What’s in Your Shower?

What's in Your Shower?
My shower is full of products! It’s absolutely nuts…

Right now I have two half empty bottles of Herbal Essence Totally Twisted (I don’t know why I do that), a mostly empty family sized bottle of Herbal Essence Hello Hyrdation, a half empty bottle of Back 2 Basics Pom conditioner, a bottle of Generic Value The Detangler, an empty bottle of Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine, a half empty family sized bottle of DevaCare One, and a brown cap that doesn’t seem to belong to any of capless bottles in the shower (I take off the caps to make it easier on myself).

Ridic. The funny part is that I use all of them…not all at once, I just grab whatever is close! If you notice, I didn’t mention a shampoo. I haven’t poo’ed (lol, that would be bad) in a month…or henna’ed for that matter. I need to get on my game!

So ladies, what’s in your shower, and what do you recommend for slip, moisture, or styling?

My boyfriend said to me the other night, "Is it normal for girls to have like 20 shampoos in their bathrooms?" I've been experimenting. I tried out Pert–too much gunk. I want CLEAN hair, not "rejuvenated" hair, not "happy" hair, not "nourished" hair. JUST SQUEAKY CLEAN! I tried HH degunkify and it seems nice. I want their Totally Twisted now. Anybody know if HH stuff builds up in hair? I'm seeking a good, basic clean here, because my hair is wavy and just fine as it is, no assistance needed. I also tried Pantene, Aussie, Sunsilk and Suave–they don't feel like they clean my hair. Suave feels like it makes it dirtier. I want that super-clean feeling on my scalp and hair every single day, and I don't think clarifying is (for me) a once a month thing. So I look for products without conditioners in them. I have better luck with clear shampoos.

My shower currently has a 32 ounce bottle of Ouidad's Curl quencher conditioner, an 8 ounce bottle of Ouidad's Curl quencher shampoo that I use maybe once every two weeks to eliminate build up. A bottle of Herbal Essence's Hello Hydration and another of Total Twisted. A bottle of Garnier Fructis sleek and shine that I don't really use and my Ouidad Double Detangler comb.

To Anonymous 9/26/2009 1:12 AM: Thanks for the 411 Re: lye in conditioners. I just wanted to be careful, but now that I know better, I'm ready to try the HE Hydralicious. Maybe I'll pick up some when I go back to the store.

I have a Large bottle of Suave Coconut that's slippery on my hair. I also have some Trader Joe's Tea Tree shampoo and a nearly empty bottle of the matching Tea Tree conditioner; both for cleansing. I keep the good stuff that I deep condition with and leave in outside of the shower so it won't turn on me;)

  • Maria says:

My bathroom has a little window in the shower area and there are about 7 conditioners there. In the medicine cabinet I have a few items in there (my secret stash). Then there's the cabinet under the sink. Oh and the closet outside the bathroom bustin at the seems…. so yeah… LOL

    to Cygnet,

This is one of the most common misperceptions regarding product ingredients.

Sodium hydroxide is added to pH balance the product. A hair formulation should be slightly acidic (but only slightly!). At the optimum pH for hair, which I believe is between 6 and 7 i.e. a bit more acid than water, the cuticle is closed and cortex protected. If the pH environment is too high (alkaline) the cuticle will be opened and thus the inner cortex will be vulnerable to damage. If the pH anvironment is too low (acid) the cuticle can be degraded. If the cosmetic chemist comes up with a formulation that is a little too acid, a smidge of sodium hydroxide (an alkali) is added to neutralise the excess acid and therefore balance the PH. Conversely, you may have seen citric acid or other acids added to the ingredients near the bottom of other products. These acids would be doing a similar job, i.e. neutralising alkaline ingredient to get the right pH balance. So the sodium hydroxide is actually a good sign IMO because it shows the formulator has taken the trouble to pH balance the product. Not all products are PH balanced.

I have a half of bottle of Ojin thickening conditioner, a half of jar of Queen Helene Cholesteral Conditioner, a half of bar of a shampoo bar from KBB, a half of bottle of Suave coconut conditioner, a half of bottle of Oyin honey conditioner, and an almost but not quite full jar of Curl Junkie Habiscus and Banana Deep Fix conditioner, half bottle KK Knot Today and half bottle of HE TT conditioner.

  • WestEndGirl says:

I also end up with two half empty bottles of the same thing. I have done that with Tresemme Anti-Breakage conditioner. It has great slip and it's great for detangling.

Same goes for other Tresemme conditioners I have: Moisture Rich, Thermal Recovery, and Smooth & Silky.

Silk Elements MegaSilk Olive Moisturizing Treatment is great for moisture and detangling.

The Pantene Time Renewal mask and Relaxed & Natural mask are have good slip also.

In my shower I have Redken Real Control shampoo, Nexxus Therappe shampoo, Mizani Phormula 7 shampoo, Tresemme conditioner, and VO5 condtioner.

Of course in my bathroom closet and in my bedroom I have many more products…….

  • Patrice-The Soap Seduction says:

I have all half empty bottles of Dr Bronner's Castille Peppermint soap, Kinky Curly shampoo, SunSilk something or another conditioner, Suave Coconut conditioner, and countless bars of my own soap..

  • sweetdrk1 says:

LOL, I love this post! Let's see a drop of Cantu Shea butter conditioner and half a bottle of shampoo. Alba daily shampoo, Alba Mango moisturizing conditioner, Alba leave in conditioner, half empty Knot Today…uhm oh HE TT conditioner (tryng this for the first time) LOL! no wonder honey keep fussing about me buying so many products. I have to find a better hiding space!!

