Tell me about yourself!
Well, My name is Kiara aka as Tree aka as @reallyfemale on Social Media ☺ I’m living life as it happens. I’m not dwelling on the past or trying to live too far in the future. I’m currently getting a Master of Public Administration degree and I plan to take over the world. (Evil laugh)
Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper? What was your journey like?
I guess you can say I was a Big Chopper. It started off as a complete dare to cut off all my hair and I did it! I dared the person back of course and she did the same. My journey has been amazing. I even love my hair enough to let her have her way and I gave her a name, Iggy. (before Iggy Azalea was established).
Had you always embraced your texture?
Sort of… I was a bit back and forth. Some days I loved my curls and then some days I wanted it bone straight. I changed my hair with the seasons.
How did family and friends react to your decision to go natural? What was your response to them?
At first everyone hated it, including me. I was overweight at the time so it made me very insecure. I didn’t have anything to hide behind anymore. The common question was “why did you cut your hair”? My response “Its just hair, it will grow back” AND IT DID.
Describe your hair (fine or coarse, thin or thick, highly porous, low, etc.)
Whew!! THICK, THICK, and THICK! Other than that, I would say loose curls in some places, manageable when she wants to be, alive, vivacious!
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to your hair?
Tried to cut a bang. You know one of those Naomi Campbell bangs that stop around the eyelid? Well mine stopped in the middle of my forehead. What was I thinking?
What’s your biggest hair related regret?
Not embracing my natural hair a lot sooner. It will be 3 years in October and I wish that it could 10 years right now. I wish someone had dared me 10 years ago.
What's your current hair routine? How often do you wash, condition, and style? Favorite products! Deets!
My favorite products are Carol’s Daughter and Shea Moisture. I’m completely in love with those brands and my hair responds well to them. I wash my hair once a week now. I use to be very lazy and didn't give her much TLC but now I style my hair at least twice a week.
What’s your favorite hairstyle? Where do you get hairstyle inspiration?
My favorite hairstyle when I have time is a two strand twist-out. When I’m in a rush, it would be a high puff! My hairstyle inspiration really comes from paying attention to my hair and how she responds. When she first began to grow enough to where I could twist it, I tried Bantu knots, braid outs, pin ups, etc. and I stuck with those styles. Soooo can I say that I inspire myself? Is that legal?
How do you maintain your hair at night?
Ha! To be completely honest, I just go to sleep.
How do you maintain healthy length?
I clip my ends about once every two months. Normally when my hair begins to shed a lot that means its time for a trim. I keep my hair moisturized with water. Water in my spray bottle; it is my best friend. Other than that, I let her do all the magic.
What's the best thing about being natural?
The versatility! I feel free! I know that it’s MINE! I grew it and I turn heads ☺
