I have 3 year old locs that I love to wear in braid-outs. I was standing in line at CVS sporting a pink eye from my latest bout of conjunctivitis. The cashier, a man in his 40s or 50s looked at me and said, "I hope your husband tells you how beautiful your hair is. I love natural beauty." Made my day and even made me forget all about my pink eye for a moment.

I wrote a post in November 2010 when I was transitioning. This is my post as a natural 7 mos. post BC. I have worn wigs from December 2010 until June 2011 and have taken the summer to really practice styling techniques.This meant that most people have not seen my natural hair.I had my hair in twists since July 2 and took them out yesterday. I attended a family reunion cookout and 2 parties and I was TRULY overwhelmed with the postive response my hair got. My husband's best friend and I got into a heated debate about natural hair last year(he did not like it) and even he complimented my hair. Please know that I am not gassing myself....the positive feedback I recieved yesterday helps to let me know that I am heading in the right direction. I felt so empowered and sexy....wish I had done it sooner!!!

This actually just happened to me the other day so I'm glad I have this opportunity to share.

I was stopping by my mom's house (a former natural of about 2 1/2 years who relaxed again but is inspired by me to try and avoid the creamy crack)...I was pulling up just as a little girl of about 4 and her mom were. We got out of the car at the same time and the little girl kept looking back at me. I was looking at her too, loving her natural (type 3) curls that were a gorgeous sandy blonde/brown mix.

As we neared the stairs, the mom and daughter both turned to me and the mom said 'My daughter says there's a lady behind me that has curly hair just like us! She's excited!' and smiles. My heart nearly burst. I told her thank you and said that both her and her daughter have beautiful hair. The little girl smiles at me and says 'Your hair is beautiful too!'

My face almost cracked, I was smiling so hard! Never took a compliment to heart like that before. And to have a CHILD say it with such honesty and admiration...I was amazed. (Note...my hair was in a braid-out puff held with a goody band after being in about 8 big plaits hidden under a scarf for at least 6 straight days and finally being released that morning. And I have pretty 'typical' type 4b hair that takes to braid outs VERY well so to be so openly embraced for what is commonly known as 'bad' or 'nappy' hair by a child was truly a gift for me, if that makes sense) Happy Hair Days ladies!! ;)

Lately I have had people coming up to me on the job asking me how I did my hair, or asking me for tips on how I got it like that from other naturals =). Than I have lil kids telling me they love my hair too!!I really feel honored when I get compliments or asked about my hair since I still feel like a noob to my hair(even though its going to be 2years since I been natural in September)
Not trying to kiss ass here, but I do owe it all to you Nikki, as well as other naturals who inpsire me show other girls that being natural is beautiful!!

I have two...I was sitting having lunch with a white female colleague outside of a cafe, when I looked up, i saw a white guy leaning out the window on the drivers side of his van (he was at the lights) anyway he shouted out the window that he had just driven back around the block as he wanted to tell me how nice he thought my hair was... second compliment was from a little girl that I pass every morning on the street on he way to school. She usually has her natural hair braided. Anyway as she was passing me and I smile at her like I usually do, she tells me you're beautiful.. how cute is that!! it really made my day.

One of my biggest/best compliments happened while on vacation with my 3 nieces, two of which have perms. The youngest one without a perm had her hair pressed straight. They went swimming on day 2 and I had the forethought to braid it beforehand (curly girls with long and thick hair know why). After swimming she rinsed her hair out and let it dry. The next day when I took the braids down she said "I'm glad my hair got wet because now it's pretty like Auntie's". Nothing makes you feel as good as the honesty and adoration of a child.

In Tunisia when i went shopping i got a compliment. I guy who sold me some shoes complimented on how soft my hair was and it was nice. Also another guy there i made freinds with complimented it and said it was soft. :) Also in the Canarias a woman complimented on it, but actually now i think about it many people have complimented on it. Even the days i aint feeling it.

Well, last weekend, some friends I were hanging out, just chillin. When we were getting ready to part ways, one of my guy friends (he's white) put his hand in my hair, and played with some of my curls. It was so random and quick, but made me feel good. That day, I had been running around, doing errands, and it was humid. I thought my hair looked crazy, too crazy to touch. Also, my other guy friends were coming up with nicknames for our friends, one of mine was "chocolate curls". Those guys surprise me a lot with how attentive they are to my hair, by commenting on a new style or playing with my curls. I think some have the hand-in-hair syndrome lol.

This past May, I'd spontaneously decided to wear a fro to the last few weeks of (college) class; I picked it out into the biggest, fiercest thing I possibly could, and when I'd stopped to eat at the cafeteria, another college natural approached me to say, "I've never seen you wear your hair out like that before--it looks so thick and healthy and beautiful, and I just wanted to tell you that."

