WHAT IS DUSTING?
A dusting is where a very small amount of hair is trimmed off the ends of the hair. So little is removed that it looks like fine dust on the floor. Ends can be dusted to remove splits before they become out of control.
HOW DO I DUST MY HAIR?
1. Take a small section of hair split it in two.
2. Twist the section of hair so that it's neat and smooth. You may notice little hairs that are split poking out from the twist.
3. Dust by trimming just above the split ends.
4. Undo the twist and twist in the opposite direction in order to expose any other splits you may have missed.
5. Repeat this process throughout the entire head. There should only be a light 'dusting' of hair on your counters or floor.
NOTES
*One should dust their hair every 6 to 8 weeks to keep split ends under control.
* Hair shears are the proper tool for this process. Please keep your craft scissors far from your hair.
* Be sure to dust your hair under adequate natural lighting for best results.
* A beauty mirror with a magnified side is your best friend for those sections that are hard to see.

CurlyNikki Says:
I know I'm overdue for a trim when detangling becomes a beast, and when I too easily run across split ends. So once every two months, I dust or micro-trim after my hair has been twisted. I survey the ends of each twist, and snip off the last 1/8 - 1/4 of an inch. This keeps my ends neat and detangling sessions quick, while maintaining maximum length. I trim more depending on the state of my ends and how long it’s been since the last session.
In between dusting sessions, “search and destroy” missions keep my ends sharp. I conduct “search and destroys” whenever I happen to grab a curl and can see more than a split end or two without straining. I do this while sitting in front of the TV, standing in the bathroom mirror, or even while on the internet. The lighting in all three situations is perfect! After snipping a few, I become anal and my sessions can last more than an hour. I cut just above the split or jagged end and apply moisturizer and oil as I go. After I finish, I'm usually on my way to re-style because it leaves me with a frizzy, undefined mess.
Be sure to only use hair scissors when trimming. This is VERY important! I purchase my scissors from Walmart, Sally's or Ulta and they usually run me between $10 and $40. I hide them from Hubby and only use them for hair, to keep them sharp as dull scissors can do more harm than good!
p.s. I'm experiencing more single strand knots than usual since I'm currently w&go'ing and I have the nasty habit of snapping them off with my nails. Help me somebody! lol!

Bad Nikki!!!!!
I have never done dustiing before but like you I do twist my hair and trim the bottom 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch when I see the need (not nearly as often as I should). Plus I have never been to a hairdresser since I've be natural which is over 18 years with the exception of the two times that I relaxed and almost immediately big chopped again. So I guess that makes me bad too!!! LOL
P.S. My Zoe wants to meet you and your Boogie
Would you recommending dusting a TWA? Or wait until the length is shoulder/collar bone?
I really want to start trimming my own ends, but I do not understand what you mean by twisting. Is it a two strand twist or just a section of hair in a single twist? Thanks
I dust my hair in two strand twists. That method works well for me.
Since I condition my hair every chance I get and I seal my ends, I do not see split ends anymore. Very little breakage also, so I do not dust my ends. I have not trimmed my hair in almost one year and it has never looked better. keep the dryness away.
I'm just like you. I trim about once a year and even then I don't see any split ends. I'm a strictly wng girl and I haven't straightened my hair in almost 3 years. I deep condition every week. I get a few ssk's but i figure that's normal.
Now that I know the technique, I sure will.
This is just what i needed to know...HOW TO TRIM MY OWN HAIR!!
Here we go with the "6 to 8 weeks for a trim/dust" boogie monster again. If someone ALWAYS trimmed, dusted or whatever'ed (lol) their hair faithfully their hair every month and a half they would NEVER see any growth or retention......how about teaching how to CARE for your ends to prevent split ends and dusting/trimming AS NEEDED.....personally for me about every 6 months....
Hey Dprincess 28 on youtube has a video demonstrating it. It begins around the 3:10 mark

Ever since I stopped using heat 6 months ago, I barely ever get split ends, so I hardly trim...only dust!
Does anyone know if you can twist your hair like a rope (around itself)? I find two strand twist to be a little time consuming because my hair is not quite long.
my routine is to trim 1/4 inch every 3-4 months, because that is usually when I start to get alot of ssks and crazy tangling, and my twist outs start to look crazy b/c of my ends.
Overdue for a dusting. I always use this method and try to dust every 6 weeks. This has really helped me retain length.
Super tips!
LOL.........I'm guilty of just looking at my strands and snapping my ends with my finger nails also. I'm definately overdue for a trim.
I've only trimmed my whole head once, back in May. Whenever I twist my hair, I look for ssk's & split ends. If I see them I cut them. For me that works good, and the longer my hair gets, the easier it is to find and take care of them.
I never really trimmed on twists. I have always straighten my hair and got a trim. I did not know until now that you can trim curly hair. Are you suppose to trim on dry or damp twists or blow dried hair?
I am also a wng girl. The less I manipulate my hair, the better. I also pre-poo with any conditioner and coconut oil for about 5-10 minutes before I rinse and wash. This has helped me avoid tangls and split ends. I seal my ends with mineral oil and it works great!
Thanks Ladies!!!!
I've been dusting for the past year or so, maybe every 6-8 weeks. It has really improved the overall appearance and feel of my hair.
Sometimes I will braid or twist my hair in sections and dust that way. Def helps from having to cut off inches at a time. And like Nikki said, I know when detangling has taken the majority time on hair regimen its time to dust, dust away.
