Tell It Tuesday: Why Critics of BlacKKKlansman Need to Chill

Spike Lee has done it again! He’s made a movie that has pissed some people off. The man who garnered iconic status for his thought-provoking, in your face, knock you upside your head black conscious projects back in the early 80s to late 90s has not deviated from his brand of cinematic flavor, all of which has always made him a source of irritation for the Hollywood film industry.

Well, now Lee is back with his film BlacKKKlansman (produced by Jordan Peele), but this time around, it’s quite a few black folk that are irritated and extremely bothered by what they feel is a way too gentle approach to his signature storytelling. From Do The Right Thing, to Malcolm X to School Daze and more, you could always expect to leave “A Spike Lee Joint” fired up and ready to justifiably slap a white jerk in the face, but instead be inspired to “fight the powers that be” without lifting one little finger. BlackKKKlansman didn't do that for a good amount of black critics, including some really disappointed black fans. Yet, white film critics, and both the Sundance and Cannes film festivals are all giving it a thumbs up. What's that about?

Folks Wanna Call CPS on Dad Pretending to Arrest His Baby

Screenshot of video
By Onicia Muller

There's a one-minute clip of an adult male pretending to arrest a baby. A small fraction of Twitter users replied in-thread that police or Child Protective Services (CPS) should be involved. A larger portion seemed to view the role-play as a joke. As always, I have mixed thoughts about the situation. Mainly, was it wrong and if not, was it wrong to post on the internet?

Meet the Police Officer Who Blew Up on Instagram Doing Good in His Community

Officer Norman and kids in his Little Rock community
By Ta-ning Connai

Officer Thomas Norman is clearly cut from a different cloth. Through his strategy for community policing (a mix of relatability, love, compassion and respect), he is changing the way many of us see law enforcement. He was doing good deeds behind the scenes in his hometown of Arkansas when rapper and community activist Killer Mike took notice. Mike took him on CNN as a prime example of what police can do to assist and engage (not taunt and terrorize) people of color. But it was west coast rapper, The Game and his son Harlem, who brought Tommy to rock star status in 2016. On the heels of the murders of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, The Game found it important to let people know that there was an officer out there making a tremendous effort to restore hope and mend the wounds that bad cops have caused. So he and his son created a GoFundMe page for people to support Norman’s outreach. From Hollywood celebrities to everyday folks, the blessings are STILL pouring in! Officer Norman’s IG page- which has over 1 million followers- has a fabulous reality show vibe; it's heartwarming, hilarious and keeps you coming back. Even the neighborhood regulars have a bunch of fans following their every move. But hey, don't take my word for it, just see it for yourself and I'm sure these Best Officer Norman Moments will make your heart just melt!

Neighbor Calls Police on a 12-year-old Boy for Mowing the Wrong Lawn & Now His Business is on Fiyah!

Reggie Fields of 'Mr Reggie's Lawn Cutting Service'
By Erickka Sy Savané

Another day, another person calling the police on someone black for no good reason. There was 'BBQ Becky' who called the police on some black folks who were chefing it up with a grill in the park. 'Permit Patty' who got her fingers in a tizzy and called the police on an 8-year-old who was selling water on the sidewalk, and now there's the 'Lawnmower Lunatic' who called the police on 12-year-old entrepreneur, Reggie Fields of Cleveland, who was cutting grass and accidentally cut a piece of their lawn. Now, let me be fair by saying that there's been no footage confirming the color of the neighbors, but usually when there's no mention of color, the perpetrators are white. I'll take the heat if later we see that the Lawnmower Lunatic was actually a cranky old man of color with 10 cats. That said, things have turned out pretty well for Reggie...

It was an entirely routine moment: Four people exited the home they had rented on Airbnb in Rialto, Calif., and loaded suitcases into their car.

Within minutes, several police cars had arrived and the group was being questioned as a helicopter flew overhead. A neighbor who didn’t recognize them had reported a possible burglary, the police said.

They were in fact four creative professionals in town for an event. Now the three black people in the group are suing the Rialto Police Department, saying they were unfairly treated during the April 30 encounter.

Actress Reagan Preston-Gomez's Mom Sued The Detroit Police Department For Sexual Harassment And Won

Actress Reagan Preston-Gomez and her mom Cheryl Gomez

By Mwabi Kaira
Listening to Queen Sugar actress Reagan Preston-Gomez’s podcast Reaganomics last week, featuring her mother Cheryl Gomez, I could not believe that her sexual harassment story that happened back in 1982 sounded exactly like the many sexual harassment accounts by women today.  Thirty five years have gone by, and here we are still experiencing the abuse of power by men who believe that taking advantage of women sexually is part of their job description and women should simply accept it as the way it is.
