Ecostyler Gel vs. Kinky Curly Curling Custard

By January 27th, 202149 Comments
Watch as Kimmaytube compares Ecostyler Gel to Kinky Curly Curling Custard. The price points are starkly different… are the results?

Have you tried Ecostyler? Did it provide hold and definition? If you’ve tried KCCC, how did it compare?

I agree with the last anonymous posting. I have used both and everytime I use the Eco Styler gel, with ANY leave in, I get white hair. I never want to use gel without having a leave in under it, so because of this Eco Styler doesn't work for me. I really wanted it to work too, since it is much cheaper than the KCCC. At the same time, I get consistent results with the KCCC, so it's much easier IMO to pay a little more and know what I'm getting, than to keep trying Eco with different leave-ins and ending up with the same white hair.

I hate eco gel. I never was able to figure out what kind of leave in to use under it. Every time my wash n go dries wit the eco my hair looks like it has a gray film over it. I dont like all this trial and error tryin to make a cheap product work. I love the kccc cause there is no guessing. I use the kc products the way the company suggests and I get perfect results everytime. No figuring out what leave in to use or any of that filmy mess. Kccc is worth it imo. I prefer quality over quantity.

You can purchase Eco Styler Gel w/Olive Oil at Shoppers Food Warehouse…Good Luck!

I know I'm late on this but I tried the eco styler gel (clear, olive oil, and the one in the black jar) none of them worked the way kinky curly did for me. I just tried the eco styler argan oil and I actually like it. It is as close to kinky curly and it's texture is looser than the other gels in it's line. I don't have to stress about adding anything else to it to get it to work.

Thank you ladies for all of the information provided. I've been transitioning for almost 6 months and I've decided to big chop…Yayyy! I'm going at the end of the week and this post helped me decide on what product I'll have on hand for my first wash n go. Based on the blog and a few others I'm going to try my luck with the Eco Styler Gel and I'm gonna pick up Giovanni Leave in conditioner as well. I'm not too sure about Kinky Curly based on one of my good friends. She applied it to her hair and I could not stop staring at the white goo it left in her hair. It also took a while to dry and we were in JAMAICA! *kanye shrugs* This entire process is trial and error based on your hair type, product combination, weather and usage. Either way I'm ready to embarked on the rest of my naturally kinky/curly/coily journey.

    =) Peace Ladies!

I just did the BC, kinda, this weekend. I went to someone who blow dried my hair before cutting it. (odd) And because I didn't have much time to play with products before work, I actually had her to flat iron it. BTW, I transitioned for 6 months. So I haven't worn it curly yet….and I'm scared. What to do, what to do? I'm afraid I'll still have some straight ends when I co-wash this weekend. Should I co-wash, deep condition, try to Eco gel and see that I am working with as far as curls, then snip straight ends myself. Help me. Thanks. Rissa.

I've tried KC, but it dries like glue with whitish residue… Plus it's way to sticky…. I was told that could find ESG @ Walgreens , so far I've searched @ least 4 to no avail… if anyone knows of any other distributors please post the info… Thx From: Just Being Me…

I LOVE KCCC. I almost gave up on my natural journey because my hair would not curl. My hair was dry and gross. With the KCCC products it has come alive. I don't mind paying the price, I spent that much on perms and everything else. I am sure it evens out anyway. It may be hair type or texture that makes it work or not work.

  • Anonymous says:

I have used KCCC and didn't particularly care for it. The conditioner did not detangle my 4b hair very well. Plus the custard felt greasy and it took FOREVER to dry. I just tried the ECO Styler with Argan Oil. We'll see how it goes. I do twists or like ringlets and let them dry or use diffuser. It was very think and rich. I do spray a leave-in or comb out/moisturizing spray before I use gel anyway. I find gel rather than cream makes my twists/spirals hold longer. Now in the summer I have to be careful of dryness.

  • Sonya says:

I forgot to clarify which product. The Eco Styler Olive Oil gel is the product to which I am referring in the previous post. I have not tried KCCC yet because of the cost. It's something like 5 or 6 times the cost of Eco Styler for the same oz. container.

