How to Create 4 Quick and Easy Protective Styles for Winter

During the winter, the harsh weather changes can be damaging to your hair. Think about it: you go from inside a warm house, usually circulating dry air, into a cold, windy, and frigid environment. Not only is the temperature change hard for you, but your follicles can pay a price too. If you’re struggling for simple remedies to the cold, here are four protective styles that can keep your hair safe from the freezing winds.

This classic style of braids covers your hair in three strands of protection. You can wear them for up to 6 weeks and not have to worry about your hair being shocked by the cold. Be sure to provide your scalp with the oil it needs and also give your braids an occasional shampoo. Your local Yelp can help you find a braider to help you create this look.

How to Wash Protective Braid Styles This Summer

Discovering Natural
Hi Naturals,

With the weather being so hot and people taking vacations and needing their hair to not turn from a defined twistout to an Afro in the humid weather, doing styles like crochet twists and braids is an excellent alternative! However, many people feel like they cannot wash their hair while in these styles. I feel that it is crucial to do so. “Out of a healthy scalp, comes healthy hair”... right?

Here's a video I did showing how I wash my crochet braids after returning from a week-long cruise filled with swimming in chlorine and salt water. Hope it's helpful! -Discovering Natural

Big Hair No Care: The "Poor Woman's" Natural Hair Extension Line

Freddie Harrel
By Siraad Dirshe
We all know that protective styles are a great option for natural hair. The beauty lies in being able to leave hair untouched for weeks on end, and the endless amounts of time (and brainpower) saved from not having to 'do' your hair each day. And while you can't put a price on time, there's no denying how expensive weaves and wigs can be. It's not uncommon for human hair pieces to run several hundred dollars. Blogger Freddie Harrel wants to change this with her natural hair extension brand Big Hair No Care.

I Started Using Wigs to Protect My Natural Hair From Winter Weather & Now I’m HOOKED

By Elle D. for BGLH

I’ll be totally honest — I’m not sure I’ve ever really understood the hype about wigs. I had a few when my hair was a teeny weeny afro just to appease myself when I got bored with the same style everyday, but once my natural hair grew out, I gave them all away. Also, I can’t cornrow to save my life, so I didn’t think they were a feasible option for me. But when the temperatures in my area dropped to the single digits, there was no way I was going to restyle my wash and go and sit around all day with wet hair (I don’t like blowdrying my wash and gos with a diffuser or under a dryer because it takes so long). Buns and braids were working for awhile, but I got tired of them and needed another option. I researched wig installs on YouTube that didn’t require cornrowing and got to work.
