By Winnie Gaturu

When entrepreneurs present their businesses and ideas to the sharks on Shark tank, they all wish for one thing, to get a much needed boost. Some end up getting what they wanted or better, while others walk away disappointed. However, there are a select few who turn down offers made to them by the sharks and walk away determined to make it on their own. Kelechi Anyadiegwu is one such individual.

Beloved Fashion Blogger Kyrzayda Succumbs to Cancer But Slays to Her Last Day

Kyrzayda Rodriguez
 By Ta-ning Connai

While watching American Idol one night back in 2009, I heard the most beautiful song; a song full of enough power to put the meaning of life and death in its proper perspective. 'Live Like We're Dying' was about waking up to the reality that life is short, tomorrow may never come and that it is of the utmost urgency to live everyday with unrestricted abandon, as if it were your last. And although I'd heard variations of that same message many times before, none seemed to have such an inspirational impact on me like that lyrical life lesson did. Nine years later, I can't say I have fully and consistently manifested that mantra in my life and I can't say that I've been an eyewitness to anyone else that embodied the entirety of those words either...until lifestyle and fashion blogger, Kyrzayda Rodriguez invited us on her incredible journey of living life while she was dying.

When Keeping it Hood Goes Too Far: Cardi B Vs. Nicki Minaj

Cardi B
 By Brenda Alexander

So Cardi B decided to interrupt the Harper's Bazaar Party during the fashion industry’s premiere celebration of New York Fashion Week for a full-on old school street fight with Nicki Minaj. I knew nothing of this beef, but I digress. What’s more important here is that I’m disappointed that once again, my people cannot handle themselves amongst the Caucasians.

Power Move: Why Tasha St. Patrick Could Use a Big Chop

Naturi Naughton as Tasha St. Patrick
By Kaila Kea

I have a confession…I hate Tasha St. Patrick’s look. I hate the weave. The boots. The make-up. Oy, the make-up. Don’t get me wrong, this has nothing to do with actress Naturi Naughton. As a matter of fact, I really dig Naturi. She seems like someone who would be great to know in real life. Her comeback from her early days in a music trio is arguably one of the best glow-ups we’ve ever seen. Not to mention, she stays away from the drama, enjoying a successful career on the ever-popular Power while keeping her private life…well, private. We can all learn a thing or two from Naturi.

In fact, it is my love for Naturi that makes me hate Tasha’s look even more.

7 Highlights From Beyoncé's Vogue Cover that Even a Non-Fan Could Love

Beyoncé photo by Tyler Mitchell
By Ta-ning Connai

Leave it to Beyoncé to do the unexpected for her historical September Vogue cover and editorial! Sasha Fierce has left the building and we are privy to see a more down to earth version of the 36-year-old superstar.

The Queen B’s concept was to strip away the glam...barely there makeup, without a care hair and a few designer threads. To accompany the raw beauty captured in the pics, taken by 23-year-old Tyler Mitchell, the first African American to shoot a Vogue cover, Beyoncé gives what I find to be one of the most breathtaking interviews of her career. She laid down her superpowers and put her heart on the line by sharing with us some things that we never knew. So, if you’re not a member of The Beehive yet, you may become her biggest fan after hearing what she had to say...

With Beyoncé at the Helm of Vogue's September Issue It May Be the Blackest One Yet

Beyoncé
By Mwabi Kaira

Fashionistas and avid fashion magazine readers look forward to Vogue’s September issue as much as they look forward to Fashion Week and The Met Gala. The Vogue September issue is such a big deal that R.J Cutler made a documentary about it in 2009 and made it a part of pop culture. September is the end of the summer and also the beginning of the school year. Seasons are about to change and Fall fashions and trends are about to be revealed. Publications also track and publish the number of ad pages as a signal of how well they’re doing; a magazine with a lot of advertisements is assumed to be financially thriving. Much thought is given to the September issue. Planning goes as far back as six to eight months and the covergirl is a very critical decision. This year, word is music icon Beyoncé is the covergirl and she’s been given full unprecedented control over the cover and inside feature by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

Every socialite and fashionista looks forward to that one event each year where they can don their finest fashions and be seen. In America, fashion enthusiasts wait for the annual Met Gala, where the most famous faces from the realms of fashion, film, music and art come together to raise money for the Met's Costume Institute and celebrate the grand opening of its latest exhibition. We wait to see pictures of arrivals and become fashion analysts, picking out our favorite looks. In Lusaka, Zambia’s capital city, the event of the year where we do the same is Lusaka July.

