Model Maria Borges is no stranger to the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. And third time's a charm.
Having walked in the acclaimed show both in 2013 and 2014, everyone couldn't help but notice something strikingly different about Borges' appearance. This year, the 23-year-old Angolan beauty chose to rock her natural hair TWA rather than conceal it with a wig like she did in her prior Victoria's Secret shows.

Maria's presence during the event was effortlessly confident; her beautiful facial features and amazing physique statuesquely glided down the runway in the most graceful way. But according to celebrity news blogger B. Scott, Borges wasn't so sure of herself before the show actually happened. "I told my agent I wanted to walk in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show," the model stated. "I was nervous, but I had to do it." Last night a wig-free Borges caught all of us off guard.

On the Couch with Sheryl Underwood- She Explains Natural Hair Remarks

Yesterday I received a massive amount of messages regarding statements made by comedian and Talk Show Host, Sheryl Underwood. Several of you, up in arms, forwarded me the synopsis from TheRoot, requesting that I start a petition, write into CBS or just publicly share an outrage over the comments she made on her show, ‘The Talk.” After reading through the transcript and watching the video myself, my initial thoughts were that A.) Yes, she’s a comedian and afforded some manner of freedom to entertain and provoke people but more importantly B.) What was said marginalized a large group of women (on a national stage) and in my opinion, spoke to what I feel is a deeper issue, one that the ladies of are not at all unfamiliar with.

Oprah Magazine Shouts Out

Yesterday evening, I received this tweet-

Random and friggin' awesome, right?! I had no idea.  After inquiring further, Kiva sent me several images of the mini shout-out. Apparently, 'online natural hair support groups like' inspired Dominican artist, Firelei Báez to begin sketching portraits of women with natural hair.  I checked out her website and *in my Oprah voice* LOOOOOVE it!  So, thanks Firelei and congrats on your O Mag feature!

It's on page 26 of the November issue.

Alrighty ladies, I must bid you adieu for now. I have a 13 hour drive ahead of me and I am not in the mood.  Keep us in your thoughts!

Nik on TV- ABC's Katie Couric (Updated!)

So remember back in May when we went to Carolina to witness Hubby’s doctoral hooding? Well during the ceremony, I received an email from Katie Couric’s crew, asking if I’d be interested in appearing on a show about the psychology of hair. Now I usually think of daytime TV as ratchet, but seeing as how this was the same Katie Couric that buried Sarah Palin's vice-presidential bid, while simultaneously launching Tina Fey's career and got Wayne to infamously proclaim, 'I'm a gangsta Ms. Katie', I was like... ‘hell yeah Ms. Katie!’. So tune in tomorrow at 4pm Eastern to witness not only my 2 seconds with Katie but also the tons of gorgeous naturals in the audience… TIVO it and see who you can spot!

What I Wore-

Orange Blazer gifted from Romwe (also worn HERE)
Shirt- Express
Red Skinny Jeggings- Pacsun
Shoes- Macys

*clutches pearls* Miss Jessies w/heat stretched roots via a blowdryer and air concentrator!  I was in full product junky mode and tried the Stretch Silkening Cream.  As I mentioned in this post,  the silkening cream was nearly a win.  It gave me stretched, soft, defined hair that didn't make it more than 12 hours and had this terrible tacky feel to it. But yeah, it looked good!

All in all it was a good experience and I was in the company of some pretty amazing women.  It sucks being at the mercy of producers though... I have this love/hate thing with media.  It'll be nice when 'natural hair' gets more than 2 minutes on a show. We're doing it, dammit... folks betta recognize!

Later Gators,

I'm Among Essence's 'Young, Black & Amazing'!

Essence named me one of their 35 Under 35 Young, Black & Amazing.  As I clicked through one fabulous name after another, I assumed they must have made a mistake, but even if they did, I'll take it!

Also, while I have you, what do you think of the new comment section?!

Besides what I hope will provide you with an easier and more convenient experience, it'll also help facilitate giveaways!  At the end of this month, the top 15 posters will be put in a drawing to win a gift basket... two will win!  Comment on old articles, new articles, ask questions, answer a few... it all counts!

Good luck!

Nik on TV- MSNBC's Melissa Harris-Perry! (PICS)

I arrived in NYC on Saturday night, reeling with nervous energy.  Doped up on antibiotics, a night cap was out of the question, so I barricaded myself in my hotel room and called it one.  Sunday came and I was up and at 'em by 5am, even though my alarm clock was set for 6:30... almost as if I could hear Gia dragging her sippy cup across the slats in her crib demanding milk #ThePeopleDemandMilk #Attica

Tried to practice in the mirror but felt silly, so I decided to clear my mind and fill the empty space with an incessant stream of Bey, Kanye and for some reason, Nicki Minaj.  My phone was blowing up with text messages from Momma, Daddy and Hubby wishing me well, but the message from my Mother-in-law spoke volumes-

'Don't be nervous. You will be just like Tyra that time. You will be anointed. It won't hit until it's time. Luv you.'

