Interview with Tracie Thoms
I get tons of emails from you divas with requests to interview particular curly singers and actresses… I do the best that I can… seeking out the curly beauties and humbly asking them for a slot in their busy schedules. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t 😉

In the coming weeks, I’ll be chatting with the beautiful and (of course) curly Traci Nicole Thoms and like with Judith Hill, I want to get your input!

Traci Thoms is a stage and television actress best known for her roles in Rent, Cold Case, and The Devil Wears Prada. I’ve seen her hair in gorgeous twists, wash-n-go’s, and what appears to be rod sets.

So my lovely curlies, I’m asking you to help me structure the interview. What questions would you like answered?!

Leave your suggestions in the comments below!

lol shout out to Lugo's in Brooklyn, i used to get my hair for braiding from there. Very expensive but great quality hair that u can reuse.

  • Lilith_Eve says:

What an awesome interview! And I really appreciate you asking her about being cast in Death Proof 🙂

Great interview; did not know she was a fellow Howard alum (go Bison!). She looks great in those pics…crazy that they can't get any natural stylists on set for her…you'd think that wouldn't be a big deal.

  • Baiana says:

Oh, and Tracie's amazing! Great interview! (I meant to write that in my previous post. sorry!)

  • Baiana says:

what's the proper way to suggest a celeb interview? I haven't seen any interviews with choreographer/dancer Luam. Her youtube choreo videos are crazy! Her story's inspiring, but I don't think anyone's talked to her about her hair (which is natural, curly, and amazing! It flies all over the place when she dances!) Please interview her!

  • savvybrown says:

Does she ever have problems with stylists trying to make her hair "do" something that isn't natural, comfortable or "her"? Since stylists have to have their hands in her hair so often, when she is off set, how does she wear her hair? What does she do to prevent breakage, knots and split ends?

  • FABianna says:

what shampoo / conditioner/ deep conditioner does she use?

How often does she was her hair?

what type of leave-in does she use if any? what products does she use to style/ moisturize?

if she does wash n goes what products does she use?

how did she maintain moisture w/ her hair dye?

    how often does she trim?

How long has she been natural?

other questions also regarding her hair and how it affects her in Hollywood?

  • Crimson Butterfly says:

Yes, she was in Death Proof…I love that movie !

Traci has some bad Assssssssssss tresses, just like her role in Death Proof.

What texture of hair does Traci have, I'm asking this question to everyone as I search for products and tips to keeping my own mane natural and healthy.

  • EmberRose says:

A lot of people covered my questions.

I just want her to know she was amazing in Rent and that movie changed my life.

  • Karyn says:

I LOVE her and her hair. She was awesome in Death Proof 😀

  • RefurbishedLover says:

Hey! I am loving her hair! I am curious to know what made her decide to color her hair and what brand of color does she use. Also, how does she take care of her highlighted hair and avoid damage. I know that as naturals we are very cautious about the chemicals we put in our hair and I would love to hear from someone who has had a good experience with color treated hair. Thank you and I can't wait for the interview.

  • Nubian Actress says:

    OMG I love Tracy!!!!!

    ok….

Is natural hair more acceptable in Theater or in Hollywood?
also Do you find that it is becoming more acceptable to wear your hair natural as time goes on or have things not changed much at all?

this might have been asked already but have you ever felt the pressure to straighten your hair just to see how "cast-able" (is that even a word?) you are?

  • Lilith_Eve says:

I was wondering if she felt she had an edge being natural in being cast in Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof. I ask because he always seems to know exactly what he's looking for when he casts.

  • Yoli says:

I wonder if she feels that she is type-cased (maybe overlooked for "sexy" roles). If so, does she think her hair has something to do with it?

Has having her hair natural opened any professional or personal doors?

How does she feel being one of the few natural beauties in public eye via hollywood? Does she resent the status, or embrace it?

  • Traci says:

Wow, I'm so excited about this interview. In fact I was one of the many who emailed and requested her, so great follow through. She is proof of the versatility of natural hair. I am super curious of her products and her hair regimen. Thanks!

  • robinlouise says:

How does she maintain her color? Has she always been natural? I ADORE her! I'm so excited to read your interview of a sister Howard alum!

I noticed that she was one of the few naturals in the movie "Good Hair". I would like to know what she thought about the natural's portrayal in the movie. Does she think he should've focused on natural hair more?

  • Unknown says:

I love her work. Does anyone else remember her as Mahandra on Wonderfalls? That was WAY before any of the other acting gigs.

