Tell It Tuesday: To the People in Church Who Don't Want to 'Hug Thy Neighbor'

By Ta-Ning Connai

I LOVE TO LAUGH! Just sitting here thinking about it makes me feel like belting out a huge Ahahahaha! And nothing brings me more chuckles than a Facebook page called Church of Laugh, where nothing churchy is off limits. From feathery hats large enough to be a lethal weapon to choir leaders that should be officially banned from the mic forever, get ready for some gotta-catch-your-breath hilariousness! I find their mix of humor and the Christian experience quite the clever combo; ‘cause I just don’t see why everything about loving Jesus gotta be so sad like those old gospel hymns (sorry but, no I don't wanna go up yonder, yes I can DEFINITELY wait to get to Heaven, yes His grace is amazing, but do not call me a wretch, thanks). And while they usually have me in stitches, one recent post pointed to something that happens to me, and lots of other people in church, way too often.

The Bobby Brown Story Pt 1 Was Epic & Twitter Had Us on the Floor

Bobby Brown
By Brenda Alexander

From the moment the promo for The Bobby Brown Story dropped that opened with the original Bad Boy of R&B snorting a line of cocaine (seriously BET, y’all couldn’t think of anything else) and featured his classic pelvic thrusting performances, I knew we would get his raw unfiltered truth. We’ve anticipated a biopic for years. He hasn’t had the best reputation with unfairly catching the slack for the dismantling of New Edition, and the deaths of Whitney Houston and Bobbi Kristina. But he’s stayed strong, cleaned himself up after years of addiction, and has reinvented himself as an artist, family and businessman.

Nevertheless, the first of a two-part TV movie didn’t disappoint. I scanned twitter for reactions; and, of course twitter’s commentary surpassed any recap. Here are the top moments that had Twitter losing it:

Folks Wanna Call CPS on Dad Pretending to Arrest His Baby

Screenshot of video
By Onicia Muller

There's a one-minute clip of an adult male pretending to arrest a baby. A small fraction of Twitter users replied in-thread that police or Child Protective Services (CPS) should be involved. A larger portion seemed to view the role-play as a joke. As always, I have mixed thoughts about the situation. Mainly, was it wrong and if not, was it wrong to post on the internet?

True Story: I Removed My Weave in Front of My White Classmates

By Onicia Muller

In celebration of completing our freshman year, we’d decided to gather at a cohort’s apartment to watch one of the final World Cup matches.

The weeks leading up to that fateful day were epic. I’d figured out how to save costs on books so I could splurge during Spring Break. Florida was magical: we got T-shirts with custom airbrushing, ate some delicious BBQ, and had an authentic African American salon experience. My stylist argued with her baby daddy on the phone while doing my hair. Amazing! My leave out blended seamlessly with the highlighted wefts. Those feathered layers, ooh child, I was living!

Are Men Intimidated By Funny Women? Tiffany Haddish Thinks So.

Tiffany Haddish & John Legend
By Veronica Wells

The other day I fell into a Youtube rabbit hole and discovered an interview between Tiffany Haddish and John Legend. The two talked about all sorts of interesting things but one thing Haddish said stuck with me. John asked her: “Do you find guys like women that make them laugh? I have a wife that makes me laugh all the time.”

Tiffany: “I think guys that are confident in themselves, love women who make them laugh. I think guys that are very insecure—which is what I seem to attract— they don’t like it so much. They be cool the first few dates, then they’ll be like, ‘Oh wait, she can control this whole room.’”

6 Yellow Flags That Make Me Automatically Not Trust You

By Kira Sparkles

We judge each other constantly. You do, I definitely do. From where to eat and who our friends are, judgment is with us every step of the way. We need our judgment. It’s gotten us this far as a species.

When it comes to judging others, there are little things in place that make our brains put up red flags to keep us safe. For example, people who are rude to service people get red flags. Other than glaringly obvious behaviors, I want to talk about the smaller yellow flags.
