Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Conditioner Review

By January 27th, 202127 Comments

Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Conditioner ReviewI am so unfaithful! My PJism has yet again got the best of me with my new found love Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Conditioner. As I mentioned earlier, I saw the commercial, and lost my mind 😀
I used to use Garnier — the Soft Curl Cream was a favorite early on in my natural journey. Since then, I never really paid much attention to Garnier…that commercial must have caught me during a vulnerable moment.

The ingredient list is not the best, but it does contain two that my curls can’t seem to get enough of — Behentrimonium Chloride (Behentrimonium Methosulfate’s cousin), and Amodimethicone.

How I used it:

  • Got in the shower and wet my hair down as usual. I then sectioned it into two (left and right).
  • Applied S&S to both sides in a smooshing motion.
  • Passed my head back under the shower stream for a second for better distribution and added slip.
  • Clipped the hair up and out of the way.
  • Completed my shower rituals.
  • Took down the right side and finger detangled a bit — detangling the rest under the water stream. Followed up with the left side.
  • Detangling under the stream washed away most of the conditioner, so I added another glob of S&S to each side. I then passed my head back under the shower stream for distribtuion and got out of the shower.
  • Made 10 twists- 5 on each side.
  • Sealed the ends with Oyin Shine and Define.
  • Set on rollers.
  • Slept under celing fan for faster drying time.
  • Un-twisted in the morn, and fluffed throughout the day.

The results– soft, defined, and shiny hair! The hold is about the same as DevaCare One…much stronger than Oyin’s Honey Hemp, but not as strong as a gel. The frizzies were smoothed out, and hubby stated that “it looks shiny without looking or feeling greasy”. He hates it when my hair is product-y, and the S&S passed the test. I love the results, especially for 5 dollars. Big thanks to Teri for opening my eyes to leaving in rinse-out conditioners! This has changed my life, lol. S&S will definitely be a mainstay in my product rotation.

Pros:

  • Excellent definition
  • Light-medium hold
  • Light, fresh fragrance
  • Easy to distribute- very creamy
  • Great slip for detangling (but not as good as Herbal Essence’s Totally Twisted)
  • Cheap and readily available!

Cons:

  • Light on moisture- may need to add another product to ends
  • That’s all I got!!!

I too love this product line. I used the frizz serum while I transitioned. The leave in is great too for second day hair!! Didn't really like the shampoo, too harsh but the frizz milk, serum, condish and leave in are the bomb!!

I have been looking for a treatment to make my hair shiny as well. I love the way Japanese women's hair looks like silk and I wanted to do the same thing without using a straightner or gels or anything.

My salon tech recommended the Hydrate Conditioner from Shielo (called the Hydrate Vibrancy Conditioner) and it lives up to its title. It really hydrates your hair. When I finish using it, I feel and look like I have just been to the salon.

It completely gets rid of my frizz, which I tend to get a lot. I can be confident that I will have my hair conditioned just right each time I use it. It works by itself!

My hair looks shiny and soft. I love the way I highly recommend this product plus the price is something anyone can afford. Also, it smells really nice!

Thanks Ladies, my friend recommended the garnier fructis stuff and i looked at it yesterday in target but wanted to do some research on the product. I also noticed that they had a shampoo and conditioner line for curly hair. think i may have to add this to my shopping list.
    Thanks nikki and ladies.

I've only tried this one a few times and only as a co-wash, but next shampoo/dc day, I'll definitely be trying it as a leave-in for my twists/twist-out. Currently am using a water and Aussie Moist spritz for my leave-in followed by Shea Butter. It's the bomb for soft, frizz free curls, but wouldn't mind giving a 'cone' free conditioner a shot for my leave-in 🙂

Thanks for the advice was looking to a new conditioner to co wash with thats less pricey than my Avon Advanced techniques I do have colour treated hair and this has also caused my hair to frizz so easily.Do you think this will work well on my hair still?

I am sooooooooo in love with Garnier Fructis! It's really a great line! I really can't do without their Brilliantine Water-based Wax to slick my edges like no other! 🙂

  • Unknown says:

I just tried the new formula and it is fabulous… I'm selling my kccc and kckt as we speak… you may want to try Juices and Berries on top of this on wet hair… it is the greatest!

  • CURLYNIKKI says:

so, I used the one with the a-cone…now I'm scared! I just bought the new formulation today. I hope it works as well as the old?

Anon at 11:19, which formula do you have?

Libra08, let me know what you think about the new one! I'm going to try it Sunday.

