A post on another curly blog, made me think….What would happen if Michelle Obama, our lovely First Lady, were to go natural? Now put your creativity cap on for today’s question:

What would Mrs. Obama’s natural, signature style be? Twist out, Bantu Knot out, etc. Why do you think that style would fit her?

Ladies: You are correct, Mrs. Obama is natural! This is part of an article I found online:

"Also an interview on Bellasugar revealed the following quote from Michelle Obama's intermittent hairdriesser Johnny Wright. "to keep her hair moisturized, I use the Shea Butter conditioner from Fekkai and Glossing Cream. It really keeps the hair moisturized. And Fekkai Coiff Anti-Frizz creme is excellent for that. It's probably one of my favorite products."

Further research told me something that made me very happy. It turns out that Michelle Obama does not use chemical relaxers in her hair. She is au naturale! A philly.com interview with Denise Davida, also of Fekka Salon reported, "her hair was blown out by Wright and that he did not use chemicals in her hair."

So for all my ladies bickering over the natural versus straight articles I have written, listen up! It is possible to have silky hair without using harsh chemicals."

I think her signature style would be a twist out if she would wear it curly. I love her hair though.

yea I would love to see some natural STATEEEEEEE

this is never seen with hair in the 4s

  • Terra D says:

Sorry, for the mis-communication ladies. The question was focused on her wearing her hair in it's natural state.

She would probably do rod sets and up dos. They are conservative compared to twists.

  • True Naturalista says:

Even though, I am a naturalista myself, I am against Mrs. Obama wearing her hair in its natural state. She has to represent the entire United States, not just African- Americans and unfortunately, natural Balck hair represents less then 1% of the nation. Also, Republicans, along with Democrats, would have a field day with her.

  • Aishah says:

I too think Mrs. Obama is natural. When I used to press my hair (no relaxer) people would get so excited because my hair was so straight that they thought I finally relaxed my hair LOL So you can't just look at someone's hair and REALLY know if it's relaxed or a hot comb press-and-curl.

The first lady's signature do would definitely be buns or two strand twist up-do's.

  • Shayla says:

Wow, if she's natural and works out all of the time (running!)like I read in several magazines, and gets a press and curl, I can't imagine the toll all of that heat is taking on her hair if she's anything like me! When I was relaxed, I'd sweat my hair out in a week!

  • Yvette says:

I'm going to have to agree with an earlier comment and say a bantu knot out. It's the closest to a press-n-curl and would be a nice transition style if she decided to go "no heat" natural (if that makes sense).

  • Anonymous says:

Yeah, like the others, as far as I know she is a natural and her signature style is the press-n-curl. However, if she were to embrace her natural texture I think she'd be really into buns and creative updos. Or She'd have a short look, something that would appear to be 1-2" long shrunken.

Remember the New Yorker magazine cover when the President was campaigning? I don't think that she will go natural anytime soon. Maybe when he wins the second term!

I think she would wear her hair in a elegant bun, or an elegant updo. Can you imagine what their haters would say if she wore an afro! That would just be another thing for them to hate on them about.

  • The Melanista says:

I could totally see Michelle Obama natural. I think her sigy style would be a classic twist and curl or braid and curl. I think the style is professional, conservative and very chic.

Yes Michelle is natural. I read an article on her hair stylist (forgot his name), and he gave steps and products he used to get her hair straight. Looking at photos of Michelle over the years, I think the press-n-curl *is* her signature style.

  • Southernbellebronxtale says:

I cans see her wear a twist and curl curly nikki style

You can tell Sasha and Malia are natural and occasionally get a press and curl for the straight look, but I'm not really sure Michelle is natural. I think she has a relaxer and after her new bob hair cut earlier this year she may have even added a few extension pieces in the back to get a fuller look. I'm an avid michelle obama fan so I'm just stating some of the changes in her hair that I've noticed over the past 2 years. I really like the way her hair looks now and Michelle seems like such a confident and self-assured woman. If she wanted to go natural today she would just do it, but she prefers the straight look because it makes her feel good. All black women should have the choice to rock whatever style they choose without being seen as a militant or conformist stereotype. From what one of her longtime hair stylist has said, Michelle is all about proper hair care and keeping her hair healthy, which is very smart. All in all it comes down to proper hair care and health whether you are natural or relaxed.

But as for the question of whether or not America is ready for a natural haired African-American First Lady, I think it is possible, but it would be met with many ignorant and harsh comments, particularly from those who are completely against President Obama. Since everything they do has become political (remember their NYC date night, tax payer debacle?) many people would try to use it against not only her but the President to insight fear and build upon the idea that they are not really American. However, I do think there are many Americans that would embrace it and respect her choice.

yup i heard her hair was relaxer-free also

I think her signature style would be Bantu Knot out because it would give her the classic yet modern sytle that she likes.

  • aubin says:

Michelle Obama *is* natural, as are her daughters. Her signature style is press and curl! I would love to see her wear her hair naturally curly though.

  • Mimi (Mae) says:

I think Michelle Obama would look great in some mini cornrows, like the ones Susan L. Taylor wears. They are simple and elegant. The more elegant braided styles of Jada Pinkett Smith would be nice as well.
