Styling with Herbal Essence Totally Twisted

By January 27th, 202133 Comments

Remember my review of Herbal Essence’s Totally Twisted Conditioner? Well, I used it as a styler with pretty decent results. My hair is shrinkier and a tad bit frizzier than usual, but I’m loving it. It’s very soft and feels as if I used nothing! This is day 2, and it was awfully humid… I did a chunky Twist-n-Curl with only 10 twists (5 on each side), applied Set it Free to the ends, and promptly set them on rods. The best part–it smells like I’m wearing a yummy perfume. I love TT’s fragrance! Have any of you left in Totally Twisted with great results?!

I started using TT as a leave condition in Nov 2010. Love the smell and the way my hair feels. When I ran out I switched to Hello Hydration which I also like the smell of. When I ran out of HH and wanted to go back to TT but was not sure I should as they changed the ingredients. No longer scented with Lavendar and Jade extract but with Cherry. It also now contains Behentrimonium Methosulfate which is not supposed to be harmful.

Follow up: I just noticed yesterday that TT's ingredient list no longer includes hard-core 'cones, just water-soluble ones. I'm the one with the 'cone allergy. So I'm returning to the fold! My hair smells wonderful!

I used it this morning for my co-wash. I rinsed most out, and left enough that I could feel the slip in my hair…followed up with Ojon butter and some Set It Free – I'm hooked. My curls are super defined, not crunchy, and smells great. I "heart" TT!

"Have any of you left in Totally Twisted with great results?!"

-No, but before, I've left in None of Your Frizziness and Hello Hydration on two separate occasions and my hair was too soft to the point it was coming out like crazy (I had to wash it out quickly), my sinuses were out of control from the scents and my skin broke out like no tomorrow!!! My eyes itch just thinking about Herbal Essences lol.

Your hair looks wonderful! What size perm rods did you use? It looks so natural!

I have both HH and TT, just purchased last week for the first time. I've used HH, Maybe I'll try TT this week. I think I must be doing something wrong with the leave-in part, though, because no matter how much or how little conditioner I leave in, my hair becomes a dried, tangled-up, inpenetrable mess. Shea butter just makes it oily.

My hair needs a little oil, a lot of moisture, and products that provide slip to the max. I was using Motions oil-free styling hairdress to provide moisture and mixing it with the shea butter, but several days ago I went to my favorite shopping place and picked up a jar of Long-Aid moisturizing activator gel for extra-dry hair. The next morning, I misted my hair and slapped several fistfuls of the stuff on my hair. For the first time in I don't remember when, my hair remained touchably soft and malleable the whole day. I've been using it ever since, and FINALLY my hair is soft like I like it. Now I just need to find that right balance between just enough and too much, so that my hair won't be so tacky when I touch it . . . :-).

Loving it! Your hair looks great no matter what you use, but I can tell that it looks more defined. You're my hair idol.

I use both HH and TT as leave-ins. I haven't decided which one I like better. Both of them smell great.

I did my very first twist and curly using TT as a leave in and although it was a slightly hot mess, I was able to rock a very cute puff!

I use TT for my wash and go's but I have yet to try and style with it. Maybe I will give it a shot with my TNC or just rubbing a bit thru after a wash like Mallorie mentioned. ~KF519

OMG..I just bought Totally Twisted. Now I can't wait to use it. I hope I get similar results s what I'm reading.

I use the TT as a styler. I mix it with the HH "None of Your Frizzness." I replaced my expensive conditioner with TT and NOYF and love what they do for my TWA and the price makes it that much more appealing.

  • E_v says:

I use it to weigh down my curl. I think it's the best leave in. I used Suave and HH as well but this just does something different. I make all my curly friends buy it too. It's the ultimate lol

  • GG says:

I love TT as a leave in. It leaves my hair (which I think is 3C/4A) soft, shiny and intoxicating. My all time favorite so far though is Aussie moist. My hair LOVES it. It's a tad bit creamier than TT.

I laughed when I read your post, 'cause every time I used TT my daughter practically stalked me around the house because of the fragrance. It's addictive just for the smell! It does set hair nicely.

Slightly off-topic, although my hair loves TT unfortunately my skin seems allergic to it. I'm discovering after trying the CG regimen that my scalp seems not to like heavy-duty 'cones like cyclopentasiloxane. Before CG I had terrible dandruff and eczema issues that I assumed were the result of over-oily scalp and stress issues. After following CG for a month, my scalp issues disappeared completely. I find that water-soluble 'cones are fine, but when using the others I again have itching and eczema breakouts. Not cool! I've started weeding out my facial products for 'cones as well. Any one else have/notice skin sensitivity to 'cones?

i like it for my twist outs (4A & 4B curls), i seal it in with my mix of shea butter & coconut oil. unfortunately im not a huge fan of the smell, it smells decent but i love the smell of coconut better so i prefer hello hydration. just stuck with this huge bottle till it runs out..lol
but i dont like it for a leave in if i wear my hair in a TWA fro, i havent found the right leave that leaves my fro moisturized think i need something creamy. :-/ anyone have any suggestions?

  • Anonymous says:

I use it as a wash and go leave in conditioner for my twa, which is a cross between 4A and 4B hair. After I wet my hair, I run about a quarter size amount through it and kind of rub it in. I can instantly feel my curls pop in my hands. My hair feels very soft the rest of the day. There is probably shrinkage, but my curls are pretty defined for the most part. I have not tested it to see how long the looks will last, as my hair always flattens when I sleep, no matter what I do. I love it, my hair reponds much better to it vs. HH.
