Chloe' Is Naturally GLAM!

Tell me about yourself!
I am a Detroit native who loves all things hair and beauty related. Three years ago I was sick of frying and dying my hair. Excessive heat and color damage led me to take the big chop plunge. A couple of months post big chop I turned on my camera and decided to share my successes and fails with whoever felt like watching! I hope that my appreciation for natural hair and beauty transcends outward appearance and really inspires other women to do what is right for them in all aspects of life.

Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper? What was your journey like?
I was a big chopper all the way. Go big or go home! One morning I woke up and after looking at my stringy heat/color damaged hair, I took scissors to root and went for it! Despite a couple of set backs, my journey so far has been great! I enjoy experimenting with different styles and products. But I have to admit, I miss my twa. It was SO easy.

Miranda Is Naturally Glam!

My name is Miranda Jaleisa and this is my transition story!

Were you a long term or short term transitioner, and why?
I transitioned for a total of a year and 2 months before I went ahead and big chopped. I have had long hair for as long as I could remember so the idea of me having short hair was not even possible. I have always been someone who was so concerned about length and just recently came to realize that length means nothing if your hair is unhealthy, so I just went for it!

Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper? What was your journey like?
I transitioned without even knowing it.  I wore weaves forever, and had my last relaxer in 2006. But I wasn't taking proper care of my hair, so while I wore weaves all the time I never deep conditioned. I washed my hair only when I removed my weave which was once every month. Sometimes every 2 months.

Dorcas Is Naturally Glam!

Tell me about yourself!
My name is Dorcas. I am proudly Nigerian-Canadian. Born in London, England and living in Toronto, Canada. I am a creator, writer and strive to educate and empower.  I’m also currently wearing mismatched socks.

Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper? What was your journey like?
I’m both! My first go at the natural hair thing I transitioned for about 22 months. At different points I took a few inches off but I refused to part with my length.

I did a second big chop (which maybe isn’t the right word… I got a big haircut) in November 2013 after being fully natural for about 10 months.

Jewell Bell Is Naturally Glamorous!

Were you a slow transitioner or a Big Chopper & why?
I transitioned as well as big chopped. I decided to go natural back in July 2010 after discovering your site, CurlyNikki.com, as well as one of my biggest hair idols Corinne Bailey Rae who reemerged on the scene with massive and luxurious hair. All my life, my hair was a huge part of my identity and often dictated my self-esteem. Fortunately, my mother never relaxed my hair but years of flat irons and blow dryers completely destroyed my natural hair texture, similar to a chemical relaxer. I became tired of trying to conform to society’s biased standard of beauty. That’s when I made the decision to deviate from the homogeneous fray and go natural.  I transitioned a little over a year before officially big chopping on December 10, 2011. It was the scariest but bravest and most rewarding decision I’ve ever made.

Kanisha Is Naturally Glam!

Tell me about yourself!
Hey! My name is Kanisha Pitchford. I'm 22 years old, and I am an Educational Psychology major at Mississippi State University.

Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper? What was your journey like?
I transitioned for 1 year and 5 months. My transition was not hard at all because I used a lot of protective styles such as twists and sew ins to help the process go by smoothly. When I was not protective styling, I mostly did braid outs and bantu knots, or if I was feeling lazy I would just put my hair in a bun. My initial goal was to transition for at least 2 years, but I was over the dead ends and felt I was ready, so I went for it and I'm absolutely loving it so far!

Wanda Is Naturally Glam!

What was your journey like?
I big chopped. I would big chop every year but would never commit to being natural.  The 3 years ago I decided to stick with it.  It was a little difficult until I found YouTube and that was my saving grace.

Had you always embraced your texture?
Yes, I never had a problem with my texture. I just didn't know how to style it once my hair grew out, so I always rocked a Caesar or very low curls.

Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper? What was your journey like?
I've always been natural. I only flat ironed my hair almost EVERY day! (Yikes) I just never decided to embrace my curls until about 2 years ago.

Had you always embraced your texture?
No, my texture is really curly, so being in school I got called names like Jerry curl, or Michael Jackson.

Lynette Is Naturally Glam!

Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper? What was your journey like?
I was a transitioner. I became natural 5 years ago, but I wasn’t fully natural until 1 year ago. I used to wear weaves and perm my edges and leave outs. This absolutely broke my hair and now I have some areas that are shorter than the others.

Had you always embraced your texture?
No. To be honest it wasn’t until recently that I embraced my texture. I used to wish for looser curls. I would see all the YouTube tutorials of girls with edges that were “laid” and wondered why mine were not doing the same. I came to realize that my hair may not have sleek edges, but it is very tough and resistant…and that toughness is beautiful.

Maronda Is Naturally Glam!

Tell me about yourself!
I am a mother of three wonderful children, two boys and one girl.  I am a middle school counselor in the Las Vegas area. I have been natural for over 15 years. I am a Cali girl, so I wore  my hair pressed. I never knew my curl pattern or cared. I had long healthy hair,  but after my third child, my hair started to thin and break. For the last five years, I wore sew in weaves for the fullness. December 2014, I decided to "fast" from my weaves and wear my hair natural. I was tired of the weaves and wanted to see my real hair for once.

Sophia Is Naturally Glam!

What was your journey like?
I had a perm in my hair once or twice. I had horrible experience with a hair stylist in Burlington, NJ. She left the relaxer in my hair and it left burnt marks on my scalp. I never really needed them because my hair would not take. Growing up, my father used to do my hair. Once my parents got divorced, things change. My mother can only french braid my hair, so my older sister did my hair until she left for college.  Me and my sister are 5 years apart. Back then in the 80’s their were no products for mixed chicks, but come to find out white girl products have always worked in my hair.
