heart isn't in what your doing or trying to do how will you get it accomplished. It's easy just to say, but you also have to believe & want it.

Oprah has been natural for a very long time, she just always have it straight. Her hairstylist said that many years ago that she was natural. Cute that this is the first time that she had her natural state shown on her magazine.

Looks great! You know how you see a cover photo but you're more interested in the "on the cover" stories? Can't do that here! She is captivating!

Um, Oprah had an afro when she first started out and when she started her show. And it wasn't curly.

She also sported this look a few years ago. It looks nice but it's not really such a leap from what she's had over the years, plus we all know Oprah plays fast and loose with the photoshop on that magazine cover.

So we've seen Oprah afro'd, Oprah relaxed, Oprah short, Oprah long, Oprah weaved up...and I've seen this look on her before so I'm not sure why everyone is being so brand new about it. Plus, she doesn't have naturally curly natural hair.

People get mad when you point that out but whatever. Somehow I knew it was coming and I expect lots of people to act like this is some amazing move on her part, but she knows that isn't true even if a lot of people here aren't old enough to.

I think Oprah misses her old show and likes getting her name out there from time to time.

I love that Oprah chose to showcase her natural hair on the cover of her magazine but I would like the photo more if there were a bit more styling involved. Maybe it's just my preference but I feel when people see this cover they are going to associate it with negative stereotypes of natural hair being unkempt or "out of control". Which any natural knows that they go through too much for their hair to deemed either of those things. I just would have like for there to have been a little more of a style to her hair rather than the look that she is sporting. But I do really like the fact that she is promoting natural hair.

Love it! It's so massive, huge!

I also remember Oprah's short, tight 'fro from back in the day. Her stylist did reveal many years ago that her hair has been chemical free for a while. I think mutliple blow dry and straightening sessions per week for so many years for her show may have caused heat damage which could have contributed to the looser pattern.
I'm still diggin' it.... it's chemical free; natural.

CurvyCurly said...

Agreed! Major influence...the Oprah effect!

Oprah hair is cool, but she is relaxed. I saw on her OWN channel an episode were she was getting her hair done by her stylish a couple months ago, she held up a organic root simulator relaxer and said, "This is a black girls best friend." My mom and I were shocked to see this I have the DVR so I rewind that mug like four times paused etc. to make sure I seen the relaxer box and what she said lol! That is relaxed hair that has been washed and added product to make it look curly. I am not hating or knocking Oprah because I like her, but she is not natural. I seen her several times with protective style braids like yarn braids when she goes to Africa but not her natural hair.

Did you post this comment on another website??!! Cause I swear this same comment is on another site under a different name??

Depending on the products use our natural hair can appear in a Afro one day and in its curly state the next. I know the style Oprah has been sporting lately looks great, the style she worn interviewing 50 cents and the Miami Heat.

RazzB said...

I doubt it...Oprah has a stylist at her service 24/7 lets not kid ourself into thinking she is twisting at night or condition wash herself! Going natural is a lot of work and a drastic change for your average sister!

Love it. She looks goregous

I love the idea of her doing this, but I have to reluctantly say that I'm not feeling the execution. Her curls look like they're not really curling because they're fried from heat straightening or something. I want to see her rock her big, thick hair in healthy glory.

I was just reading about this last night. I've known that Oprah was natural pretty much from day one of my natural hair journey. I think it's wonderful and I'm just proud to be a part of this natural hair "movement".

I saw the same episode Megan. It was one of her Season 25: Oprah Behind The Scenes shows where she taped her Oscar special in February. Andre definitely applied a relaxer (a box relaxer at that) to her hair. She might be telaxed (not relaxing bone straight) but I don't believe she is 100% natural. I could be wrong but I know what I saw.

keisha billups said...

Love it. She has always had beautiful hair. Go "O". Why is it so controversial about if she is "really" natural or not?? In the end, does it really even matter?? According to the article she isn't blown dry or straightend. Maybe thats her idea of wearing her hair natural.

Ignorance continues to be abound...le sigh

Oprah, girl you betta werkkkk! Loves it! I definitely need to get me a copy of this issue. Looks like the article will be a good read. Sidenote: I wonder will Oprah's BFF Gayle follow in O's footsteps and rock a natural? Things that make you go hmmmmm????

Sue said...

I've seen similar comments on other sites: people saying she must have it texlaxed or that she uses the phytorelaxer, just not on a regular basis. Maybe "natural" in this context means wearing her own hair and not a weave. When Tyra did her big reveal of her hair on her show, it was a similar concept. Just thought I'd offer a different perspective. Chemical free or not, Oprah 's hair is very full and looks nice.

CurvyCurly said...

Sure, Oprah is not twisting at night LOL but I do believe she will have a MAJOR influence on women with textured hair who have considered sporting their natural hair to give it a try because she's such an influential iconic figure.

Thetruthisoutthere said...

"O" looks gorgeous as usual.

Jordan said...

I like the look on her. I think it's a "cornrow"-out type of style. And I agree, that she's probably a Tyra natural (no heat, no weave; yes perm).

Megan M said...

Thanks Jazzy I know what I saw she probably is texlaxed then. I thought people going be like I did not see that. My mom and I are not alone.

Derika said...

I'm not really a fan of Oprah but her hair looks good.

ope-nope said...

Yeah, that's not really her natural hair though. Also, Oprah didn't really do this for black women, because we know that is not her true texture. That cover is so insincere and fake.
