Alex Marie- 'Don't Give Up on Your Journey!'

Hey there! I’m Alex Marie and I live in Hampton Roads, VA. This is my second time natural and I’m obsessed with Big Chops!

How long have you been natural?
This is my 2nd time going natural.  The first time was in 2010.  I was natural for 9 months and then relaxed it again (I know, I’m terrible).   I transitioned from a pixie cut and trimmed the ends away slowly. Currently I’ve been natural for 2 years.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?
I big chopped the first time after I graduated high school because my mom was not going to pay for my salon trips anymore, lol. I transitioned the second time but I like the big chop better and my hair grew out a lot faster that way!

How would you describe your hair?
I would say my hair is coily and curly ! It loves natural based products and loves to shrink.

What do you love most about your hair?
The fact that my hair is so versatile makes me happy about my hair being natural. Being stuck with just straight hair gets boring really fast and I love to change my hair. I experiment with color, weaves & different styles.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?  Has it been easy or difficult or both?!
It’s only difficult because it’s so time consuming but I think as it gets longer I can be lazy with styles lol. Right now I’m almost APL (arm pit length).

What were some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles?
I’ll admit I didn’t transition in a good way, lol. I kept wearing it straight until I had enough new growth to do a second big chop. My favorite styles are twist outs, flat twist outs, 2 french braids, braid outs, buns with added hair, and wearing it straight!

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?
I always get really great reactions when I wear my hair big and defined. People are always pleasantly surprised to feel how soft my hair is.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
I shampoo once a week if I used gel, most times twice a month. I deep condition every time my hair gets wet to make sure it’s in good condition. I use the LOC method for moisture (liquid, oil, cream). I only use butter based products to style my hair to keep it soft.

What are some of your favorite natural hair products?
I love Oyin Handmade (everything, lol) , silicon mix deep conditioner, curl junkie’s treatments, natural butters & oils – especially coconut oil! Hello Hydration conditioner by Herbal Essence is also pretty good. I’m looking forward to trying Alikay Naturals & Camille Rose which are available at Target.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?
Don’t give up on your journey! If you get tired just put in a protective style and keep taking care of your hair! Coconut oil is your best friend, it penetrates the hair shaft and is the only oil that moisturizes. And deep condition every time you wash!
