Respectability Politics vs. Live & Let Live

Cardi B
By Erma BreAnn

Now the dust has settled on the Cardi B and Nicki Minaj encounter, let us discuss their behavior around “the white folks.” I’m kidding - let’s not. Their behavior was wrong, we know that, but it doesn’t matter where they were or who they were around; wrong is wrong everywhere. After hearing many conversations the first thing I hear is the disappointment in their actions around, in Nicki Minaj’s own words, “upper echelon” also known as “white folks.” These statements make me cringe. Everyday I see evidence in brainwashing and post-traumatic stress disorder when we say and do things that help validate the oppressor and racist actions. When we use this language we are saying to others and ourselves we believe we are inherently inferior, which is not at all the case. Yet we still feel we shouldn’t be seen or take up space in a manner not approved of by white folks.

Are Men Intimidated By Funny Women? Tiffany Haddish Thinks So.

Tiffany Haddish & John Legend
By Veronica Wells

The other day I fell into a Youtube rabbit hole and discovered an interview between Tiffany Haddish and John Legend. The two talked about all sorts of interesting things but one thing Haddish said stuck with me. John asked her: “Do you find guys like women that make them laugh? I have a wife that makes me laugh all the time.”

Tiffany: “I think guys that are confident in themselves, love women who make them laugh. I think guys that are very insecure—which is what I seem to attract— they don’t like it so much. They be cool the first few dates, then they’ll be like, ‘Oh wait, she can control this whole room.’”

Tiffany Haddish and Tracy Morgan Bring the Laughs in 'The Last O.G.'

Tiffany Haddish & Tracy Morgan
By Mwabi Kaira

One thing people that do time wish for is a pause button. They want to come home from their bid and find things as they left them. In the new TBS sitcom The Last O.G. Tray (Tracy Morgan) is a Brooklyn hustler who gets busted for on-the corner activities that sends him away to prison for 15 years. The night he gets busted, he and his girl Shay (Tiffany Haddish) are cuddled on the couch watching Kelly Clarkson about to win American Idol. Shay laying on his chest and the laughter and jokes they share right when she is about to tell him something are not a strong enough pull to keep Tray from the corner when summoned. Shay begs him not to go but he does. She watches him get arrested from her window.

To Critics Who Feel Tiffany Haddish Is Doing Too Much

There are plenty of Black women America loves that I care for just a little bit less. And while a few close friends and family might know how I feel, I try not to express those sentiments publicly because there are no shortage of people who talk sh*t about Black women. The practice itself is quite profitable, actually.

And while Tiffany Haddish has been America’s new darling for a solid year, there is a sect of Black people who now believe she is “doing too much.” And a few of these people are not afraid to speak up about it.

She didn’t give up her search and was happy to be reunited with him and connect as a young woman. Although everything between them wasn’t always smooth sailing, they established a relationship until his untimely death last year just as her Hollywood star was rising.

I laughed along with millions watching last summer’s blockbuster Girls Trip and discovered breakout star Tiffany Haddish. I didn’t remember seeing her in anything else before this and saw her everywhere after. Her Breakfast Club interview stood out the most to me; she had quite a story to tell that went beyond the jokes. When she said her father was from Eritrea, the small Northeast African country on the red sea coast, I was even more intrigued.