  • Sonya says:

This is my staple product! Thanks to all the natural hair blogs and forums, I found this wonderful gel. It makes the curls of my TWA shine and pop. I only apply it on wet hair. It dries quickly and leaves my hair shiny. The hold varies from soft to strong depending on how much product you apply. But, the olive oil ingredient keeps my hair soft and moisturized underneath the hold.

I'm16 and have been natual for 6 monthes after my third big chop.Eco works great when your trying to hold proctive styles like twists and bantus. Its cheap and easy to find. I have not relly reseached the products make-up, but the good lasting hold and adds shine is worth it in my book. But to keep it from gaining "the crunch" I add some shea butter and tea tree oil after most of my stlyes are done.

What kind of aloe vera gel?

  • Editor says:

Haven't tried Eco styler yet but after reading all the ingredients that are toxic and unhealthy, I think I'll pass.

  • Anonymous says:

I mix the ECO Styler, Aloe Vera Gel, & Olive Oil applied to wet hair to define my curls.

  • Anonymous says:

Derriah- we're the same lmao im also 15 and i have natural hair. but i dont wear it natural because its to much. im looking for a gel that can help give me long half loose curls. i dont want extreme curls. im shelly btw

  • ~Smileygirl~ says:

i have eco and kinky curly. I liked the eco gel but always found the crunch to get slightly annoying. My mom had been using some kinky curly products, and after i suggested them to her for me after watching kimmay"s vid, she agreed. i bought the knot today and the custard. together they work great in my hair. i can use the knot today in other leave ins while kinky curly custard makes my hair clot when used with other products. Also, i purchased a bottle of pure aloe gel from Wal-mart and when i put it on my wet hair I have similar results to kinky curly on SOME parts of my hair, because i have combonation hair. but this helps me save some of my kinky curly.

The ecostyler with olive oil has the same ingredients, but some added ones but its still unhealthy.

  • Lena says:

I love KCCC, its perfect for me, but I hate the price. The eco styler is so cheap because it has terrible and harmful ingredients. Everything it has is unhealthy, and yes, so as the glycerin that IT contains. The ecostyler also has a carcinogen, Triethanolamine or TEA.

    Ingredients for clear ecostyler:
Water , Carbomer , Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein , PVP , Glycerin , Triethanolamine , Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate , Polysorbate 20 , Tetrasodium EDTA , Fragrance , Love and Pride

I would never put that in my hair!

ok so I just got hip to the gylcerin & water to help my hair retain moisture… IT'S A BRAND NEW DAY , LET ME TELL YOU !! My hair was dry as hay before this, not it's so soft and touchable. I have type 4 hair, it takes a lot of work to see a curl definition and when I do I am so happy. Now that I have achieved softness & moisture I'm working on the curl part… Is it goo to apply either the Eco Styler or the KCCC over the glycerin /water hair for the twist or coils to get a nice curl ?

  • Cicely J says:

I have used both and I must say it deoends on the weather and moisture in the air. Kinky Curly Curling Custard can be sticky at times. I notice when it is moist outside it is not as sticky or if I apply it to my hair when it is drenching wet and not just damp.
However, Ecostyler Olive Oil Gel can be used on wet or dry hair. I find it works better if I apply a hair lotion or leave in conditiober first so it does not dry and make my curls hard. Its all trial and error. I have been natural over 10 years and have used everything. Because of the huge price difference Ecostyler is something I can use everyday. KCCC is saved for those special occasions.

i love eco olive oil gel i have used kccc also but i dont like the stickyness and drying time and it isnt as versitile as i would like.i am a natural stylist, they work great on locs and twists, kccc dosnt do as well on rollersets as i hoped, plus it is so expensive for what i need it to do, 1/50 clients liked kccc, but the ecostyler dosnt flake and dries shiny. moisturizing oil and ecostyler work well together as well as conditoner.with kccc just conditoner the oil breaks it down funny.for the driness left by eco gel try sproil by jamaican mango and lime after hair is dried.