  • curlyq145 says:

What is her routine for her wash and gos?
Does she ever get rejected for roles because of her hair?

  • Anonymous says:

I LOVE her! I'd love to know what she thought of Chris Rock's documentary, Good Hair.

She was one of very few women with natural hair in the documentary…and I would be interested to know if she thought it was an accurate representation of the black hair community and how he approached her for the film.

    Thanks Nikki! You rock.

  • Stacye says:

    Hi Nikki,

What are her experiences on set dealing with hair professionals who are not privy on how to handle natural hair? I.e., who does her hair for shows/movies? What she has to do to her hair before going to set? Or if she just ask to do her hair herself.

Also, she has been natural for a while, what what I can recall. What were execs. reactions to her look before 'natural' hairstyles became excepted. Or are they really excepted in hollywood now?

  • Anonymous says:

Does she wear extensions for her style or is that all her natural hair twisted?

  • Anonymous says:

Her styles look great! I'm excited that you're going to get to interview her. Be sure to ask if it's all her real hair or if she adds kinky twists extensions from time to time. There's been some debate about that. She can settle it once and for all.

  • lexibugg says:

you guys forgot that she was also in Quentin Tarantino's Grind House, it was a double feature, i think the one she was in was called death proof or something like that!!! her hair was cute there, as well. i didn't have a question, though.

  • Anonymous says:

I would like to know if she ever adds hair in. I noticed she was one of the women in the Chris Rock movie.

  • Unknown says:

How does she maintain her twists and rod sets? They're both gorgeous!!

  • Shay says:

Traci is an amazing actress, I too loved her in the musical RENT. I'd like to know if she is still doing Broadway, and if she has ever been looked over for a role due to her natural hair.

  • Unknown says:

A lot of great questions have been asked. I am looking forward to this interview. Flipping through channels one day I stopped on Cold Case because of her hair – now I love the show and still loving her hair. I loved her in Rent to, she is the only character that stood out to me.

  • mslizzia says:

    Here are my questions…

What does she use to define her curls?
What is her regime for defining her curls?
Does she do her own hair?

  • Anonymous says:

I am so glad to see that you are interviewing Traci as well!! I loved her in Rent and I was infatuated with her hair ever since!

I would like to know some of her favorite styles (I think this may have been asked already)?

Did she decide to go natural to stand out in the acting business? I think a lot of AA actresses say most people in the business tend to overlook them.

Are her friends and family members natural? If not, what is their perception of her hair?

How does she take care of her hair differently due to the color that she has on her hair?

  • Anonymous says:

does she usually arrive on set with her hair already styled (do it on her own?) if not, how has her experiences been with having other people style her hair? what is the strangest request/weirdest experience she's had in the industry (in relation to her hair)?

  • sewdope says:

i'm so happy that you are interviewing traci! i love her hair and her acting! 🙂

  • NaturalMane says:

I am glad you are interviewing Traci. I am a big fan of her work on Cold Case and I love the comment she made in her interview in the movie 'Good Hair'. She stated that its funny that because she has decided to wear her hair in the natural state that it grows from her head that she is thought of as the one being revolutionary (as opposed to people who chemically alter their hair being considered normal)…Some kind of way I would love for you to work into the interview that was the best statement any of the actresses in that movie made (in my opinion)…Okay but on to my questions:

On Cold Case she wears her hair in micro 2 strand twist, I would like to know how often she gets her hair re-twisted? How does she maintain her hair during this period (i.e. wash or just clean scalp, etc.)?

  • Beads, Braids & Beyond says:

Excited for this interview! I love love love her twists.

  • Anonymous says:

Wow!! Okay I didn't recognize that she is the young lady from Devil Wears Prada. She is gorgeous!! Not trying to be snarky (can't believe I used that word), but they totally downplayed her beauty in that movie so the lead would shine. The other ladies covered my questions, but I do want to know if she has ever felt any pressure to permanently straighten her hair for a role.

  • sunbaby says:

What protective style(s) does she prefer?
What made her decide to go natural?
Did she ever relax and then, transition? If so, how long?
Did she ever wear a TWA?

Thanks CurlyNikki. I have always admired Tracie and the fact that she is a Howard U alum!

  • KayC, The Quiet Storm says:

What is her normal hair routine?
    What products does she love?
What is her favorite style/routine if she is doing her own hair?

Does she feel her natural hair hinders her from getting roles?
Is she asked to straighten while shooting various projects?
Was that a bantu knot-out in 'Devil Wears Prada?'