From Bullied to Youngest Fashion Week Designer. 11-Year-Old Kheris Rogers is Flexin' in Her Complexion

Kheris Rogers
By Winnie Gaturu

At age 11, Kheris Rogers has already achieved a lot in her life. She is a model, a motivator and a fashion designer. These are many roles for a girl her age but she has handled them with a lot of grace and positivity. You see, Kheris hit a rough patch when she joined first grade. She was one of the few black kids in the school and was constantly bullied by teachers and other students simply because of her dark skin. They would call her mean names and the kids would refuse to play with her. They made her feel different and above all, less human. This made her cry constantly and even prompted her to begin hating her skin tone. On seeing the suffering her sister was going through, Taylor Pollard, Kheris' older sister, decided to do something to brighten up her mood. She dolled up her little sister for a fashion show and posted the photos on twitter with the hashtag #FlexinInHerComplexion. What happened next was more than the two sisters expected. The pictures quickly went viral and received thousands of positive comments. That was the turning point and things started looking all the way up for Kheris.

Dominique Silver. Trans. Model. Jet-Setter.

Dominique Silver
By Erickka Sy Savané

Safe to say, the modeling industry has changed. Gone are the days where one standard of beauty represented the whole, and we can't get enough of diverse beauties like Winnie Harlow, Philomena Kwao, and Adut Akech. So it makes sense that transgender beauties are also having their day. Gone are the days where trans models have to hide out of fear or because no one will book them. One trans model who is carving out a name for herself is Dominican Republic-born, San Diego-bred Dominique Silver who has been in the modeling game long enough to chat about how the industry has evolved and what it's like to be a trans model today.

20 Black Beauty Bloggers to Know!

@brihallofficial
By Ashley Renee

As a woman who has been addicted to YouTube for the past several years, I must give credit to the amazing youtube gurus for teaching me how to do my own box braids, faux locs, search and destroy trim method, a wide array of makeup looks and giving me a ton of vegan and vegetarian meal ideas. Not to mention teaching me how to make some bomb vegan nacho cheese!

While I've always looked to YouTube for hair and makeup styling tips, I must say there are hundreds and thousands of YouTubers out there that have amazing content, we just probably haven't heard of them. With YouTube often offering suggestions to watch beauty bloggers with well over 50K views per video, it's no wonder why so many talented, quirky, and informal beauty bloggers go unnoticed.

After realizing that I was literally watching the same people day in and out, I decided to start searching for less known YouTube beauty gurus and I'm glad I did because I came across some gems (and some ladies who aren't quite so green, but deserve a shoutout too.) If you too have never heard of these ladies, it's time you did! Click through the gallery below to check out 20 of my new favorite black beauty gurus.

Tomiko Fraser Hines photo by Guy Viau
By Brenda Alexander

While most fashion models are slowing their careers down by age 25, Bronx-born Tomiko Fraser Hines was just starting out. After being told constantly that she could have a successful career as a model, the brown-skinned beauty eventually quit her job as a secretary in favor of a more flexible gig as a hostess, and began pursuing supermodeldom. Eventually, she signed with renowned FORD agency and began booking commercial and runway work here and abroad, in addition to features in a plethora of magazines and catalogs, as well as campaigns for the likes of Tommy Hilfiger and Old Navy. Most people know her for being the first African-American model to land a contract with Maybelline Cosmetics- at age 31, no less!

After taking a hiatus to focus on family, wellness and her advocacy work in women’s empowerment, Tomiko is baaaaaack, and candidly talks with us about why at 50 years old (Happy Birthday Mama!) her career is on fiyah!!!

Photography Duo Strike 6-Figure Book Deal to Capture the Beauty of Children of Color

Photo via CreativeSoul Photography
By Erickka Sy Savané

There's something about seeing the fresh face of innocence and joy in little kids that brings out the best in us. For some time, children of color were excluded from images that celebrate our innocence and beauty in media. It's been changing. We've been changing. The hashtag #blackgirlmagic helped. Black Panther helped by showing that no one can capture us like we can.

Enter husband and wife duo, Kahran and Regis Bethencourt of CreativeSoul Photography, who just signed a 6-figure book deal with St. Martin’s Press to capture the beauty of children of color. The book will be titled 'Halo' and is expected to be available online in 2019.  Recently, Kahran told the Atlanta Journal Constitution that they want to change the discussion around our history. "People think our history starts with slavery. What about when we were kings and queens?”

Peep some of the powerful and syrupy sweet photos that will make you understand exactly why these two are getting the BIG BUCKS!

The Face of Now: Winnie Harlow Covers Elle UK!

Winnie Harlow

By Brande Victorian

Remember last week when Winnie Harlow asked, “Do you see me suffering?” after The Evening Standard labeled her a “vitiligo sufferer“? I think it’s fair to ask that question again after seeing the model on the cover of Elle UK’s May issue. The beauty is the definition of living life in color as she stuns in Gucci and complementary pastel-colored makeup as the mag’s cover model.
