Adding Oils to Your Natural Hair Regimen

by Alicia James of MsAliciaJames.com

I could talk about my love for using oil on my natural hair all day long. I've personally had a long term relationship with extra virgin olive oil, but I don’t discriminate when it comes to coconut oil, avocado oil, grapeseed oil, etc. I've used extra virgin olive oil as a part of my regimen consistently for nearly three years. Before I used any type of oil, my hair looked dull, dry... no excitement at all. Once I started to use oil, my hair came to life, it was bouncy and over time developed a beautiful natural shine! Oil will always be one of the most important parts of my regimen.

Here are three ways I use oil to add shine to my natural hair:

1. Oil Rinse
After I finish washing my hair, I part my hair into two sections. One section on the left and the other on the right side of my head. I take one section at a time and I apply a generous amount of oil focusing mainly on the ends and then massaging up the strands. After I have applied oil to each section I rinse with warm water. I like to leave a small amount of oil in my hair as a leave in. I am careful not to leave too much oil in the hair. This will leave you with weighed down, greasy strands of hair.

2. Deep Conditioning/Hot oil treatment
For my deep conditioning, I mix my rinse out conditioner and extra virgin olive oil. I apply it to my entire head, then sit under a hair dryer for about 15-30 minutes and then rinse thoroughly. I do this at least every two weeks.

3. Apply After Styling
After I complete a hairstyle I like to apply a little extra virgin olive oil to my hair. I just take a small amount and smooth it throughout my entire head. This adds a nice sheen to the hair.
