Kelly- Tales of a Current Transitioner
CN:Are you a long term or short term transitioner, and why?
I am a long term transitioner, I am currently 9 months into my transition. I have always worn the latest short styles (Halle Berry cut, bobs, etc… ). Now I want to enjoy having some length.

CN:When are you going to BC?
On April 6th 2010, a stylist cut off 3 1/2 inches of my mid-back length hair without my approval. She did such a sloppy job that I had to go to another stylist and have her cut off another inch and a half to make my hair look decent. That for me was my big chop. Since then I have had about 2 1/2 more inches trimmed off keeping my hair at armpit length.

CN: How did family and friends react to your decision to go natural?
My husband is trying to get used to the idea. As for others, I don’t know what they think nor do I care. My son is my biggest cheerleader, he loves the waves in my hair.

CN:What is your transition routine?
I wash and deep condition weekly with a light protein conditioner for 15 to 30 minutes followed by a moisturizing conditioner for an hour with my heatcap. I rinse my conditioner out lightly and apply my leave-in in the shower and detangle. I then towel blot with my microfiber towel and apply my moisturizer of choice followed by a light oil. I then proceed to rollerset.

CN: How do you moisturize your hair to prevent breakage at the new growth line?.
I apply my UBH lotion creme moisturizer or the komaza shea butter hair lotion to my hair daily.

CN: Why did you choose to go natural?
I see lots of black women with thin hair and bald spots and I know most of it is from them relaxing their hair– I don’t want that to be me one day. Plus I am just tired of relaxing my hair and all that goes with it.

CN: What is your staple hair style during your transition?
At the beginning of my transition I was doing lots of twist and braidouts on wet hair but I did not like what my hair looked like with the new growth and straight ends so now I do braidouts on rollerset hair mostly. I rollerset then braid or I will straighten my hair out with my ceramic iron every 10 to 14 days in case I feel like dusting the ends.I never blowdry because blowdryers deplete moisture from the hair. Now that I have a lot more new growth I do plan on doing more wet sets.
