I have something very special that I want to share with you and the entire CurlyNikki community.

A few weeks back my bestie Baije was featured on your website and I was SUPER EXCITED for her. In her submission she mentioned me and a documentary I did for my capstone project. The name of my documentary is entitled, “Hairstory.”
Since CurlyNikki is a website that features stories of naturals/transitioners, I think that you and the rest of the readers on the site will enjoy this documentary. I hope you enjoy it!

I have enjoyed this post. It was well informed and gave one of the true meanings of natural hair.

    WONDERFUL job.

This is great. I am a fellow Claflinite '06, Mass Communications major, and naturalista. I think this video is great. Ms. Johnson continue to do great things. You make us proud. CU!!!!

Thank you for the support everyone! Please tell a friend to tell a friend to tell a friend! Hahaha! I wish Chris Rock would see this! Anyone have his address? lol

Wow this is amazing. I really enjoyed this. SN: This is such a small world. I attended the sister school of Claflin, South Carolina State. Which right next door. What happened Voorhes, which down the road from our school, was a shame. It shouldn't matter what our looks like, it's how the queen represents the school that counts.

Omg! Ja'Nel is on curlynikki!!! I'm so proud of her! I remember the day she presented the video to everyone, it was the most anticipated project 1. because it was Ja'Nel 2. cuz it was Ja'Nel lol aka best major comm student. I remember watching this video with my straight hair and it was at that point I made the decision to transition which is a big deal because I use to LOVE my relaxers even said "I was a slave to the perm! and I'll do that natural stuff!" after that viewing I begin the research and pow I'm a curlynikki stalker! lol

    I'm so proud of her!
btw if you thought the documentary was good, you should have seen her coronation! lol woo hoo go claflin c/o 2010!

    just wait we'll be famous
    a Just J & Pandamonium production!!
This website is perfect for the exposure with all the right people to appreciate it! love it and love ya Ja'Nel!

Great job Ja'Nel! and I TOTALLY agree w/honeybrown1976 – "Good Hair" was more of a mock instead of showing how natural beauty is real beauty and not damaging yourself w/those chemicals. It's a shame how African Americans (especially) as well as other races/cultures deem "natural hair" I'm loving my TWA! Ohh Ohh!

  • honeybrown1976 says:

This is what "Good Hair" failed tremendously in doing. Chris Rock mocked us. You informed us. Great job!

Hi Everyone! Thank you for taking the time out to watch my documentary. The feedback has me PUMPED! I don't have a Youtube page so this is all I have until I start graduate school in January. I can't wait to get my hands back on a camera! I just want all of you to keep it natural! It's beautiful and it's time for us to embrace ourselves just the way we are! Again, thank you for the support and tell everyone you know to watch it! LOL! OH, HI BRITTANY! 🙂

Such an awesome video i loved it!! Very informative and creative…i can't wait to share this video with mom. She is accepting of my hair but still doesn't understand why I wear my hair natural 🙂 I look forward to more videos from you…5 stars loved it!!

Great video, its such a deep topic and could have gone on longer. Totally shocked at the girl forced to relax her hair by the University. Thanks for sharing

  • Nicole says:

Great Job! Really enjoyed the ending.

Oh My Goodness, I went to middle school with Ja'Nel and her hair has always been beautiful> i loved the vid. It captured everything in 10 minutes. Of course each topic could have a deeper conversation, but this was a perfect overview for people like my boyfriend. I am natural now and I love the strength and beauty of my hair, yet still struggle with the thought of going back to relaxers. It'll take some time.
    Great job Ja'Nel!!

I love to see a black woman using her talents. Great job and please keep them coming. You spoke the truth and then left the decision to the viewers. You are talented….SHINE MY SISTA!!!!!

  • Tonya says:

    Well done! Well said!

I loved this piece. Great little positive pick me up that was honest, and well laid out. My only question for Ja'Nel is: You going to apply to Chris Rock for "Good Hair, part 2"? He seems to need some help diving in and exploring natural hair more deeply. You'd be great for his team! 🙂

  • blackricangirl says:

I loved it. If you ever want to make it longer I would definitely love to share my hair story.

  • momo7 says:

You did a really great job with this…thoughtful research and you got your point across in such a short time. I enjoyed this a lot; hope you received an A!

Great job! Very interesting and informative 🙂

This was beyond exciting! I am truly inspired. Please locate some grants or find out how this can be shown at a film festival, if you are not doing so already. I would suggest Oprah, (she may or may not be receptive). At any rate your work can seriously rival Chris Rock's Good Hair. Please work on getting this out to mass media. Also try Michael Baisden. You are some talent who is definitely using your God given gifts.

Ja'Nel: Your capstone project was well-researched and engaging. In just 10 minutes, you managed to touch on several issues that are a part of the conversation regarding natural hair: self-perception, external reactions, employment implications, and personal budgeting/financial implications. You are clearly a very talented young woman – Claflin made the right decision making you Miss Claflin. My bet is that as an alumna, you'll bring significant acclaim to the institution in the years to come!! Kudos!!