  • Derriah (Dur-Rye-uh) says:

Hi im 15 and i have never wore my hair out naturally curly because when i. wash it it gets extremely hard after 1 hr. I don't want to have to take a bottle of water and pore it on my hair when it gets dry(my mom suggested that). I can admit i am a lil afraid of wearing my hair natural to school just b/c there are some girls that have perms to make their hair straight and wish they had my hair. I just want some advice on what i could do to keep my hair moist. and bouncy all day. Im tired of straighting my hair and combing my curls out and wearing a puffy ponytail all the time. I know straighting it isn't good for my hair.

Love this video & kimmaytube. I think IC Fantasia gel is nice.

Eco Styler does not work well for my 3b/3C hair …left my loose curls almost straight….

However I do love Kimmay's channel…The hair tips, the fashion shows!! Awesome

  • Lion-ess says:

I'm a huge fan of Kimmaytube videos.

  • ChrLvsBks says:

I have only had KCCC applied to my hair once by a stylist. My hair was elongated but I did not like the feel of the KCCC when I wet my hair to reactivate the product.

I love using Eco Styler clear with max hold. I use a heavy leave in under it. If it dries crunchy, I SOTC with a moisturizer, and I am good to go.

  • Anonymous says:

I love both of them but the curl definition is different. EcoStyler give my 4a's tighter curls and KCCC give me looser curls. Both keep my wash-n-go's curly for a week. Both make my hair crunchy when it first dries, but afer applying my Cantu Leave-In or Veg Glycerin/water combo, it feels just as hydrated. I do like Eco for twist outs and slicking down the front of my hair like nobody's business. Plus, you can't beat Eco's price.

Hummm… Not a fan of Ecostyler. It's good if you restyle every few days but I don't touch my hair for a week and it just can't live up to the task. I've used the olive oil and the clear. They are both pretty thick and dry VERY hard. If I try to scrunch out the crunch, flakes galore followed by loss of definition.
KCCC is exspensive but it's a soft hold gel. If you apply too much and need to SOTC (and even then the hardness is nothing compared to EcoStyler) there are no flakes. A jar lasts me 3 months and I can easily go a week with out having to restyle. Also, read the ingredients. Everything in KCCC is natural and available @ you local health food store. In theory you could make your own (I'm lazy, I'd rather just buy it). Read the ingredients on a jar of EcoStyler. It contains Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate (a questionable synthetic preservative that is a skin and eye irritant). And if you tried to make it where would you buy ingredients like polyvinylpyrrolidone (aka; PVP) and why would I want this in my hair for long periods of time anyway? I'm just saying…

  • Skeeta says:

sorry for all the typos btw. ;o)

  • Skeeta says:

I mix a little worlds of curls activator gel with my clear eco gel. It is the *secret* to keeping the hair super soft and moist all day! No hardness, no crunch. I do use a condish b4 the gel but mixing eco with activator gel is the bizness! Im sure any activator gel would work. Just don't use to much activator gel cause ur hair will be too greasy or gummy. PS- I Watched this vid on teh eco/kcc comparison the other day and it was VERY good cause she did a side by side comparison.

I thought I was the only one privy to EcoStyler! I've been lovin' up that gel since my college days… I've tried to "divorce" it many times but we keep getting back together 🙂

  • curlmixtress says:

LBell, I've noticed that I can't use oils with ecostyler if I want my twist outs to last a few days. The conditioner I leave in underneath usually doesn't have any oil in it. When I used oil, I had bouncy beautiful curls… that lasted one day.

  • msjayeparker says:

I truly love Eco styler with olive oil! I did a co wash today with vitamin conditioner and applied the gel to my hair. It is still drying but I love how it is turning out! I have not tried KCCC products because of the price but, hopefully one day I will. I say two thumbs up for ECO-STYLER!!

