Roxanne Roxanne: The Roxanne Shanté Story on Netflix!

Before Cardi B, Nikki Minaj, Remy Ma, Lil Kim, Eve, Foxy Brown, Queen Latifah, Salt & Pepper and every female rapper you can think of, there was Roxanne Shanté. 14-year-old Lolita Shanté Gooden released her debut single Roxanne Speaks Out in 1984 and became rap’s first female star. She released Roxanne Roxanne and The Real Roxanne and both albums hit the Billboard chart. The Queensbridge native had a gift for freestyling and her battles became epic both in the street and on wax; the Roxanne Wars were a yearlong saga that followed Roxanne and her rivals. Roxanne didn’t care who she battled and she commanded respect and made male rappers take notice.

Roxanne's Twist-n-Curl Results!

Hey Nikki,
I've been playing around w/ your TnC style and I think I've found the regime that works for me.
On day 1, I cowash my hair w/ HE Hello Hydration Moisturizing Conditioner. I rinse out about 50% of the condish and squeeze out the excess water from my hair. I then add a mix of shea butter, castor oil, glycerine, and aloe vera gel to hair and apply my hair into 30 twist. I then sleep w/my damp hair uncovered on a satin pillow.
The next day, I wear my hair in these twist. Then that night, I apply a small amount of my rosemary-sage spritz to dampen each twist and seal ends w/my shea butter mix. I then place each twist in rollers, cover w/ a satin scarf, and go to bed.
In the morning, I remove the rollers, uncoil the twist (but don't separate), and just shake my hair for fullness.
I love this style and get a lot of compliments whenever I wear it :)

I've been natural for over 6 years now and I'm happy to say that many of the ladies in my family have joined the movement. This is me, my mother, and sister.

Fabiola from NYC
I love love your blog. In this picture I was at a friend's wedding rocking my TWA. The night before, I washed my hair with Nubian heritage, and then twisted using Ecostyler Gel (this stuff is amazing). My curl definition was great.

Ta-Nefer
Hey Curly Nikki & Friends,
My name is Ta-Nefer, I ve been natural for about 9 years now. When I started transitioning in 2001, there wasn't a whole lot of info and resources out there for natural hair. So I have had a lot of trial and error, I still struggle with breakage, growth and maintaining length. I had Locs from 2003-2008, so My BIG CHOP was the locs and not a perm. My hair was off to a good start however I wanted to experiment with styles and got a few presses which I regret. So I had to cut again. I'd love to walk you through my 9 year hair journey I have pictures for every step of the way.
This picture featured is from last year at a 90's themed party. The style is a twist out. It was the best looking twist out that I ever had and it lasted for week. To this day I have not gotten my twist out to look like this one. It was greasy though, Im a little heavy with the products, I like shine.

Roxanne
I just went to the Maxwell and Jill Scott concert last Friday. I loved my twistouts and wanted to share.

Day 2 hair on a Cruise to Mexico with a group of family and friends. This was the morning we returned to port before leaving the ship. I co-washed with Suave Tropical Coconut Conditioner before adding more Suave as a leave-in, applied oil and brushed through with a Denman brush to distribute. Finished it off with Olive Oil Eco Styler Gel. It lasts about 4-5 days and even held up to the wind and humidity in the Gulf!

Jessica
My hair is pinned up in a messy puff! I miss everyone. I am home now, spending time with family. My YouTube account will be active soon! Thanks for the support and everyone looks fab!!!!

This is me on my lunch break. I did the chunky Twist-n-Curl using Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding. I also tried your method of flat twisting the roots. I love it!

I love your blog and although I’ve been natural 14 years I haven’t fully loved and embraced it until I found your site. Wow, how I wish I had this when I started this journey so long ago! Anyway, your most recent post about less is more inspired me…I stopped being so heavy handed with my products and my hair is absolutely lovin’ it. This is a picture of me on a 3-day old twist out! Never before I have had this much definition and softness. Thanks for the tip!!

This is me sitting in my car before I left from work. This was a 2 day old twist out done w/ Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding & Coconut Oil w/ Edges Pomade to slick the front back.

