How to Get Professional Finger Coils at Home

Finger coils are a great styling option for naturals of many lengths. In all the eight years I’ve been natural, I thought I could only rock coils at a shorter length, but that is so far from the truth! I had a chance to experience this for myself with the help of Houston stylist Candace Walls of Sovereign Styles Hair Studio. Using products from the Design Essentials Natural line, she took my hair from curls to coils in no time flat!

Products I Used:

I’m a pretty quick learner and I really think this is a style I can do at home myself. However, never having thought I could accomplish this type of style was really the only thing holding me back.

Painful Afro Puffs? 6 Tips to Lessen the Pain on Your Head

by Toia B of LuvToBNatural.com

Ok… let’s talk headbands, puffs and such.

Have you seen this meme floating around on the socials?

Ladies, while that meme is hilarious (and truthful!), we’ve got to stop this! Yes, we women love to joke about the cost of beauty and the things we put ourselves through to look good, but headbands don’t come with a bottle of aspirin, nor should they. Believe it or not, you CAN achieve a cute puff without having to rock back and forth repeating “beauty is pain… beauty is pain…!” for some solace. This is a dangerous but definitely avoidable situation.

Palm Rolling vs Interlocking: How Do You Maintain Locs?

by Sherrell Dorsey of Organic Beauty Vixen

Last night, while working into the wee hours of the night on articles for other publications that I write for, I got distracted by a few tutorials on how to maintain dread locks. This November I will be four years strong as a locked goddess but let me tell you that even with a few years under my belt, I’m still learning how to properly care for my hair.

I started my journey with human hair kinky twists, allowed the new growth to come in and gently palmed rolled the roots while snipping off the extended hair. While my hair is now shoulder length and somewhat healthy I do have the occasional breakage and thinning. After a trip to Good Hair Salon back in June, my stylist Zue showed me how to “interlock” my new growth to keep my locks strong. I was intrigued and eventually started to use this method for regular maintenance in addition to palm rolling.

I Love Goddess Braids. Here's How I Install Them.

by Christian Byshe' of www.chicandcoily.com

So I was looking for a new simple yet fun hairstyle to wear for a couple days and after searching Instagram and Pinterest I ran across Goddess Braids.

Now there are so many different ways to rock the style in general and it pretty much seems that everyone has placed their own unique spin on it. Some people do flat twists while others do french braids. It just all depends on what the wearer prefers.

I chose to do 2 french braids with a slanted part.

For this style I used…
  • Eco styler olive oil gel
  • denman brush
  • rat tail comb
  • hair clamps
  • 3 bags of kanekalon braiding hair
  • moisturizer of my choice

How I Install My Own Faux Locs for a Protective Style

Tina Munzu writes:

"I LOVE the faux locs look and always wanted to get some for myself. However, I could not justify the money I would have to pay to get them installed. After watching several Youtube tutorials I felt encouraged to try it out myself. Traditionally, you would twist your natural hair with some synthetic kanekalon hair and then wrap more kanekalon/marley hair around the twists for that loc effect. Seems pretty straight forward right? Only thing is I cannot havana twist! So I tried a different technique and I must say I was quite impressed with the results. No need to twist beforehand. Simply start wrapping tightly to get the same look. This means using less hair (cost effective), less installation time and reduced bulk to carry on your head. I just added a new protective style to my repertoire and cannot wait to perfect my technique. Check out the tutorial to get started on beautiful locs."

Transitioning to Natural Hair: Styles That Blend Your New Growth

by Jonna of BlackNaps.org

While transitioning from relaxed hair to wearing your natural hair, it can be difficult finding styles that blend your straight hair with the newly growing textured hair. The tighter your curl pattern, the more obvious the point of demarcation (the point where your straight hair ends and your textured hair begins). When I was transitioning, it got to a point where it just looked like I wasn’t doing my hair at all, which wasn’t a good look.

There are some styles that give transitioning hair a blended look, and here are a few that are quick and easy to do. These style will help you look cute as you transition.

Recreate This Look: Big, Bold Natural Hair

Clarissa Todd writes:

This picture went viral but little did everyone know, it was a WIG I created. Alot of naturals want to try color but their hair may or may not be in the best condition to handle color or they may not want the full commitment to a particular color. I would suggest to try the color of choice by creating a wig! Now-a-days weave comes in every texture and color, even ombre so have fun with it and create!

How to Feel Confident with Short Natural Hair

by Jonna via BlackNaps.org

Whether it's the result of big chopping to start your natural hair journey, for the convenience of care-free hair styling, or simply a part of your signature look, short hair has always been on trend for women. Personally, I’m fan of big, long hair on myself, but a huge fan of short hair on other ladies. While many ladies are concerned about losing their femininity if their hair is too short, there are lots of ladies in the place with style and grace, rocking short tapered cuts down to bald fades.

If you’re looking for some tips for feeling feminine and confident with short hair, here are some ladies to share with you their tips on how to join Team #ShortHairDontCare:

My hair journey has come such a long way from the beginning. After realizing my hair suffered greatly from heat damage and relaxers, I decided to stop getting relaxers in 2008. My hair was thin, short, and had split ends and I knew I had to make a change. After making the huge decision, I didn't know how to style or even deal with my natural hair because I always kept it straightend but I knew that this was was a journey I was willing to take. Over the years I watched so many videos, educated myself on my hair, tried different products, and many trial and errors styles to get to where I am today. Over all my hair is no longer my enemy and it's in the most healthiest state ever!

This quick and easy twist-out is my go-to style for my natural hair. It's simple to achieve and lasts for about 4 days! I have provided the steps below.

How to Straighten Natural Hair Safely

Stiel Aubrey writes:

Hello beautiful people! Learning how to protect and love my hair has been a struggle growing up, but now as a 24 year old woman I am so in love with my natural hair! I have figured out the best way to take care and nourish my hair, and it started growing like crazy. My hair has never been healthier and I can switch to straight styles and not worry about my hair getting further damaged. I straighten my curls about 5 times a year and this is how I do it. We as natural women are blessed to be able to change up our look so drastically, so have fun with your hair and learn to love what has been given to you! Enjoy!

I'm writing to share my natural hair wash and go tutorial.  I believe the CN fam will find it useful because I show how I create the illusion of tapered hair in the back. This prevents my wash n go from looking like a mullet since I'm in the weird middle phase of growing my hair out and my hair is even all around.  Enjoy!

Pros and Cons of Afro Puffy Twists...Would I Do it Again?

by Shelli of Hairscapades
I was originally going to call this post, “Afro Puffy Twists or How My Dream Turned into a Nightmare.” However, time has allowed wounds to heal and a level-head to prevail.
