Joy tried a Braid-n-Curl and wants to share her results with the CN community! Check her out:
I washed my hair with shampoo for damaged hair, and conditioned my hair with Dove Go Fresh Cucumber Conditioner on the day before. I then oiled my scalp w/ coconut oil, added a creme moisturizer to my hair (focusing on the ends), then applied Garnier Fructis Brilliantine Shine Wax to each section of hair. Finally, I braided, and curled almost all the way to the root with purple perm rods (I ended up with 11 braids). I slept with a satin cap, unraveled today in the evening, came out so beautifully!
@ Bitty Boss, Thanks girl =)
I'm late as well with my response but I think the hairstyle is cute. As for everyone here talking about race/ethnicity, I think that those of you who are sitting here saying that her ethnic background and how it has either nothing to do with her hair or that it is ignorant that to be looking at her hair and making assumption about her hair, are either lying to themselves or being delusional about how she would be perceived based on her skill color. Of course people will make comments about her skin color based on how she described herself. With all honesty, it baffles me that when you ask people in this country to tell you what their ethnic background is, they reply by answering with nationalities and is some cases religious groups. Last time I checked, a nationality wasn't an ethnic group. I once knew had a conversation with a girl and while talking about ethnicity/race, she told me that she was "half Dominican, half Jewish, half Christian, half Turkish, and half Asian." When I asked her how she is "half, half, half, half, and half and use religious groups to tell me what your ethnic group is?", she just looked at me like I was crazy and told me that's just what she was. All I did was shake my head at her. Even my boyfriend who is Honduran, when you ask him what his ethnicity is, he will proudly tell you that he is both Latino/Hispanic and Black. He doesn't go into all that nonsense that most people do and start saying he is half Jamaican and half Honduran. There is no one particular look to being a particular group of people. I myself am Nigerian [and yes, I know there is no one particular look to being Nigerian since there are various ethnic groups with various and distinct looks] but at times, due to people's ignorance about ethnicity and hair, I get mistaken for people of other ethnic groups and nationalities. If my boyfriend and I ever get married and have children, I wouldn't want this sort of perception of race/ethnicity to be passed down to them.
I know i'm late, but this is a cute style. Very romantic with the waves.
Thanks!
Pretty curls and shirt! 🙂
@curlygem, yeah I tried it with rope/sister twists and my hair was knotted, maybe I'll try it with regular twists sometime soon!
Gorgeous curls, Joy. Have you gotten the nerve to try a twist-n-curl yet? 'Cuz your braid-n-curl is NICE!!!
@tcollins, I'm glad you like it!
2Anonymous, Thanks, lol, yeah! 😀
Joy your hair came out really cute! Some individuals are forgetting that the human gene pool is a mysterious work of art.
Joy, your hair is Beautiful! I love your blog too!!
@Kristine, it is coarse, 2c-3a hair! It's naturally very thick, wavy and very textured, and my edges and nape is curly and fine and soft! Hope that helps! It's not straight!
I like your hair! Is your hair naturally straight or wavy?
Thanks!
You hair is cute hun!
@lexibugg, thank you so much!!
I am so disappointed, you would think a forum full of women of various ethnicities, would have sense enough not to try to tell someone who and what they are, regardless of their appearance!!! this really struck a nerve. my father is Haitian and my mother is Quapaw, Dominican(Spaniard) and Irish, and i have had to deal with people(particularly , black people) always trying to tell me what i am and how i have to identify myself. if i claimed to be anything other that "black", i hated myself, and was a shamed, and didn't want to be black, though there is no way i could ever be confused as any thing other than a person of African decent. my husband is German/Austrian, if any of our children had very light skin, blond hair and blue eyes, that would not make them white, expressing a certain set of dominant genes, does not determine your ethnic identity!!not everyone with curly, tightly curl, kinky curly, or kinky hair is of African decent!!! and please let the concept of race die, it is of a political construction not a scientific one.
Joy, sorry you have been met with such a response on this forum. i have to say i am shocked, and very disappointed!!
Native american, irish, german, or whatever, in America, you are white, hun. I'm sorry if someone tried to break it down for you and make it seem like you are not, but you are. embrace it, run with it, live with it.
However, your hair does look cute. And that's just on the straight up. lol
Looks beautiful!
Sorry. I meant, Nikki can we get you to moderate?
This is all ridiculous, both Anonymous and Joy. The girl had a cute hairstyle. Don't bring that other stuff over here. The comment should have been ignored and deleted. Nikki, can we get you moderate?
Every white person I know claims to be part Native American. I think they feel it will make them more acceptable. I agree that her ethnicity has nothing to do with her hair but her blond hair and blue eyes make it apparent what her ethnicity is and I see nothing ignorant about that.

Looks nice but um, YES, you are white. My husband is German and Irish and he is VERY white! It is okay to embrace different cultures and styles but don't ever deny who you are.

HAHA, when my Dad has cherokee on both sides and his mom has cherokee and apache on both sides, that's not white 😀
Notice cherokee and apache being at the front because THAT'S THE MOST I HAVE IN ME!!! I would never deny who I am, I am proud to be a native american, and if you can't hang with that, sorry. What point is it coming to when you can't show a hairstyle without somebody talking about race?
Thanks everyone!!! @Micaiahty, the purple rod is a little smaller than the orange and I got it from Sally's beauty supply store.
Hey Joy,
Keep it up. Very nice spiral on the curls. And for the others that are focusing on ethnicity and color of your skin, shame on them. If somone turned the tables on them and said " u r black" Lord help whomever said that… call the ACLU, call Jessie, call Al Sharpton! If anyone watched Nikki's video interview, she cleary stated that the forum is for "all curlies". So drop the negativity we don't need it. Treat people how you would want to be treat. If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. You know it is 2010!
Oh I am loving this style. With your purple rods Joy what size are those? I cant find the purple ones. I have the orange and Gray. I think they are 5/8 in size. The gray ones are a little bigger.
I love the big curl.. that is what i am looking for.
LOL
It doesn't matter what your ethnicity is, your hair is gorgeous!
On both sides of my family there are about 3 differents tribes of immediate native american ancestry along with creole (african/french) and afro american, and people always try to tell me that I can't claim my native american ancestry along with the others, even though that's what I am.
Whatever you go by, that's who you are. 🙂
it is pretty but it doesnt look like a braidout. it looks more like large spirals. Very unique=]
It just amazes me the ignorance that spews out of people's mouth. Saying your husband is German and Irish does not compare to her saying that she's cherokee and apache(that's not white)among others. Seriouly keep the negativity to yourself. This is supposed to be a community.
Joy thank you for putting yourself out there and trying something different-your hair looks FAB!!
Looks nice but um, YES, you are white. My husband is German and Irish and he is VERY white! It is okay to embrace different cultures and styles but don't ever deny who you are.
i'm diggin the diversity :))
love your hair joy , very different .
(= Thanks girl! Thanks a lot =)
You let her know Joy!!! Your hair looks awesome!
@AnonymousMay31 1:37, I am not white. My skin is very white, but I am american, cherokee, german, scottish, apache, and irish.
With all that comes thick, dry,curly/wavy hair, just because someone isn't black it doesn't mean they are *white* with straight oily hair, lol.
Joy, very nice work. I love the curly pattern…off to one side looks really nice.
u r white
yeah Joy, it's came out really nice! loving the hair!
Thanks everybody…that's me!!!
Nice to see kinky curly hair ideas crossing over and being celebrated by others. Very nice. 🙂
