5 Easy, Practical Ways to Combat Natural Hair Shrinkage

If you’ve been natural long enough—you know that shrinkage can be cray! It can rob of you hard earned inches!  Personally, my hair shrinks up at least six inches (probably more… I don’t have a tape measurer otherwise I probably would check). Some people hate shrinkage, while others don’t mind it at all. When I first went natural I hated it... a lot. Especially because I wanted my hair to look longgg–not be like an afro! Not that anything is wrong with afros at all—just wasn’t my personal preference.  Plus, back then being natural wasn’t really accepted. So I just got made fun of and got called Macy Gray and what not all the time *sighs*. But some people love their shrinkage! They love the versatility of it and never fight it. So if you are in that category, then this post isn’t for you (but share it with a friend or something)!

So there are a few ways I stretch my hair to get rid of some of the shrinkage. If I didn’t do these things, my hair would probably look a lot shorter and poofier.

Shrinkage can be frustrating when you pull a curl down just to see it snap back up. Shrinkage can hide the true length of your hair. Some curlies experience more shrinkage than others. The curly girl magic trick can be frustrating for some and can take time to fully accept and embrace. Previously, I was frustrated with my shrinkage and did not know how to fully accept it. I would try to use hair products that would aid in reducing shrinkage while sitting in front of my mirror and waiting for results. My 4-year hair anniversary is approaching soon, and while reflecting on my journey I finally came to terms with my love-hate relationship with shrinkage.

“Shrinkage” has become a four-letter word within the natural hair community and, quite frankly, I fail to understand what the huge fuss is about. Phrases like “shrinkage is the devil” or “I hate shrinkage” show up in photo captions on social media daily, usually in hashtag form.

5 Ways to Decrease Shrinkage- Natural Hair



It happens often, you spend time styling your wet hair for it to eventually shrink up to a shorter length. You may feel frustrated because you want to show off the length that you worked hard for. Shrinkage is normal for curlies, especially those with Type 3 and 4 curls. These tips can reduce shrinkage with hair.

Stretched Hair Styles

Hair styles such as twist outs, braid outs, Bantu knots, and roller sets allow the hair to be stretched. While styling, apply a small amount of hair butter, such as Shea Butter, to hair. The butter will add more weight to the hair by allowing it to hang more. At night, maintain twist outs and braid outs by re-twisting or re-braiding. This will achieve elongated hair.

The Pineapple

The Pineapple Method is an easy way to reduce shrinkage. To achieve the Pineapple, simply put your hair in a high ponytail using a loose hair tie. For better results, use a satin hair scarf. This method protects your curls at night from being smashed. It’s also a great way to achieve second day hair for wash and go’s, twist outs, and braid outs. The Pineapple stretches the roots of the hair and shows length.

5 Ways to Minimize Shrinkage of Your Natural Hair

Hey y'all. I came across this article on shrinkage, a problem that I, along with many other curlies, face with their natural hair. I love big hair, so it's really frustrating when my mane shrivels up like a prune and does nothing for my visual aesthetic. I ranted about it in this post, and decided to research the topic further. Anyway, here are the main tips the author gives to avoid or prevent the shrinkage of your natural hair:

1. Twist or braid the hair in sections when it is wet – This is the most common technique for reducing shrinkage. The braids or twists are undone once completely dry imparting a beautiful texture on the hair or leaving it relatively ‘stretched’ out and ready for the next step of the styling process.

2. Hair treatments – There are various treatments that you can give your curls to leave them elongated when dry. The most popular of these are the dairy based ones like yogurt treatments, sour cream treatment or plain milk treatment. The common denominator in these 3 is the lactic acid that seems to stretch out the hair and some have reported up to 40% less shrinkage after using the treatments. Like anything else, this is a process of trial and error. Some people’s hair seems to respond to different treatments better than others. The fact that these are only temporary effects (lasting until the next wash), is also appealing to most as there is no damage to the hair. The caramel treatment is also worth a mention. It involves the use of molasses, honey, bananas and some vinegar blended together to a caramel consistency. This is an excellent moisturizing treatment and it also leaves the curls hanging lower even after the hair is dry.