I went to my alma mater's graduation last month and it was the first time seeing most of my old teachers since my big chop. My former student government advisor loved it! She said it was the cutest style and it made me look so grown up. A week later, during dinner at leadership camp, she saw my hair covered in a bonnet (I'd straightened it for camp just so I wouldn't have the hassle of daily styling and to make it easy to wear my junior counselor hat) and asked why I was covering my hair. I told her I'd straightened it and she was so furious with me for straightening my "beautiful kinky curls." Haha. With the South Florida heat, I was more than happy to let it curl again.

Well I have gotten quite a few. First one was this little old lady at the commisary (military grocery store) she just couldn't stop saying how cute my fresh twist out was and was so glad to see women embrace there natural hair(she was white)"its so lovely" were her words. The next one was some random man at walmat, now only man that really appreciates my natural hair ever since i started is my husband. I really dont expect men to compliment my hair. Any way I passsed him like 3 times in the store older black man first time we did the head nod LOL, the third time he just came out and said I'm digging your style the dress the shoes and man the hair loving it. The last ones are co workers at the school I work at. The counseler she awesome with the kids just have to say it, asked to touch my hair that all year she wanted to but thought she would offend me if she asked. of course I have no problem with that she was surprised that it was springy and then added she loves my hair an all that I do to it and how it seems to be free. She was also surprised which many people are how long it actually is , it shrinks alot. Every day I see her its "oh I just Love your hair" Most of my other coworkes are the same, there mostly white and here in SD Ca. it is rare to see a natural we're few and far between. In the land of weaves, wigs and perms(not knocking them cause some are feirce) We(naturals) stand out, so the few compliments I do get I savor and soak them up and pass them on to any natural I run into.

I did my BC 9 years ago while away in college. Then I didn't know what a BC was, or even what it meant to be natural. I just stood in the dorm bathroom and chopped my hair off. I didn't even tell my family. It was short and thick. I didn't have any particular feelings about it.

At semester end my brother and father came to help me move back home for the break. They took one look at my hair and loved it. My brother said, "don't ever perm your hair again." My dad looked me square in the eyes and said very seriously, "not even for a job. Don't straighten or perm it. This is how it's supposed to be." I just metled. LOL! If these men that I HIGHLY respect can love my hair surely I could. My confidence skyrocketed and their words that cold evening continue to sing in my head.

I think my favorite compliment would be the one that came from my 4 year old nephew. I'm still transitioning but during the beginning months I started experiementing with the different methods of styling my hair, one day while I was on leave from the military I decided to do a straw set (which came out fierce)so I asked my nephew how I looked. My nephew is always complimenting me anyways telling me how prwetty I look when I get dressed so I said do you like aunty's hair today or yesterday when it was straight he said "No I like the curls WWWWAAAYYYY better aunty, they make you look beautiful." (Tear). =)

469 comments!! I think that should be evidence that God really knows what He's doing, ladies. Anyway, I get compliments all the time, without fail. But I would say the compliment I will never forget is when I did this french roll all over my head. Didn't take long. I ran into a friend, Luciano. He's from Argentina so he's really affectionate. He asked to kiss my hair. I usually go with the flow (except now I don't let people touch it as much to prevent hair trouble such as breakage, frizz, etc.) so I said, "Sure."
He kissed it and said, "Wow. It's like getting a hug from Jesus."

i'm a high school student and image is really important to me ( i'm student council president and at my school, that's a huge huge deal.)
anyways the day after my big chop (i'm so impatient i did it on a THURSDAY night!) on friday, in class my dude friend was just staring at me. (and let me tell you, when he got something to say, he just says it and not in a nice way.) he said: natural hair (i had been talking about it and he was like don't come here with a fro blah blah)fits you. and all the other dudes added and were like yea better than your permed hair. To add sugar on top, this dude that i was crushing on said : don't ever put a perm.
i was soooo happy! that was like the happiest day. b/c i was like omgee how are people going to react from about 9 inches of hair to about 3inches!?? lol but yep i got compliments that whole day and still do. i love been natural <3

One of my compliments came from my baby brother, who just happens to be one of the biggest a**holes and most sarcastic people I know, told me one evening as I was doing my hair to go out with friends: "Sis you look beautiful. I really like your hair...you just...yea. You look good."

Another one of my favorite compliments came from a guy I actually met the other night. We danced and as I was walking away he said "I really love your hair...while we were dancing I couldnt stop smelling it." It was great b/c my hair was not cooperating that night!
