-What is your natural hair story?
The first time I tried to go natural was in 2002. I went without a relaxer for 8 months and then I decided to relax again. I didn’t know how to care for both textures of hair. Also, people were negative about what I was doing and I just decided not to continue with it. Why did I let them get to me? You have to mentally ready for what is to come when you decide to go back to letting your hair go back to its natural state of being. In Feb. of 2005 I diecided that I was ready and that I wasn’t going to let anyone change my mind. I transitioned for a year then I BC’d in Feb. of 2006. I love the decision that I made. There are still people out there that think I should relax my hair and all but, I did this for me and I love it! This time around my mind was made up and I have been natural ever since. I made myself knowledgeable are the care and maintenance of my natural hair.
-What is your current hair regimen?
I co-wash twice a week and I detangle once a week. I alternate between detangling with my Jilbere comb and my fingers. I dust my ends regularly and I do a micro trim twice a year. I use Suave Topical Coconut Conditioner to co-wash and detangle. Previously I deep conditioned every 6 weeks but now I am doing it weekly. This is very important.
Once I have finished co-washing my hair, I apply Elasta QP H2 to my hair along with my Nourishing Hair Butter. If I want to do a wash-n-go I apply S-Curl Texturizing and Styling Gel (the one in the gray jar with the blue top). I apply it in sections with my fingers. I then Shake my hair and apply an ouchless hair band. If I want really defined curls that hang, instead of applying the S-Curl Syling gel I apply Clear Ice Hair Gel by Ampro. I always make sure I have a moisturizer on before I apply any gel to my hair. I then apply the head band and wear my hair out, do a fro hawk, or wear my side pony tail.
-Tell us about your line of products:
Nature’s Indulgence by Dionne actually evolved from my love of candles. I started off just making candles. When I chose to go natural, I researched different butters, oils, vitamins, etc that would be good for the hair and skin. I experimented for a year and half with my recipes. I tested all of my products on friends, family, co-workers and on people I didn’t even know. I then decided that I would offer my products to the public. My line of products include Hair Care, Skin Care, Candles and products for men. I believe in taking care of yourself from the inside out. We only get one of us so we must take care of our precious hair, skin and body.
-What are your 3 favorite ingredients, and why?
My favorite 3 ingredients are Shea Butter, Coconut Oil and Grapefruit Seed Extract.
Shea Butter is a universal moisturizer. It can be used from the top of your head to the soles of your feet. It doesn’t clog your pores or your hair shaft. It is a natural sunscreen for your hair and for your skin. We need as much protection of the sun’s harmful rays as possible. Shea butter also helps to restore elasticity to our skin and hair. You can use Shea butter alone or in a mixture of your own.
Coconut Oil is a natural hair conditioner. It penetrates the hair shaft and helps out the damaged areas whether if be from excessive brushing, combing or dryness. Coconut oil is anti-fungal. If you have dandruff it can help rid your scalp of batceria and fungii. A little goes a long way.
Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) has is a natural andtioxidant and preservative. It kills and protects from viruses, bacteria, and fungii. Our hair and skin are exposed to the polluted atmosphere daily and we have to maintain a clean body and scalp to keep bacteria, fungi, etc at bay. GSE as well as Coconut Oil helps clean the scalp. Almost all of my products contain GSE. If you want to grow a head of healthy hair, you have to make sure that you have a healthy scalp which will lead to strands/curls of hair.
-What is the secret to properly moisturized hair?
The secret to properly moisturized hair is water, water, water and a moisturizer that penetrates your hair shaft and not sit on top of it like mineral oil does. Deep conditioning your hair is a must for properly moisturizing your hair. Our hair loves water which helps get moisture to the hair shaft. You need to retain that moisture so it is best to use a good conditioner to wash and condition your hair as well as a good moisturizer alone after washing your hair. Remember to drink plenty of water as well. You hair will love you for it!
