BET's 'Killer Curves' Shows the Risks for a Bigger Booty

Blac Chyna, Kloe Kardashian & K. Michelle
By Brenda Alexander
The black woman’s curvaceous booty is nothing new. We all envy that one sis in our family/friend circle for being shaped like a Coca Cola bottle: small waist, nice hips and a plump butt. But what happens when a woman desperately yearns for a shapely figure and the operating table is their top choice? BET’s documentary Killer Curves: Bodies to Die For puts that question to the test by highlighting the dangers associated with surgical enhancements to your backside.

1 REALLY Great Reason to Drink Kombucha Tea!

By Kira Sparkles

After being sick for nearly a week, with no appetite and unable to stomach anything except for a little water, I woke up feeling like an entirely new woman, like I was never sick in the first damn place. I felt radiant and amazing and my mood was sky high! It’s going to sound crazy, but I owe this to a fizzy, fermented tea called Kombucha. It sounds like some white, hippie bullshit but let me wax poetic and make you care for a second.

True Story: I Was Dying Until I Took Out My Breast Implants

By Sabrina Nelson

I was 21 when I got breast implants in 2002. My boyfriend at the time suggested I get them and even offered to pay for them if I lost 10 pounds and I was only 110 pounds at the time. He was 10 years older than me and had implanted an ideal image of what I should look like in my head. This was the Pamela Anderson/ Carmen Electra era when extremely skinny with large breasts were in. I was a 34aa. Yes smaller than an A cup. I was also waitressing in Las Vegas so small breasts were not attractive for the typical cocktail waitress. I went to a popular doctor in town, the only doctor I consulted with, and decided on him to do my procedure. Electing to have surgery was extremely scary and I didn’t realize it until I lying on the operating bed about to go in for surgery. Up until then the excitement overcame the fear.

No Hollywood Snapback for Tia Mowry & We Love Her For It!

Tia Mowry
By Mwabi Kaira

Let’s face it - pregnancy does a number on women’s bodies; the weight gain, the acne, the heartburn, the frequent trips to the bathroom, swollen ankles, you name it and we get it during pregnancy. And then we hold our precious babies in our arms after they are born and we know that it was not all for naught. Some women get their bodies back within weeks but the majority of women do not. Doctors tell us that it takes 9 months to gain the weight and will take the same amount of time to lose the weight but societal pressure has us wanting that instant snapback with a quickness.

Could Removing Butt Implants be the New Jam?

By Mwabi Kaira

I have been blessed in the derrière area and fill my jeans out quite nicely. I feel like it is pretty large as is and can’t imagine trying to make it bigger. Making it smaller would be of more interest to me. Even when I was 35 lbs lighter and in a size 8, I lost much of everything else but this derrière was still right here so it’s not going anywhere. I’ve come to terms with it. When Drake was recently photographed with a woman with a derrière twice the size of mine, I wondered how she could function with it. Also, along with the rest of the internet, we wondered when this butt implant trend would end because some of these jobs don’t look quite right as far as proportions go.

#BlackWomenArePoppin: Watching This Cheerleader Do the Splits is Like Ice Cream on a Hot Day

With so much negativity on social media today anytime a video can inspire some positivity it's time to share! This video stuck out because this young lady is living her life, commanding center stage, not letting anything hold her back. How many times have we told ourselves that we couldn't do something because maybe we didn't fit the stereotype? Though we can't go back in time to become a high school cheerleader we can take that solo trip to Rome, go back to school, or just try a cartwheel for Chrisstakes...Just go for it!!!

Tired of Tampons & Pads? 4 Menstrual Cycle Alternatives Reviewed

By Kira Sparkles

I don't know what it is about college that makes you more open to learning and willing to experiment. At least that's how it felt for me. It was during college that I chopped off my permed hair for an afro, smoked a ton of weed and absorbed every interest I could. It was during this time I discovered feminism. With a feminist bookstore right down the road, I would visit often. It was an awesome little place with local art and authors, tons of books and products that I'd never seen before for 'that' time of the month.

Of course, with all the tampon commercials in magazines and on TV, I never really thought of an alternative to what I could be using. Tampons were easy and everywhere. But commercial tampons use chemicals that can cause vaginal dryness to worse things like cancer, and sometimes even death. I know I experienced that weird, dry feeling with tampons.

