Brianna– A Story of Transition

By January 27th, 202136 Comments
Meet Brianna…newly natural, and wise beyond her 16 years!

Brianna-- A Story of Transition
CN: Were you a long term or short term transitioner, and why?

I was a short term transitioner for the simple fact that I was tired of dealing with my relaxed hair. I wanted to meet the real me once and for all. I also wanted to chop before my 16th birthday.

CN: When did you BC? What was your initial reaction to your natural hair?
I Big Chopped on November 20, 2009. In the video I posted, you can see that I really liked it. Since the video, I have become much more enthusiastic about my hair and for the first time in like forever, I feel GREAT about my hair, and myself.

CN: How did family and friends react to the new you? What was your response to them?
I haven’t seen all of my family yet. It’s only been 4 days since my BC but, my mother and grandma like it a lot. In the beginning, they weren’t very supportive because they felt that I was just going through a phase and that I would regret the decision. They also didn’t think I would be able to cut it myself, but afterward, they continuously complimented me, lol. When I told my friends I was going to chop, they looked at me funny and didn’t have much to say. But, I didn’t let that phase me. I was going to do what I thought was right for me, and what would make ME happy. Me cutting my hair to about an inch long was my response to my friends doubtful looks and to my family, I thanked them for the nice compliments.

CN: What was your transition routine?
Well, I only transitioned for 2 months so, not much of a routine at all, lol. I just co-washed about 3 times a week, and would clip my hair up in a bear claw clip. It was HIDEOUS. Trust me, lol.

CN: Why did you choose to go natural?
I chose to go natural because, I wanted to see what the hair growing out of my scalp, unaltered, looked like. I chose to go natural because I would see people on the internet with their natural hair and they looked like they had this great secret to unrivaled beauty and confidence. I chose to go natural to continue the limit of unnecessary chemicals in my life. I chose to go natural so I wouldn’t have to sit in the salon all day and night! I chose to go natural because, natural is me (:

First Photo: Relaxed hair on a previous 6 month stretch. Looking CRAZYYY!

You look good with short hair!

  • Rebecca V. O'Neal says:

I did my big chop when I was 15 too! It's been almost 8 years since and I'm sooooooo glad I did it when I did…. though the online community and support system was pretty much non-existent back then.

    You go girl!

  • curley.churley says:

wot a perfect age to start! I wish i had known back then- well i was (a natural) through out boarding school but when i got out at 16! i thought it was my time to shine and got a perm 🙁 brilliant! I'm 26 this december and all i have is 8" of hair which is not bad, but u see, it could be lot longa! hehe no worries darling, u look lovely and u are well articulated- cheers to a great adventure! 🙂

I'm 16 too, and I have a lot of respect for you right now. It can be so much harder to do this now because a lot of people around our age are so ignorant and immature about short hair.

  • Brianna says:

Thanks to everyone for everything! The words that you guys are giving are very uplifting & they reassure me that even though my friends think that I'm baldheaded & have nappy hair lol, my hair is beautiful. It's always the people with chewed up hair talking mess & trying to give advice lol. Once again, thank you sooo much! The Curly Nikki community is awesomeee. I'm also a member of Naturally Curly & the Long Hair Care Forum.

Congratulations! I am sooo proud of you..15? wow, believe me, you will be so happy you went natural young! I wish I had, every time I get frustrated with my hair I think, if I had done this when I first wanted to (22) I would have hair to my butt by now.lol Anyway enjoy every phase, twa, mid, long, super long and research research research. See what works for you and stick with it. A sulfate free shampoo and a cones free condish are all you need to start, like Vo5 moisture milks or bedhead moisture maniac and a little shae butter will get you a long long way. Good luck and enjoy your beautiful hair. Great job on the BC
    by the way:-)-curlmebella

i smiled thru the entire video. you are beautiful. and a total bad a**! oops, should probably keep it to PG-13 language. 😉 seriously, just splendid! may sound strange coming from a stranger, but i'm so proud you.

  • Traveljunkie08 says:

Brianna, you deserve a standing ovation! I BARELY had the courage to do my BC and I'm in my 30s. So the fact that you have the courage and confidence to do it as a teenager is…awesome. I have no doubt that you will inspire and encourage other young women. And grown women too. 🙂

    You look beautiful!

"GO BRIANNA" You are rockin' that hair. Keep it up. So young yet so wise. You know now what a lot of us took a lot of pain and suffering to get to. Own your look!

  • LBell says:

Brianna, I'm old enough to be your mother so this may sound corny coming from me but I have MAD respect for teenage women like you who go (back to) natural. When I think about the kind of imagery your generation gets bombarded with…and then when I remember what it was like to be a teenager PERIOD, with peer pressure and all…it amazes me that ANY young sister would BC. Whatever you do from here on out, rock your hair in all its glory. Thanks for sharing your story with us!

  • Anonymous says:

  • curlyq145 says:

Congrats and your hair is GORGEOUS!!!

  • Brianna says:

Hey, this is Brianna. Thanks so much you guys! Also, a BIG thanks to Ms.Nikki (CN), I'm really so excited to be featured & I really appreciate the kind comments from everyone. I hope that others can learn from me that, if I, who's still going through the "dreaded highschool years" can do it, so can you (: . I'm so happy with my decision & I'm about 99% sure that anyone else that is toying with idea of the BC will be too. Happy Hair Growing! Happy Thanksgiving!

  • Chrissy says:

You look great! Your hair texture is so pretty. Maybe your video can inspire other young girls to go natural.

  • artgyrl says:

Wow, that's awesome and very encouraging. I did cut my hair myself with a pair of scissors, but I had a few inches of hair. Her hair looks very cute. 🙂

  • Anonymous says:

You look great with your natural hair! You were beautiful before but WOW how your face shines with your new do. Hold your head up high and ignore those who want to tell you how to look.

  • Milan says:

Congrats! You look great. I luv the confidence that you have to be so young. I wouldn't have been confident back then to go natural so you go missy!

I always support my young sisters like myself! You are gorgeous. And even smarter than me! I did mine earlier this year (in June) at 17, so we still look alot alike, heh.
I'm never turning back, and the big sisters here @ CurlyNikki and other blogs give me the strength to keep going.

  • Kiana says:

Omg! Finally a story on someone that's my age 🙂
You are so brave! I absolutely loveeee it. Don't let anyone tell you different; having healthy hair is the ultimate goal- remember that.
