Jaylin Is Naturally Glam!

Tell me about yourself!
My name is Jaylyn. I was born and raised in northern NJ (Jersey Girls stand up!) I'm currently residing in Pennsylvania.  I’ve been working in the insurance industry for 17 years.  I’m a true Gemini, love to talk and make people laugh.  I’m a YouTube junkie, always watching vids about new products and techniques regarding natural hair.

Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper? What was your journey like?
I transitioned over to natural about 15 years ago.  I’ve always had really frizzy-prone thick hair.  I always wanted that sleek straight look, so I use to have my best friend perm my hair.  Around 21 or 22, I started to have a love for curly hair. I knew my hair was wavy whenever it was wet, so I stopped getting perms and eventually transitioned over.  I don’t remember it being a challenge for me. It didn’t take too long for my hair to fully transition over to natural.

Had you always embraced your texture?
Since going natural, I am in love with my texture. I think the best thing about seeing other naturals is seeing the different textures. Everybody’s curls do not look the same.  Prior to going natural, however, since I had such thick frizzy hair, I always looked for ways to straighten my hair because I wanted that smooth silky look.

How did family and friends react to your decision to go natural? What was your response to them?
My family and friends have been very receptive to it.  My mom tells me she wishes she can get an afro! My friends love it, and when I do straighten my hair, they tell me they prefer my big curly fro.

Describe your hair (fine or coarse, thin or thick, highly porous, low, etc.)
My hair is fine but very dense, so it looks like I have very, very thick hair.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to your hair?
Since going natural, I haven’t done anything to it besides have it trimmed.  I have an urge to get some highlights but I’m scared of the possibility of damage.

What’s your biggest hair related regret?
The craziest thing I have ever done to my hair was chop it all off.  Prior to going natural, I cut all my hair off into what I called the T-Boz haircut with sideburns.  After one week, I regretted it and wanted my hair back.

What's your current hair routine? How often do you wash, condition, and style? Favorite products! Deets!
I wash and deep condition my hair once a week.  I try and deep condition under my Huetiful hair steamer every other week.  I use to be such a product junkie, but now I use Herbal Essence Hello Hydration Shampoo (yes my hair loves sulfates), I use Aussie 3 Minute-Miracle Moist Deep Conditioner, I usually let that sit in my hair for at least an hour w/a plastic cap.  For a leave-in, I use Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, and then Garnier Fructis Style Curl Shaping Spray Gel.

What’s your favorite hairstyle? Where do you get hairstyle inspiration?
My favorite hairstyle is a wash and go. Whether I’m wearing it all out, or I swoop it over to the side to make a curly side ponytail or a high curly bun.  I get hairstyle inspiration from YouTube gurus and magazines.

Who is your curl crush?
I have so many crushes.  I love Taren Guy’s big beautiful fro, Naptural85’s hair is GORGEOUS, Kelis (in her curly stage).

How do you maintain your hair at night?
I pineapple my hair at night and cover it with a satin bonnet.

How do you maintain healthy length?
I try to stay on top of my trims.  Trims are very important in my opinion to maintaining length.  My hair is susceptible to breakage if I wear wash and go’s all the time without giving my hair a break.  So, at least once a month, I get a roller set from a salon and I only get the roots blown out to avoid heat damage.  That style usually lasts for about 2 weeks.  I do that to give my hair a little break from wearing it in a curly state.

What's the best thing about being natural?
The best thing about being natural is feeling like an individual.  I love not looking like everyone else.  I get a compliment on my hair at least once a day from total strangers and I love it.

Where can folks find you on the web?
