Tell me about yourself!
My name’s Sarah. I’m a hair and beauty vlogger on YouTube under the screen name waterlily716 and a soon-to-be teacher who just graduated from college. I’m a self-proclaimed hair product junkie originally from Kentucky.

Had you always embraced your texture?
Nope! Prior to the beginning of high school, my hair was constantly up in a bun or a braid. I was around 14 when I started learning how to style and care for my curly hair. Beyond learning the techniques, I also had to accept my hair for what it was…voluminous, temperamental, and very curly! Learning to wear my curls also helped my adolescent self to gain confidence. When people started complimenting my hair it was unsettling at first because of my introverted and shy nature, but eventually it grew into a source of self-esteem for me.

Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper? What was your journey like?
I’ve had my hair in its natural state for my whole life.

How did family and friends react to your decision to go natural? What was your response to them?
When I started wearing my hair down, like I said, I started to get a lot of attention. People were surprised at my hair because they had never seen it before! My family was very supportive though, and some of my relativefriends, evens even ask me for curly hair advice nowadays.

Describe your hair (fine or coarse, thin or thick, highly porous, low, etc.)
My hair is low to normal porosity and medium textured.  And I have a lot of it! My curl pattern is a combination of tighter ringlets and looser S-shaped curls (3a and 3b).

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to your hair?
A year or two ago I dyed my hair red with henna. It was so much fun and the color came out great.

What’s your biggest hair related regret?
I wish I had learned how to style my hair before the beginning of high school. It’s not that hard to slap a leave in and gel on, which is now my everyday hair routine, but back then I just had no idea where to start. This is why I started making YouTube videos. I wanted to provide online curly hair education and help others learn how to embrace and style their curls. ☺

What's your current hair routine? How often do you wash, condition, and style? Favorite products! Deets!
I wash and style my hair every two to three days. In the shower, I use a light conditioner to scrub my scalp and then I apply a thicker conditioner before detangling my curls. I rinse most of my conditioner out and then apply my styling products. I like to smooth and scrunch all of my products on for very clumpy curls, and I avoid combing after the shower. Lastly, I scrunch some of the water out of my hair with a cotton cloth, finger twirl unruly pieces, and then put my hair up into a t-shirt turban (aka a plop). I leave my plop on for about 15 minutes and air dry afterwards. On the days when I don’t have to bother with washing my hair, I spritz my hair with a water/leave in mixture and apply a cream or butter product. I smooth down any frizz, finger twirl some curls, and then walk out the door.

I am a total product junkie so I’ll try to keep this somewhat snappy as far as my favorites go: Suave Naturals Coconut Conditioner (co-wash), Sally’s Beauty knock off version of Matrix Biolage Conditioning Balm (detangler), As I Am Leave-in Conditioner (leave-in conditioner), Curly Hair Solutions Curl Keeper (sealer/frizz preventer), Jessicurl Spiralicious gel (holding gel), Curl Junkie Curl Rehab Moisturizing Treatment (deep conditioner), and Karen’s Body Beautiful Super Duper Hydrating Hair Cream (styler and refresher).

What’s your favorite hairstyle? Where do you get hairstyle inspiration?
My favorite hairstyle is a simple wash n go. But… I also love to do French braid headbands to keep my bangs up, buns, and half up hairstyles. I get inspiration from Instagram, YouTube, and Pinterest. Sometimes I will do braid outs or flexi rod sets too!

Who is your curl crush?
It’s Myriam Fares. Gosh, she has the prettiest hair. She’s a Lebanese singer and her hair is super long, curly, and red.
How do you maintain your hair at night?
At night I just wear an oversized satin bonnet and go to sleep. Sometimes I put my hair into two French braids for a different curl pattern in the morning.

How do you maintain healthy length?
I follow the curl girl method; I avoid harsh cleansers and products that will build up on my hair. I also just give my hair lots of TLC. I moisturize every 2-3 days and trim it every 4-5 months. The rest is just being patient.

What's the best thing about being natural?
There’s something very freeing about accepting your natural hair. I feel like I have a lot of inner confidence, regardless of whether my curls are looking amazing or not so great that day, because I love my natural hair either way. I love the unpredictability of my hair and how unique it makes me feel.
Where can folks find you on the web?
You can find me on my different social media portals listed below. Thanks for having me on CurlyNikki!
