Two of my favorite curly friends, HeatherNicole, and Naturally Leslie, gave Aussie Moist a rave review, and told me to check it out. So, me being the raging PJ I am, purchased a bottle yesterday…despite the fact that I already own 4 family sized bottles of Hello Hydration! The ingredients resemble my beloved Herbal Essence Hello Hydration, even down to the modified cone. In a previous article I discussed what sets amodimethicone and other similar molecules, such as bis-aminopropyl dimethicone, and trimethyl silylamodimethicone, apart from other cones. According to Tonya McKay of NaturallyCurly,
“Amodimethicone and other similarly modified silicone polymers are considered to be among the best high-performance conditioning polymers currently available to the hair-care product formulator. They provide many unique benefits, including the following:
- Provide deep conditioning
- Provide targeted conditioning to areas of particularly damaged hair
- Protect from thermal damage
- Increase color retention
- Resist build up
- Impart gloss and shine
- These modified silicones seem to be of particular benefit for those of us with damaged hair, permanently colored hair or those concerned about the buildup of conditioning agents .
When using Aussie Moist, or Herbal Essence Hello Hydration, you will need to shampoo to completely remove the cone. Luckily, you won’t have to resort to the dreaded lauryl sulfates- shampoos with cocamidopropyl betaine will suffice. Remember, I use Giovanni 50/50 or Tea Tree shampoo from Target or Whole Foods. I shampoo bi-weekly, sometimes less if I’ve used Bentonite.
I put Aussie to the test the same way I’ve done previous ones. I loaded up one side of my head with Hello Hydration, and the other half with Aussie Moist. I let it sit while I handled my shower-time duties, then proceeded to detangle. Both sides felt identical! Aussie Moist, like Hello Hydration, made detangling a breeze. It was super slippery, creamy (a bit creamier/heavier than Hello Hydration), and smelled heavenly. I give it two thumbs up and definitely recommend it. I’ve never used Hello Hydration as a leave-in due to it’s nuclear blue color…I don’t know…its just weird to me. The clean white color of Aussie Moist may lead to some leave-in experimentation in the near future. I’ll keep you gals posted.
Bottom Line: If you’re a Hello Hydration girl, this one is worth a try. It smells great, has excellent slip, and is very moisturizing. It’s slightly thicker than Hello Hydration, so I added a bit of water post application to thin it out a bit. All in all, it’s a great, cheap conditioner. A curly can NEVER have too many detangling conditioners.

No I think she means you will get build up from the cones if you cowash only.
So do you mean you have to shampoo after using the conditioner? Sorry I'm really lost here. Anyone can answer
I've only been using organic products, do you think the Aussie Moist will be alright? I would love a cheap conditioner to detangle my hair and not use all of my better products!
I tried Aussie Moist for the first time yesterday (7/26/10)and fell in LOVE!! I am definitely adding this one to my rotation of co-wash conditioners!
I LOVE THIS CONDISH! Thanks for the tip on the leave in spritz!
Aussie Moist has definitely made it's way on to my HG list! I was using HE HH for co-washes, but haven't picked it up nor have had the desire to use it since! For me, Aussie Moist has tons more slip and I can detangle my thick curly hair in 3 minutes tops!
Aussie Moist is also my no#1 leave-in spritz diluted to 1 part conditioner to 4 parts water.
I've been avoiding silicones ever since I went natural, but have found that they are the only thing that keeps the hair on the back of my head from feeling like absolute straw… Hello Hydration is my conditioner of choice now. You mentioned that while using these conditioners you would have to use shampoo to remove the product fully, but I wonder if my diluted castille soap is enough to take it off my strands?
So it’s almost ridiculous how I will buy ANYTHING you feature on your blog if I can find it. Yesterday I went and picked up a bottle of Aussie….even though I have two 1L bottles of hello hydration…lol. Needless to say it worked great and I used almost the whole bottle washing out my henna yesterday night. But it’s no better or worse then my beloved HH and actually it is a bit more exspensive. I would purchase again, but only if on sale!!!
Aussie has been on point with their conditioners for many years. I would agree with what you said Nikki.. I had some and threw it out, but I’m thinking to go back and revisit.
i just started using aussie myself. i absolutely love it. it might be edging out hello hydration for me. main reason is that i believe aussie skips one of the “bad” ingredients that i’ve been trying to overlook in hello hydration. i have also had great luck leaving the aussie conditioner in.
I bought some of the Aussie Moist 2 weeks ago. Got the family sized situation at walmart and I love it! Mostly because its thick,my hair is so thick that I run through a lot of hello hydration. This was right up my alley I enjoy the scent I’m going to try the moist leave in cream soon
Nikki are you worried about the benzyl alcohol drying your hair out? I know you do a lot of deep treatments.
Nikki, as you mentioned Giovanni 50/50 shampoo, I was wondering if you find it stripping. It contains olefin sulfonate which behaves similarly to sulfates and in my experience very harsh as well. Let me know what you think. Thanks.
I have this conditioner and I loooovvvveeee it, I also have HH and I think this one is great. I’m glad that you found it.
I love the leave in conditioner spray by Aussie!!
I was eying (eyeing?) that bottle of Aussie Moist in the Pharmacy the other day. I walked away though because it wasn’t the purpose of my visit and I have a bad habit of sometimes spending spontaneously instead of saving. So needless to say I backed away slowly but I will definitely pick it up when I need a new bottle of conditioner!!!
