There’s no shortage of news about the evolution of women-owned businesses in the past few decades. More women are diving into entrepreneurship and earning a bigger piece of the financial pie that keeps the economy moving. According to the 2018 State of Women-Owned Business Report, commissioned by American Express, the number of women-owned businesses increased by nearly 3,000% since 1972. The report examines trends in women businesses, including black women-owned businesses, based on the 2012 Survey of Business owners and annual gross domestic product estimates.

By Winnie Gaturu

Standard school supplies are often plain and boring. The ones that are a bit more vibrant tend to be way above the normal price list. In addition, most of these supplies do not have themes that resonate with black kids. However, there’s an increase in the number of black-owned companies that target their own communities even in the school supplies sector. Moe Melanin LLC is one of these companies.

Review: I Tried the Mega Popular Teeth Whitener Owned By This Multi-Millionaire Mom

Amber Rose and Ramon Griggie of Express Smile Atlanta
By Erickka Sy Savané

When it comes to teeth whitening, the mother of all teeth whitening, at least as far as instagram is concerned, is Express Smile Atlanta (ESA). Go to their page and celebrities like Amber Rose, Kylie Jenner and even Teyana Taylor and hubby Iman Shumpert are packed like sardines, big-upping the product for making their teeth pearly white. At some point, it starts looking suspicious because we all know that stars be getting PAID to endorse products!

So honesty, while the celeb endorsements did peak my interest, what tipped me over the edge was getting the opportunity to interview the owner of the company, a black housewife from Atlanta named Ramona Griggie who started selling the product out of her kitchen and is now a multi-millionaire. When it comes to housewives-turned-entrepreneurs it don’t get no realer than that! I mean, she might be the original housewife of Atlanta.

So now I’m super curious to find out if this product really works or if it’s just the latest instagimmick? After all, teeth whitening made an estimated 11 billion in 2016 alone, according to statistics. Only one way to find out, I order a kit...

This Family-Owned Ghanaian Label Wants You to Take a Piece of Ghana Wherever You Go

Photo of Essie & Nana Brew-Hammond via Exit 14
By Brook Bobb

A love of clothing runs in Nana Brew-Hammond’s family. Before her grandmother started one of Ghana’s first and only female-run advertising agencies, she was a seamstress, and Nana’s mother, Delphine, grew up helping with measurements, sewing, and cutting fabrics. Nana’s sister, Essie Hammond, was also born in Ghana, but the entire family moved to LeFrak City in Queens, New York, when Nana was young. Delphine traveled back to her home country with the girls many times over the years, always stopping to buy custom-tailored garments made with the finest, most vibrant and colorful Ghanian textiles. “Getting bespoke clothing made is common there,” Nana says. “I was always interested in fashion as a kid, but when I went to Ghana at 12-years-old and had some outfits made for me, it changed the way I looked at clothing.” And so this week, on Ghana’s Independence Day, the self-taught Hammond clan—including Nana, her mother, and her sister—launched their very own line of made-in-Ghana coats and jackets called
Exit 14.

Rich Dennis
By Angela Helm

Essence Communications Inc., the 47-year-old mutliplatform brand that owns Essence magazine and the annual Essence Festival, has gone back to black (ownership), having been acquired by Essence Ventures LLC, an independent African-American-owned company,  Essence Ventures announced in a press release.

The Essence brand was not part of the historic, nearly $3 billion sale of Time Inc. to the Meredith Corp. in November 2017. The brand was looking for another buyer and has apparently found one with Essence Ventures, which was founded and is chaired by Richelieu Dennis, who also is founder of SheaMoisture (in November, Unilever acquired the parent company for SheaMoisture, Sundial Brands).