  • Anonymous says:

I love this especially since the new formula has no CONSSSSS YEAHHH, this is awesome during the hot humid summer months, saturday I am going to buy a few more bottles I love it that much…. ladies did you notice the awesome ingredients in the new formula wowzers

  • Lena Jolie says:

I just love, love, LOVED this line before I went natural. For some odd reason I thought I needed to leave S&S alone during and after my transition(maybe the "sleek" in it fought against the natural in me; my hair…natural and sleek…yea right lol)The only product I haven't tried from S&S is the melting conditioner

My hair and I loved the S&S Fortifying Deep Conditioner back then; I think I'm going to test it on my curls when I buy more products

    I *heart* this blog

  • Anonymous says:

I just bought a sample size of this (thank goodness for sample sizes!) and I'm going to try it out tonight! I'm excited. The ingredients look good. It's affordable, and I don't have to pay for s&h. Plus it's vegan 🙂

My only issue with this product is I'm not sure whether or not Garnier tests on animals. It doesn't say that they don't and that makes me nervous. Does anyone know? =/

  • Libra08 says:

Okay so I had to go to two different stores to find the old version with the A-cone, and I had to go through all of the Sleek and Shines until I found it in the very back. I really want to try the new version without the cones to compare so I may be picking that one up too sometime later on this week. You have really been bringing out the PJ in me! First with the Oyin products now Garnier! You're lucky the Garnier was cheap or I would have boycotted the blog! J/K! I love this blog too much! Thank you so much for finding cheap alternatives :=)

Thank you sooo much for recommending something that is easily available in the UK and works so well!!
I ran out, bought it and tried it today and I am actually in shock — this is the first cheap product that gives my twist-out definition and softness at the same time!! I'm absolutely loving the fact its SO CHEAP!!! 😀

    Thanks Nikki!!

I am sitting under the dryer as I type with S&S in my hair doing a Twist & Curl. This is my first use, but from what I can tell, It's AWESOME!! It smells great, and my curls were super defined and soft. I had been using Aussie Moist as my rinsing conditioner and the Lustrasilk Mango & Shea as my leave-in. The Lustrasilk works good, but it left my hair dull, so I would have to use a glosser for shine.

My hair is so shiny and SOFT!! I used a mixture of the S&S conditioner & leave-in conditioning cream. I think this will be a keeper especially at a combined price of $7! I'll keep you posted on my results.

Hooray hooray – you've recommended something that is readily available in the UK – I follow you're blog and pretty much find that all your recommendations work fab with my hair so now you've recommended something I can buy here in the UK I will definitely be getting some!! Once again thanks Nikki!

  • Binti's Mom says:

    I'm loving it. That one's a keeper!

  • Britt says:

I have been using S&S for the past 2 weeks(trying out the CG method) and all I can say I WONDERFULLLLLLL! My TWA has 3b at the top and 4a/4b mixture everywhere else and because of this my hair tends to be dry and undefined but S&S does a great job. I have been wanting to try coils, so I plan to try GF's Bold It! Power Putty. I'll let you know how it turns out.

  • CURLYNIKKI says:

I need a new product like a need a hole in my head! Sorry for enabling you guys 🙂 But who is sorry for enabling me?!

  • Anonymous says:

would love to try new products but in this economy i need to finish what i have on hand before spending any more money

  • LovintheBlessin says:

OMG NIkki, shame on you! as soon as i saw the first post, i was like "is this girl supposed to be trying new products?" don't get me wrong, i'm glad you did because now i have something else to try, but be kind to the rest of us PJ's out there and stop enabling!

  • OMB says:

What a coincidence…. I'm using it now. I got it on sale a few weeks ago and decided to use it today. Its still in my hair as I'm typing. So far I'm very pleased!!!!!

  • tryn2figureitout says:

Your hair looks very moisturized and soft. *puts S&S on my list*

  • Anonymous says:

Looks great Nikki! Don't forget to keep us posted on your new routine. I can't wait to see who's been "hired and fired" LOL

  • Ms. Nwadike says:

i LOVE this conditioner. I use it as my staple leave-in. the new formula doesn't have the cone though, which is why i use it: i am curly girl. works the same to me though.

  • CURLYNIKKI says:

    Thanks chica!

I don't really do much to my hair in the meantime. I make sure to thoroughly condition on day one and I can usually get away with 4 days of moisturized hair. If not, then I add Shea Butter to the ends…but that's about it 🙂 Water based conditioners and such create frizz, and so I only use them on wash day.

    hth!

new to your blog and i LOVE it. Im trying the style and shine tonight actually. Ques though, what do you use on your hair daily? I have to mosturize daily, i use relaxed and natural cream but it has one of those cones further down on the list (dimethicone i believe) and i worried about build up now that ive learned all about the horror of cones! Also, i deep condition with humectress which has a cone (also domethicone i believe), its washed out though, is that and shampooing (albeit the following week) with baking soda sufficient in your opinion? THANKS SO MUCH! Again, love the blog!
