Can Somebody Tell Celebrity Baby Mamas that Child Support is for the Child?

Chris Brown, daughter & Nia Guzman
By Brenda Alexander

Children are expensive...this I know. But after recent reports of Chris Brown’s baby mama Nia Guzman gunning for more than $20k monthly in child support, I’m stuck with one question: Are mothers of children who have wealthy fathers taking advantage of child support? Because you can’t tell me that $20k a month is a requirement to provide your child a decent life.

Folks Wanna Call CPS on Dad Pretending to Arrest His Baby

Screenshot of video
By Onicia Muller

There's a one-minute clip of an adult male pretending to arrest a baby. A small fraction of Twitter users replied in-thread that police or Child Protective Services (CPS) should be involved. A larger portion seemed to view the role-play as a joke. As always, I have mixed thoughts about the situation. Mainly, was it wrong and if not, was it wrong to post on the internet?

The Unbelievable Reasons Behind the Astonishing Rate of Black Maternal Death

By Dawn Washington

As I'm watching a news story on the rise of maternal deaths in America, I'm shocked to learn that America leads the world in the number of maternal deaths. But that shock didn't compare to what happened in me when I heard the stats related to maternal deaths among African American women and the reason why.

No Hollywood Snapback for Tia Mowry & We Love Her For It!

Tia Mowry
By Mwabi Kaira

Let’s face it - pregnancy does a number on women’s bodies; the weight gain, the acne, the heartburn, the frequent trips to the bathroom, swollen ankles, you name it and we get it during pregnancy. And then we hold our precious babies in our arms after they are born and we know that it was not all for naught. Some women get their bodies back within weeks but the majority of women do not. Doctors tell us that it takes 9 months to gain the weight and will take the same amount of time to lose the weight but societal pressure has us wanting that instant snapback with a quickness.

4 Things I Learned When I Forgot My Baby in the Car

By Erickka Sy Savané

I was reading an article recently about a South Carolina dad whose 8-month-old baby died after being left in a hot car all day. We hear these stories and wonder how this could happen? Actually, statistics show that it happens to the tune of 36 babies dying each year in the United States. We also wonder, who could do such a thing? Well...I did. Thankfully, my baby didn’t die, and I was able to learn some valuable life lessons as a result.

When Should a Man You're Dating Tell You He's Expecting a Child?

Dominique Perry & Sarunas J. Jackson
By Veronica Wells

This week, “Insecure” fans were surprised to learn that Dominque Perry, the actress who played Tasha the bank teller, gave birth to a child fathered by her castmate Sarunas J. Jackson, (the man who plays Dro.)

There was a shock factor associated with this revelation not only because no one would have put these two together but also because there was more than a little bit of drama surrounding the entire situation. When Dominque first shared the news of her pregnancy, she made it clear that she was under the impression that she’d have to go it alone...

The Common Sense Lesson That Everyone Can Learn From Kloe & Tristan Thompson

Tristan Thompson and Khloe Kardashian
 By Brenda Alexander

By now, you’ve already heard that Khloe Kardashian’s basketball player boyfriend, Tristan Thompson, was caught on video tonguing other women down in clubs throughout the country while his 9-month-pregnant girlfriend was home prepping to give birth to their first child. To escalate matters, Kardashian went into labor a few weeks early, just two days post the news breaking, allegedly due to the stress she was under from being heartbroken and publically humiliated by Thompson’s infidelities. Thankfully, their daughter, True Thompson, was born healthy and all are seemingly doing well. What’s next for Kardashian and Thompson’s relationship has yet to be seen, but the larger unfortunate question has been, “Is this karma for Khloe considering how she and Tristan’s relationship came to be?”

4 Times It's Okay To Ask A Woman If She's Pregnant

 By Erickka Sy Savané

Let’s face it, some questions are just taboo. If you’ve ever asked a woman, “How many months are you?” when she wasn’t even pregnant then you know there aren’t enough rocks to crawl under. It’s right up there with “Is that your grandchild?” when it’s actually the person’s kid.
I’ve been both the asker and the one asked, and it can suck on both ends. Usually, the person asking is just excited and can’t wait to share in the big news, but for the person who isn’t pregnant, well, it’s not so cool. Does any woman want to look pregnant when she is not?

41 and Childless: Why I’m Still Hitting Snooze On My Biological Clock

Via XoNecole.com
By Tee Elle

I scroll through my Facebook news feed admiring the chubby-cheeked faces that my high school classmates post. The happy babies are dressed in toothless grins and two-pieced grownup outfits looking like little men and women. I smile in recognition of the toddlers who are complete miniatures of the people who upload the photos.
“Aww look at her,” I say to myself. “Too cute.”
Then I read the caption. It refers to “my grandbaby.”
Grandchildren? I’m not old enough to be anyone’s Grandma! Am I? But I’m not even a parent yet! Never mind that, I’m 41. And then I start to do the math, which has become an increasingly growing habit these days. I calculate how I could have a high school student right about now. Or a college student. Or (gasp!) a college graduate. Then, yeah, I guess it would be possible to be a grandmother at 41 had I not thrown the proverbial biological clock across the room and postponed motherhood.

How To Deal When The Baby You Got Is Not The Baby You Signed Up For

By Erickka Sy Savané

It’s a few months into motherhood and I’m looking into the eyes of a baby that is nothing like I envisioned. I mean, she’s beautiful, healthy and a human being, like I wanted, but aside from that, I’m wondering if aliens dropped her down from another planet because this bundle of joy ain’t got time for me. I mean, I try to amuse her by making goo-goo faces that would send most babies into a giggling frenzy and this child just stares at me like I'm crazy. My husband and I have gotten so used to this icy gaze that we now call it ‘The Stare Down’ because she tries to use it as a form of intimidation. Seriously, little girl, if I wanted this type of independence and attitude I would have gotten a cat. At least they let you pet them once in a while. At my wit’s end, I call my mom for advice because I seem to recall her telling me that I wasn’t exactly the baby she signed up for either.

The Girlfriend's Guide To A Natural Childbirth

Either you’re all for a natural birth or you think that women who go that route are crazy. Really, why would any woman want to go through that much pain when they don’t have to? Well, I was one such woman. In fact, my epidural was planned way before I was even thinking of getting pregnant. For me, pain has always been the enemy. However, once I did get pregnant and discovered the benefits of birthing naturally, (less chance of interventions that can lead to more interventions, the baby is born more alert, and a faster recovery time), I was hooked, and had two births sans medication. But it was a process, and it couldn't have happened without my girlfriends who held me down. So if you’re thinking of having a natural birth, or you plan to give birth one day, consider this information when you're making your decision.
