Kelly B.- A Story of Transition

-Were you a long term or short term transitioner, and why?
I was a short term transitioner. The plan was to transition for a year, but that point where the two textures met was killing me!! Plus, once I started getting some new growth and I saw the waves and curls of my natural hair, I was too curious lol.

-When did you BC? What was your initial reaction to your natural hair?
I BC’d on September 27 of 08. One day I just took a pair of scissors out of boredom and chopped it off! Halfway through I thought “OMG, what am i doing?!” but the damage was already done, hahah. It took me some time, but I eventually got used to it.

-What was your transition routine (products included)?
There actually were no products included. I transitioned with a wig. I deep conditioned my hair every week, and everyday I used beeswax and put my hair in a ponytail and threw the wig on. It was fun while it lasted, lol.

-What was your staple hair style during the transition?
My wig!

-How did you moisturize your hair to prevent breakage at the new growth line?
I deep conditioned with warm olive oil and a plastic bag. That kept my hair moisturized during the week.

-Why did you choose to go natural?
Honestly, I was just tired of seeing my hair in my hands and all over my sink. I’ve also just been very curious about it for a long time and figured “why not?”. Ever since my chop I’ve felt completely liberated and learned things about myself I never thought I would…