With that knowledge, I was open to trying something better, and started a journey of going through menstrual products before landing on an alternative that I liked. They all have their pros and cons, so it depends on your flow and what you feel ultimately works best for you.

Who Says Soap Has to be Boring?

Finchberry soaps
By Kira Sparkles

Today I'm super excited to share my love for a brand called Finchberry! They're a soap company that's based near my neck of the woods in North Florida known not only for being vegan and preservative free, but their products are so cute and colorful! They look like little decadent slices of cake. Everything in this brand is just an absolute feast for the eyes. But how do these products hold up in everyday life? Are they just pretty? Or are they practical too?

I ain’t gon’ lie, not since Power has a show grabbed my attention like Jada Pinkett Smith’s Red Table Talk on Facebook. So what did the Ladies chat about this week?

Why The Suspcicion Around Brandy's Weight Gain Is Symbolic of Our "Body Goals" Obsession

Brandy's interview with True Exclusives
By Brenda Alexander

Brandy has always been thin. Like no curves, straight up and down, pencil thin. So when pictures of a relatively thicker Brandy started surfacing, people speculated she was pregnant. She denied she was with child but the rumors persisted, as if her added pounds couldn’t be voluntary, or something more serious like a medical issue. How rude?!

After so much talk, Brandy finally addressed her weight gain in a recent interview with True Exclusives and put the body shamers and social media thugs to rest. While explaining that after 7 years of going hard in the gym, rigorous tennis and boxing workouts and eating clean, Brandy had enough and wanted a “foodcation.”

Black Women, Here's Why We Gotta Do More Yoga!

Kira getting her yoga on
By Kira Sparkles

While reading this article about Chewing Gum actress Michaela Coel and her yoga practice, it cited that only two percent of Black Americans do yoga. TWO percent! That's a tragic number! Why shouldn't we be out here doing yoga? We're killing everything in the game and this is just another thing that should be on a very long list. Also, we need to challenge this idea of what a yogi looks like.

Yoga was born as a practice in India, but through commercialization and whitewashing, it's become synonymous with upper-class white women in yoga pants chanting Om. I get where that feels daunting and isolating. I know when I go to yoga classes, there are so few people of color in these spaces.

But why is yoga so important to our lives?

Self-Improvement: A Sign of Self-Love or Self-Hate?

Photo of Cardi B via GQ
By Kerika Fields Nalty

We all want to be better versions of ourselves. We want to grow, change, evolve and we definitely should. Listen, a serious juice cleanse never hurt anybody. And a diet does indeed do a body good. But at what point does this pass into obsession? Things like constantly dieting/fasting, spending money you don't have on expensive cosmetics, wigs and/or weaves, obsessing about your looks, beating yourself up over your choices and comparing yourself to others are all red flags that you just might be over-doing the whole self-improvement thing. Be clear about the why’s behind your desire for drastic changes.

Recently, IT girl Cardi B was interviewed in GQ magazine and talked candidly and comically about having botched bootie injections.

Everything You Need to Know About African Black Soap

Photo via Timasamad
By Tima Samad

African Black soap has been used for centuries in West Africa. It is still made the traditional way from locally harvested plantain skins, cocoa pods, palm tree leaves & shea tree bark, to name a few potent ingredients. It is then fermented which is how the soap gets its brownish-black color.
*Please Note* African Black Soap should not be entirely Black in color. If so, it is not authentic. It’s watered down & mixed with different agents!

The Sweeter Side of Hair Removal. I Tried the Sugaring Method.

Sugaring paste
By Jashima Wadehra

Ladies, Ladies, Ladies!

However you prefer to keep your bikini area is your discretion, I prefer to engage in hair removal. Through my late teens my razor and I made do until I realized that it was simply much too much effort and lets be honest…………. The itch is REAL. Between the upkeep, discomfort and general thought of sharp blades on sensitive skin, shaving is a hell naaaah for me.

For the past few years I’ve been an avid waxer, it's quick, on time and does the job (all while reducing my hair growth overall). But recently, I had a dinner date with a friend and she told me about SUGARING. What's that you say?