    Keep it Curly!!

  • Taryn Hardnett says:

Giovanni Direct Leave-in, Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose, Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat Shampoo and Conditioner, and Herbal Essences Hello Hydration (which is only used when I rinse out henna, I'm a Giovanni girl all the way) 😀

  • Cygnet says:

On the edge of my bathtub: An almost-empty bottle of HE HH and an almost full bottle of Garnier Fructis Moistureworks Fortifying Shampoo, which I save for the days I do henna. On the bathroom counter: An almost-empty jar of Long Aid Gel Activator for extra-dry hair, with more of the same scooped into another jar. There's an almost-empty bottle of BRX Sheen spray, there's one spray bottle containing the remainder of a 1 to 3 ratio of BRX and water, and there's another spray bottle containing a ratio of equal parts water, BRX, and HE HH. In my room where I watch TV is a nearly-new bottle of Sta-Sof-Fro that I bought in place of a new bottle of BRX because Wally-World didn't have it that day. I'll be using it just like I use the BRX now. And on today's trip to Wally-World I picked up Suave Tropical Coconut conditioner and the last two bottles they had of Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Leave-in conditioner.

I almost bought one of the HE Hydralicious conditioners. It has good things in it, like shea extract and aloe, and it has Nikki's beloved behentrimonium stuff. Unfortunately, it also contains sodium hydroxide, which is code for lye. I'm sure it's only a very small amount, but after much searching of my own, I still haven't figured out why lye is added to some conditioners. If anyone knows, please enlighten me.

  • Anonymous says:

I do not like to keep the products in my shower, but in the bathroom. I have a small amount of jessicurl weekly treatment on the shelf. 3/4 of a bottle of Global Goddess Oil, almost full family sized HH Tottally Twisted, half a bottle of Giovanni 50/50 Shampoo (i lent out my tea tree to a friend for a test or else it would be there), and the last squeeze of a family sized bottle of HH Hello Hydration. Coming Attractions: Hair One for Dry Hair from Sally's and Oyin honey hemp conditioner these are my recent purchases that will make it to the bathroom by Sunday.

  • Anonymous says:

I have an almost finished bottle of HE Hello Hydration conditioner, a new small bottle of HE TT conditioner, an almost finished bottle of Dr. Bronner's Spearmint Skikakai soap (use once a week) and a large toothed comb in my shower. • Pat says:

I hate half full bottles of the same conditioner hanging around, so I always drain one into the other with the help of a funnel :).

  • Anonymous says:

What's with all the drug adverts? LOL

  • Anonymous says:

My shower is pretty uncluttered but it's small so maybe that's why. lol I have a bottle of Herbal Essence Totally Twisted Conditioner, a bottle of Blended Beauty Cleansing Conditioner and BB Styling Lotion. That's it! (Now ask me about my linen closet! That's where all of my hair products are!) lol 🙂 ~KF519

  • KeetaRay says:

I love Herbal Essence Hello Hydration and even though it gives pretty good slip, I take the cap off and add about 2 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil and shake it up. It gives my hair extra moisture and even more slip. I also have Mixed Chicks shampoo, Herbal Essence Totally Twisted, my wide-tooth comb, and Suave Tropical Coconut Conditioner. Not TOO much in there 😉

  • Ishea says:

It's pretty simple – 1 almost empty bottle of Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut conditioner and 1 huge bottle of Aussie Moist conditioner…topped off with my Jilbere shower comb.

  • Brenda says:

Bedani Black Cocoa Butter Shampoo, Dr. Bronner's Shikakai Soap, La Bomba (Dominican Deep Conditioner, and Jason Sea Kelp Conditioner.

I found it using the Topics pull-down on the far right. HTH 🙂

  • Shelly says:

I am proud to say that I only have one "hair" related item in my shower. Aussie Moist conditioner (family size). I finished off my Herbal Essence HH this morning. Now if you asked how many "body" related items in my shower, I would have a longer response.

Nikki, do you realize that everytime you mention Poo'ing in your post you LOL. That's so cute.

I'm so glad you brought this topic up!! I cowashed my hair last night and thought to myself, "all these half empty bottles and hair stuff is ridiculous!!" I currently have an almost empty bottle of Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine, and empty bottle of Suave Coconut conditioner, a new bottle of Suave Vanilla conditioner that I decided to try. Along with those I have Herbal Essences Hello Hydration (family size) and almost empty Totally Twisted. I also have Helly Hydration shampoo and Giovanni Tea Tree shampoo but both of those bottles are nearly full since I haven't "poo'd either in about a month.
I also recently have added to my shower collection, Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship thanks to Koos blog which I found through your site CN. I used it late last night as my leave in after I cowashed with my new bottle of Suave Vanilla and Hello Hydration and deep conditioned with Hask Henna 'N Placenta (also a new product I tried for the first time). I am not yet sure how it worked on my hair b/c when I woke up this morning my plaits of course weren't dry yet so I had to wig it today.

So that's what's in my shower. If you thought that was alot, you should see all the products under my sink!!! I am truely a PJ (product junkie!!!) LOL 🙂

p.s. – Thank you for this site, it is awesome!!! Keep up the GREAT work!!

I have a small bottle of HH Totally Twisted conditioner, a big bottle of HH TT conditioner, a bottle of DevaCurl conditioner, Suave conditioner, Silicon Shampoo, Silicon Deep Conditioner, and HH TT shampoo. Wow! I didn't really notice how many until I made this list.

I have a random question that doesn't completely fit here, LOL. I have a lot of henna questions, do you know where I can find info about it?
