“What I love about my hair is that it’s making me appreciate me. I grew up being told that natural hair was “unprofessional” and I should perm to maintain the professional appearance at work. I transitioned while living in a very non-diverse part of the world (literally, 97% white according to the census) working as the only minority female engineer in my company. I immediately recognized the attitude difference. Not a bad one, but in a way that I was stronger, to buck the trend that straight hair is professional. I had questions from mom, dad, boyfriend, and others, but I did it for me and it was fantastic. I notice I walk taller and stronger, and for that, I am very grateful.“