I headed down to the breakfast buffet. Couldn't eat. Balancing my ill packed garment bag and enormous purse on stilettos, I wobbled out of the hotel to the town car, threw everything in the back and told the driver to give me a sec so I could run back in to get some cash from the ATM.  He said, 'Don't worry about a tip, the studio puts everybody in this hotel and it's only 2 blocks from their front door.'  I thanked him, but still got some cash and 10 minutes later he dropped me off on a busy street.  Standing in the midst of what I later found out was the beginning of the Puerto Rican Day parade, with a searing headache, I called hubby. Even with all of the technology in the world at my fingertips, I still asked him, who was hundreds of miles away, where the nearest Walgreens was!

The conversation went something like this-

Hubby: Isn't there a Walgreens at Time Square?

Me: I don't know.  How close is that?

Hubby: Aren't you at 30 Rock?

Me: Oh Sh*t, um yeah, I guess so!

A wave of realization came over me and for some reason I turned around and looked at the building like Tracy Morgan was gonna run out and say something ignorant.  All this time, I hadn't put that together-  MSNBC... NBC... 30 Rock, duh.

Unlike the Top Flight Security folks at The Tyra Show, NBC let me keep my cell AND my camera, check out the view-

CurlyNikki Q&A Column on Essence

Hola Chicas!

Every Thursday, Essence is celebrating the amazingness that is our hair with their 'Natural Hair Revolution' feature. Already in its third week, you'll find hair care advice, inspirational stories and styling tips. But beginning today, they incorporated a weekly Q&A column, 'Ask CurlyNikki'! So every Thursday morning, you can find my response to a reader's most urgent curly conundrum.

Obviously, I don't have all the answers. So like we do here on, I'd appreciate it if you mosey on over and leave comments to cover anything I may have missed! Thanks!

Later Gators,

CurlyNikki on KMOV's 'Great Day St. Louis'

I'm back in the Lou! One of you (the producer named no names) reached out to KMOV's 'Great Day St. Louis' and told them about the site... they booked me for today, a day strangely enough, I had already planned to be in town. So thank you, anonymous STL reader :0)

Check out the clip:

My hair--
So remember the Orlando pics? Yeah, I have yet to wash my hair, lol. I simply re-twisted using Qhemet's Cocoa Tree Detangling Ghee, and sealed with Burts Bees Oil. Every night I'd re-moisturize, apply oil, and wear my heat cap for 10 minutes. Yesterday, I released the twists (they were in for a little less than a week), to allow it grow in size prior to the interview, and applied a little Aveda Anti-Humectant pomade. I slept in my bonnet last night and rolled out of bed this A.M. with fluffy, happy hair.

CurlyNikki Appears on the Tyra Banks Show!!!!

Thanks to Mae, if you missed it, you can check it below!

UPDATE 2/7/2010: Thank you guys for all the compliments and kind words on the forum, Twitter,, and! It means a lot... y'all make me feel so special :-p
Now, who knows if it's possible (and the process) to take the dvr clip and put it on Youtube for those that missed it? If you've got the know how, shoot me an email!

UPDATE 1/31/2010: The show will air on February 5th at 4pm EST. My mini segment is toward the end of the show. DVR it!

This afternoon I appeared on the Tyra Banks show!!! I literally hit the floor when she shared that she visits and loves!

The show was not about curly or natural hair...but they tied me in at the end! I was a nervous wreck for the past few days, but today, surprisingly, I was eerily calm. I was given the chance to tell (the short version, lol) my story, pub the blog, and she then introduced me as the newest edition to her website,! It was surreal...but an absolutely friggin' wonderful experience!

I of course, did my own hair(Twist-n-Curl), and the makeup artist respected my wishes to keep my face as natural as possible. I'm not a makeup person, so I was freaking out when 30 minutes had passed and we were not finished! She was really sweet, super professional, and did a wonderful job! I just got home an hour ago, and I'm still wearing the 'mandatory' false lashes, and have no idea how to remove them...I'll be googling that tonight!

Tyra is even more beautiful in person...inside and out. Her wardrobe, hair, and make-up staff were fabulous! Thanks to all of my lovely curly readers for your support...she received and loved your emails about, and I'm certain it played a part in helping me get on the show!!!!

As soon as they give me the air date, y'all will be the first to know!

The Tyra Banks Show airs Weekdays from 3 to 5PM EST on The CW.
