True Story: I Became a "Trailing Spouse" and Hated It

By Nissa Francisco

Over seven years ago I left Canada to live in London where my husband was pursuing a work opportunity in his career. The idea of moving to a different country to be with him was something I didn’t think twice about at the time. There was nothing more thrilling to me than having the opportunity to support his career endeavors while giving me the opportunity to start fresh somewhere I had never been before. I had just fought my way to finishing a Masters degree I wasn’t even sure I wanted, while working a full-time job that was not fulfilling or progressive in the ways that I had hoped it would be. I was really beginning to question my purpose and my life condition was at an all time low. London seemed like just the shake up I needed. I would take the opportunity to pursue interests that I would never dare pursue in Canada while taking advantage of a new culture and way of life. I worked in fashion retail, took acting classes and completed a course in fashion buying and merchandising. I ended up working for a really great start-up clothing company and could see myself growing with their brand…but I still wasn’t happy.

Amber Rose and Ramon Griggie of Express Smile Atlanta
By Erickka Sy Savané

When it comes to teeth whitening, the mother of all teeth whitening, at least as far as instagram is concerned, is Express Smile Atlanta (ESA). Go to their page and celebrities like Amber Rose, Kylie Jenner and even Teyana Taylor and hubby Iman Shumpert are packed like sardines, big-upping the product for making their teeth pearly white. At some point, it starts looking suspicious because we all know that stars be getting PAID to endorse products!

So honesty, while the celeb endorsements did peak my interest, what tipped me over the edge was getting the opportunity to interview the owner of the company, a black housewife from Atlanta named Ramona Griggie who started selling the product out of her kitchen and is now a multi-millionaire. When it comes to housewives-turned-entrepreneurs it don’t get no realer than that! I mean, she might be the original housewife of Atlanta.

So now I’m super curious to find out if this product really works or if it’s just the latest instagimmick? After all, teeth whitening made an estimated 11 billion in 2016 alone, according to statistics. Only one way to find out, I order a kit...

Self-Improvement: A Sign of Self-Love or Self-Hate?

Photo of Cardi B via GQ
By Kerika Fields Nalty

We all want to be better versions of ourselves. We want to grow, change, evolve and we definitely should. Listen, a serious juice cleanse never hurt anybody. And a diet does indeed do a body good. But at what point does this pass into obsession? Things like constantly dieting/fasting, spending money you don't have on expensive cosmetics, wigs and/or weaves, obsessing about your looks, beating yourself up over your choices and comparing yourself to others are all red flags that you just might be over-doing the whole self-improvement thing. Be clear about the why’s behind your desire for drastic changes.

Recently, IT girl Cardi B was interviewed in GQ magazine and talked candidly and comically about having botched bootie injections.
