8 Sulfate-Free Shampoos That Won't Strip Your Natural Hair

by Sabrina Perkins of SeriouslyNatural.org

Naturals have a love-hate relationship with shampoo. We love that they cleanse our tresses but often they are just too harsh for our hair. Sulfates are the detergents in shampoo that cleanse away the dirt, pollutants and product build-up but they also strip away the natural oils we need to keep our hair moisturized.

Because of this many naturals have ditched shampoo all together and opted for cowashing cleansers or just washing with botanical conditioners. I love cowashing but know shampoos are still necessary sometimes but when I use one, I make sure it is sulfate-free. Here are 8 of the top sulfate-free shampoos that naturals use, love and swear by to get the job done.

The Truth About Glycerin for Natural Hair (Environment Matters.)

by Charlene Walton of TexturedTalk.com

Before now using glycerin for natural hair had always been a tricky topic for me. I sort of understood the purpose of the ingredient in hair products but I was still lost on the whole weather, dew point aspect. Like many, I saw other popular bloggers and vloggers using glycerin for natural hair, creating DIY recipes so I figured why not. Glycerin is also listed in about every product I own so I figured the ingredient…couldn’t hurt right?

The good news is ever since I started blogging I’ve become way more informed about the science behind growing and maintaining healthy natural hair and my research game is on another level. (Yay me!) Instead of just taking someone else’s word, I now seek out additional information to form my judgement. Now I know everyone doesn’t have time for that, which is why you are here so let’s dive right in! And if you were completely lost after reading the first paragraph then definitely keep reading.

Did SheaMoisture Change Their Formula? (Updates)

**Updates**

**Response from SheaMoisture after the jump**

CN Says:
CN commenter, Tinycurls, straight up #Matlocked the situation, so I headed over to BootsUK to check it out. I grabbed the only SheaMoisture product in my arsenal (Coconut Hibiscus Curl and Style Milk) and compared the ingredients on my bottle to the ingredients on the site (click image to enlarge):
top: ingredient list on BootsUK for Curl and Style Milk
Bottom: ingredient label on my bottle of Curl and Style Milk

This appears to be a completely different product?

*in my Katt Williams voice* If I should just so happen to put GLYCERIN in my hurr, uh... there will be some effects.  I clicked through a few other products and all of them had glycerin listed in the top five ingredients. #ICannot

Of course I'll withhold judgement until I hear from a SheaMoisture rep (maybe this is how they roll in the UK? Are these throwback ingredients, or nah?).

Check back for updates,
Nik

SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie
vs
SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie?

So, when I heard that SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie was now being sold in a family size jar, I knew that was the size I needed-because my hair loves it. I went to Walmart and purchased the family size and immediately knew something was amiss when I opened it. It had the consistency of the Curl and Style Milk (Huh!? What!?), it was runny, not thick and creamy. I assumed something was wrong with it and no way was I putting it on my hair. I took it back to the store because I was sure it was a bad batch-I mean it just had to be. To my surprise and chagrin all of the family sizes on Walmart’s shelf had the same consistency when I shook the jar.
