Since 2009, our hearts have been captured by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle. They’ve inspired us to care, do, and become more so we could have a positive impact on the world.

When they left the White House, it felt like our favorites were leaving us behind. Books have been written on their legacies, films have tried their best to show us how it all got started, and artists have grasped their intrinsic magnificence through masterpieces.

Now, the Obamas are partnering with Netflix to create content that uplifts and moves the world as they have over the past eight years.

Before Cardi B, Nikki Minaj, Remy Ma, Lil Kim, Eve, Foxy Brown, Queen Latifah, Salt & Pepper and every female rapper you can think of, there was Roxanne Shanté. 14-year-old Lolita Shanté Gooden released her debut single Roxanne Speaks Out in 1984 and became rap’s first female star. She released Roxanne Roxanne and The Real Roxanne and both albums hit the Billboard chart. The Queensbridge native had a gift for freestyling and her battles became epic both in the street and on wax; the Roxanne Wars were a yearlong saga that followed Roxanne and her rivals. I’m just asking.

I didn’t see the trailer for Step Sisters, a Netflix original film starring Megalyn Echikunwoke and Naturi Naughton when it hit the internet weeks ago but I heard the uproar. Black folks said no, nope, nah son, not today, and stop the madness to the storyline of a Black sorority president teaching a white sorority to step in order to save their chapter. The message was clear; leave our stuff alone and stop appropriating all we hold so dear.

8 Reasons She’s Gotta Have It is Binge Worthy

The Cast of 'She's Gotta Have It'
By Mwabi Kaira

I was 10 years old when Spike Lee’s movie She’s Gotta Have It was released. I obviously didn’t see it.  When it was announced that Spike was recreating the movie as a Netflix TV series, I was excited to have something of melanin to watch.  After hearing the cast on the Breakfast Club early last week, I decided to watch the movie to refresh my memory because I seriously couldn’t remember if I’d seen it.  I got acquainted with Nola Darling and instantly fell in love and wondered what the reviews were back in 1986 because Nola was not one to be played with!  I began my binge Thursday (just one episode before I headed out for Thanksgiving festivities), paced myself to episode 5 on Friday and finished episode 10 Saturday.  I was not disappointed and haven’t stopped talking about it since.  Spike did an amazing job of bringing 2017 to the series.  If you haven’t binged the series yet, here are 8 reasons why you should:
