Lori asks:
I’ve been a bad girl. I strayed from my Curly Girl routine a month ago and my hair is acting up. Build up I guess? My hair likes all natural products and I knew that, but I let my inner PJ get the best of me.
What have you done (or not done) to your hair that you need to confess?
CN responds: I’ve totally neglected my hair in the ‘treatments’ department. I haven’t done a Henna or Deep Condition in months! I’m sure the mistreatment will only get worse after the baby arrives. Luckily my hair isn’t acting out because of it… the only tell-tale signs are a few gray roots.
I the past 3 weeks weeks I have been blow drying my hair to stretch it out (low heat). Since my hair has gotten longer, it seems to tangle more. I also have flat ironed a few times. It looks fine, but I feel guilty because I have not used this much heat in my hair in a a close period of time for awhile. I usually do it every 3-4 months when I get a trim. I feel scared like my hair is going to fall out, even though I have been using low heat and heat protectant products.
I will never give up my brush that I use on my edges. NEVER! It's the softest brush (my curly headed friend asked me one time how the heck was my brush supposed to brush a baby's hair) that I've had since forever, and I gave up my hard brush – but I need this! Won't. Can't. Not gonna let it go. Even though I know it's not that good for my hair – esp. my edges, but it lays them down sooo nicely.

I hate my hair. I don't have coils or curls or any of that. Just this…mass that I can't deal with. It has no definition, no form, no nothing. Just a horrible, frizzy mess. I get it washed and twisted by my hairdresser twice a month because I have no idea what else to do to it. I watch the youtube videos, and attempt the styles and techniques , and it's a disaster EVERY TIME. It NEVER looks like those girls' hair. I'm tired of the twists and relying on someone else, but I'm tired of wasting money and time on products that won't work. I'm tired of panicking when I can't get a hair appointment because I want to wash my hair but I can't – it'll look like hell and I have to go to work. I don't have time for this mess! I just want to look nice for once. I think I'm just too old and big for this.
I was the same way when I first cut off my permed hair. I couldn't stand to deal with my own natural hair. It wouldn't curl or lie flat or anything. I couldn't do a damn thing with it. I can't tell you how many times I came close to either chopping it all off or going back to the salon for a perm. Some days I still feel that way. It takes time to get to know what works best for your hair. I have tried everything, and I mean EVERYTHING. It was expensive and time consuming but very much worth it. Trust that once you find your right combo of products and styling techniques, you'll be so in love with your hair you won't know what to do with yourself. I used to hide my hair under hats and weaves and braids because I just couldn't figure it out. I must have 3 or 4 different textures on my head and they all want to do their own thing. But through trial and A LOT of error, I'm finally getting into a steady routine that works for my hair and my budget. Just be patient and keep trying, you'll find your groove soon.
i haven't deep conditioned my hair in 7 or 8 months. yikes, i know. how do i retain length? i dont know. lol. but my hair is pretty long and it's been the same length for a while now and i dont mind it.
Fustrated Anonymous ….have you tried using Miss jessies Or Kinky Curly curling Custard. You cant use same items you used on perms…no sulfate shampoos, can you have your hair dresser try a different style that will make you feel better…..i understand your fustration with hair I was like that too some bad hair days I still wear beanies I HOPE THIS HELPS 🙂 dont give up learn the new hair and new you!!!
I've been in and out of the pool all summer so I have nothing but shrinkage. Trying to keep up with the co-washing and DC'ing is just about wearing me out but I'm hanging in! My big mistake was getting busy with the blow dryer. I can just hear my hair snapping and tearing. It's already dried out from the chlorine. Why did I go there? I know my hair does not like heat. From moist and coily it's now dry and frizzy. Gotta turn this car around!!!
Thanks for taking the time to give me some feedback ladies!! It is well appreciated!

I keep wearing my hair pull back into bun; I am NOT appreciating my curly locks by taking the time to work w/them and let them loose: AND AS A RESULT MY HAIRLINE IS THINNING FAST 🙁
I've been a bad young lady for a VERY long time (7 years) I have not embraced the beauty of my natural hair until recently after my first year in college. I have been natural my whole life and I have been blow drying and flat ironing my hair since I was 12. Now that I am trying to embrace this natural beauty my hair is teaching me a BIG lesson. I am spending a whole lot of money trying to figure out what she likes. Hope she can forgive me 🙁
I haven't washed or cowashed in almost 2 weeks because my job and the non-profit I work with have kept me so busy! Event though I've kept in in a bun and moisturized the best I could, I know I'm gonna pay for it 🙁
worst thing i have done….texturized the front of my post 6 months transitioning hair to put in a weave for my graduation and is so regrettin it.might turn into a long term transitioner or may BC and start fresh.
I am new to the whole natural thing (3 inches of new growth) and going to a wedding this weekend. I went to my hairdresser to have her do a twist and curl for me b/c I am not too good myself and wanted something that would last. She only put a little pomemaid (sp?) on my hair and then dried it with a towel and twisted it…sat me up under the dryer, untwisted it and then spraid it with hairspray. The results are disasterous. I have a football helmet on my head…that i PAID for. I have had better results experimenting on my own! Next time I will speak up b/c as much as I thought I didn't know turns out I know a little more…
NEVER EVA AGAIN
i used the jamila henna and a rinse without problems.
Thanks Anonymous for taking the time to help me!
Coloring my hair myself…twice,my ends are HORRIBLE!!! I need a trim sooo bad!
Believe it or not Takie – I consider my gelled TWA to be a protective style!
1. Apply my appropriate leave in and then my gel,
2. Next morning, lightly mist w/water or favorite hair refresher to pop the curls/coils back out,
3. Gelling keeps hands out of hair. Protective style accomplished!
The worst thing I can do to my hair is to rock a wash & go without sealing my hair with castor oil. Single strand knots out the wazoo…
I haven't been twisting it and keeping in protective styles as much as I probably should and have had to wrestle with single strand knots because of it XD

I've been wearing a protective style for my twa and my hair is screaming for a co-wash. I want to keep my hands out of my hair though. This is why I have the protective style.
Takie,
try Giovanni Direct leave in conditioner sold at Ulta, Randalls, Heb….that Aubrey Deep conditioner Curly Nikki uses is great! look at her hair routine for details of that also something else thats EXPENSIVE that I tried was Ojon restoration treaments that helps…
I have been doing wash and goes for 2 weeks and not deep treating. My hair is very mad at me right now.
Also, @ NTRALBEEUTY, as long as it is 100% henna and not the synthetic stuff you will be fine. The metals in the henna that is not 100% can react with the dye in hair color and cause changes.
I had 5 day old twist out in a ponytail that was in desperate need of a cowash and deep condition and I tried to detangle it dry. 🙁 Horrible idea. I gave up after 10 minutes.
Okay I just did my big chop and my twa is very dry…What can I do…When I use curtain products the build up is horrible and by style last about a day or so….Can anyone help me?
I went hiking in the mountains with my hair out. What started out as a soft, curl-defined style turned into a wild, frizzy tangled mess that caught every dangling pine needle. I didn't pack a comb or conditioner and had to use the little conditioner bottle in the hotel. Tried to finger comb it through. Lot of knotted hair down the drain. I returned home in cornrolls.
Me too: Never. Again
I've been manipulating my hair much more than I should but I can't seem to get it back to its moisturized state since coming back from that darn SUPER HOT sun (Bahamas Cruise)! Yeah, I know I should have kept it under wraps but I had to set her FREE on the boat/island!!! …I was cute…*sniff
NTRALBEBEAUTY
I don't think you are suppose to henna your hair after you've colored it…. I heard the results could be catastrophic (like resulting in green hair!?!?!)
I'm no henna expert, but you might want to do some research before you do that…
I am wearing a beanie today because I have a Twa and I only get 2nd day hair out of my KC
HELP **** I need a protective style for my 4month old TWA!!!!!!!!:-~~~koko
I was trimming my hair in twists. I was doing really well until I got to the last 1/4 of my head and I got tired so I just started snipping without twisting *pops hand*
I colored a small section of the front nd the back of my hair (GASP!!) and am going to do a henna because I can't believe I did it!! My hair feels sort of dry in those areas and is in desperate need of some treatments.
I went to the beach last Friday and I've just washed my hair for the first time since leaving. The worst part is that I wasn't detangling either.
I paid for my negligence yesterday. Longest shower ever 😛
Never. Again.