This was on my way to get my daughter's locs re-twisted. She was my inspiration to go natural. It is the result of a twist out I did after having my two strand twists for two weeks. I kept my twists moisturized with a mix of Infusium 23 and water. I used coconut oil to keep my ends moisturized. The twist-out lasted for 5 days.

Long time no fierceness pictures sent to you--- so here you go my preggers and curly friend. My baby Rinah has growed up! She too is quite curly…

Natural Hair and Halloween!

Hola Chicas!

How was your Halloween?  I stayed in last night and passed out candy to the kiddies...making the costume-less ones tell me jokes!  I stocked my fav candy, so I probably ate more of it than I handed out...which is why I now have a stomachache on top of the head cold I already had.  Good times. Anyway, I asked that the party going CN.com readers share their pics with us...so that we can live vicariously through them!  Nine readers answered the call (click on images to enlarge):

Remember Roxanne from previous spotlights?  She dropped jaws and turned heads last night when she stepped out with this BODACIOUS FRO!  No Afro wigs here :)

Christina and her roomie went hard last night with their natural hair too:
Hi Nikki,
Happy Halloween all! We had pouring rain here :(  I was a French Maid for Halloween, and my roommate was a vampire. We both did a Braid -n-Curl, but hers didn't fully dry so it came out a bit frizzy. My curls are a day old in these pictures.

Shelita's gorgeous babe:
Hi Nikki,
Here are some pics of my 7yr old daughter in her Cleopatra costume. She's rockin' a twist-out (her favorite style) from 3 day old twist. These pics were taken after a LONG night of partying and trick-or-treating. Enjoy! :-)

Veronica:
I wore my natural hair as mouse ears!

Amber:
Hi Nikki!
Love the blog! I just wanted to share my Halloween pic of my costume as a "Cosmo Cover Girl" with my own beautiful, natural, curly hair!

Dominique:
Hi Nikki,
I was a ventriloquist doll and I rocked my natural hair!

Moniero:
Halloween has to be one of my favorite times of the year.....this year I was Lady Luck.  I relied on my trusty up-do.....here are some of my favorite pictures!

Beverly:
I was a cavewoman for Halloween and found it to be the perfect costume for my 4 day old wash & go (left in aloe vera gel my new love). I actually won best overall costume at work!!

Roxanne's Detangling Routine- Type 4a Hair

Hi Nikki,

Hope all is well. I read on your blog for readers to submit their successful detangling process.

Mine is extremely simple and works really well on my mostly type 4A hair.
I wear my hair in some type of twists 90% of the time. My twists range from CHUNKY to small. However, I tend to prefer the medium to large sized twists. I hate spending a lot of time on my hair and my hair tends to tangle easily when worn loose for a period of time. I also found that brushing and combing was a bit too harsh on my strands, so I have eliminated them from my routine.

So here is what I do. Pictures 1-5 show my steps.

Pic1. What my hair looks like dry in large twists (about 25).

Pic 2. Wet my hair w/ cool water until it's completely saturated.

Pic 3. Once hair is completely saturated, apply about 1-2 TBSP of favorite condish (mine is Herbal Essence Hello Hydration-blue bottle) throughout hair. Must be a condish that provides great slip. This condish will be used as a leave-in. I then untwist my hair 1 twist at a time and in a slow downward motion (about 5-6 times), I loosen up my strands and remove shed hairs. Once done, I apply Qhemet Alma Oil Nourishing Pomade to my strands and re-twist. I also use my favorite homemade Shea butter mix for this process. You just need to use something that provides your hair w/ additional moisture--it helps if it can double as a sealant. I then proceed to the next twists until all of my hair has been detangled and re-twisted.

Pic 4. I lose very little hair detangling this way. I also make sure to work through any tangles/mattes with my fingers so that tangling isn't an issue. My hair stays nice and moisturized for days. If I desire to make smaller twists, I just untwist my large twists 1 at a time and divide them into two. And if I want to rock a cute Twist-n-Curl, I just apply rollers to the ends after I detangle/re-twist, and untwist in the morning.

Pic 5. I love the versatility of my hair. Here is what my hair looks like after detangling and retwisting. The process takes me about 20-30min. I can do this every 2-3 days or once a week.
Hope this helps!!