  • LBell says:

To date I've used Eco Styler Krystal twice and KCCC once, both on twists that I took out the next day for a twistout. I have approximately 8" of 4b/CNapp hair.

KCCC surprised the heck out of me: Even though I used it pretty sparingly (at least it seemed that way), it provided hard-core hold and no crunch. Eco Styler held well too but the hair felt a little dry. In both cases I used my heavy leave-in (which is basically conditioner with some oils added) prior to applying. KCCC's hold lasted almost the entire week; Eco's wasn't quite as long. I didn't get flakes in either case, maybe because I let my leave-in soak in (about 2 hours) before applying.

I alternate between air-drying in twists and blow-drying; by the time I run out of this KCCC sample I should have saved enough money to buy a jar of my own, which I will probably do.

I LUV Kimmaytube. Please tell me you got permission to post her video, she made a video a couple of months ago about people posting her videos on their blogs without asking. I've used KCCC and ecostyler and the KCCC takes days to dry thankfully I'm not concerned with defining curls anymore just healthy hair.

  • Gigi says:

I love em both for different reasons.

Eco Styler wins with price and hold

    KCCC wins with curl definition

  • Anonymous says:

I love using ecostyler (krystal) with a leave-in product underneath. I NEVER put gel on my hair without some leave-in conditioner to protect it first. Whenever I have done this with KCCC, I always get flakes unless I use their leave -in product first (Knot Today). This drives me crazy. I have tried all types of leave-ins under ecostyler and I never get flakes or crunchiness. Love this stuff!!

  • miz b says:

I'm using the EcoStyler and I love it! I agree with curlmixtress-use a conditioner before then add ES. I've had great success with my twistouts. If I can get a sample of the KCCC then I wouldn't mind trying it. Does anyone know how healthy the EcoStyler is for our curls though?

  • Shannycia says:

I love this! I must be doing something wrong bc whenever I use EcoStyler gel (the clear or the olive oil) to slick down my edges it flakes ridiculously.

  • KeetaRay says:

I use the clear "max hold" EcoStyler gel and love it for wash-and-go's. I also have KCCC but for me it is so sticky and dries crunchy. I have more softness with the ES gel.

  • Anonymous says:

I use the EcoStyler Krystal gel on a regular basis. It is very versatile and works well with other products. I use it for wash and go style's (I usually apply Giovanni Direct Leave In or Paul Mitchell's The Conditioner underneath. I also use Hawaiian Silky 14 n 1 conditioner). I usually just finger comb the product through and my curls really pop. EcoStyler is also good for ponytails, buns, afro puffs, slicking down edges and it does not leave the hair crunchy or flake. I can usually use it everyday for about five days on dry hair before having to wash it out. Also, I recently started mixing it with shea butter and grapeseed oil to use for twists/braids. It makes my twistouts/braidouts lovely, defined and shiny with no hardness or buildup and I don't have to retwist or rebraid so often.

  • mothereartha says:

i love eco krystal! mix it w/ leave in and long aid to moisturize and soften the hold! thanks ladies of naturallycurly for that mix.

  • NewRibena says:

I was able to achieve great curl and definition with both products BUT the Ecostyler gel dried so crunchy. I have yet to figure out what to put under it to not get the crunchy effect (so far most combinations have led to the dreaded white balls – yuck). The Ecosytler also dried quicker but I still prefer the KCCC for the softness.

  • curlmixtress says:

I love kimmay's videos. I've used ecostyler gel with great success. Here's the trick. You have to use a creamy conditioner FIRST, then apply the ecostyler. This sets your twist outs, bantu knots, rollers, etc. beautifully. I apply conditioner, then ecostyler gel to each section… I can get 5 day twist n curls using this method.

  • Rica Danie says:

I love my EcoStyler Olive Oil Gel. I get the most compliments on my hair when I Co-wash with my Hello Hydration or Totally Twisted and smooth it over with a medium amout of the ESOOG. Sometimes I brush it through with my psuedo-denman and other times I use my bristle brush to smooth back the front for a very curl and shiny puff.
