Monica- A Story of Transition

-Were you a long term or short term transitioner, and why?
I guess I was a long term transistioner. I cut all the perm hair off about 2 years after my last perm. The reason for the length of time was that I never even considered the “big chop”. I had damaged my hair many many times before, and had always grown my hair out to a length that I felt was acceptable before cutting the damaged hair off completely.

-When did you BC? What was your initial reaction to your natural hair?
About 2 years after the last time I permed my hair. I didn’t have an initial reaction. I knew what my natural hair looked and felt like because I only permed for 4 years. I was relieved when all the permed hair was gone because my hair was so much more healthy.

-What was your transition routine (products included)?
My transistion routine consisted of weaves. There was a girl that went to my school that did excellent sew-in weaves for an excellent price. My hair was growing out super fast under the weaves because I wasn’t manipulating my hair at all, and I looked and felt pretty during the process. Every time I’d take my weave down, I’d cut a little more hair off, and then get it sewn right back in again. I don’t remember exactly, but I’m thinking that my products at that time were Pantene Relaxed and Natural shampoo and conditioner. I’ve never been one to moisturize, but I’m sure I used oil sheen on my weave, lol.

-How did you moisturize your hair to prevent breakage at the new growth line?
I didn’t. I guess I felt like any breakage I got was hair that needed to come out because it was damaged anyway. I didn’t have a lot of breakage anyway because my hair was braided underneath the weave the whole time.

-Why did you choose to go natural?
I chose to stop perming because the last time I went to the shop to get a perm, the stylist refused to perm it because as he was basing my scalp, so much hair came out in his hands he could’ve made a ponytail with it. He said my hair was way too damaged for him to put a perm in it, so he pressed it out instead. When he was done, my hair looked better than it had looked in years. So, I went natural because my hair was so damaged from the perm and because it looked and felt better without it.

-What was your staple transition style?
My style of choice is and has always been the roller set. It’s easy for me to do and maintain and I like how it looks on me better than any other style. 🙂

I know this is two years later, but I wonder if you sat under the hair dryer once your hair was set or, did you let your hair air dry?
