Hey Nikki,
I was married to the man God created for me, July 10th, 2010. I have been natural for 4 years and LOVE my curls! My hair is a representation of me; busy, eccentric, and FREE! I feel comfortable with it, and I am so over the days of the cookie cutter, relaxed bob. However, I struggled with my wedding day hair. Family and friends all had their opinions, yet most wanted me to leave it curly. My husband said he would love my hair however it was styled because he was marrying me, and not my hair.
I was torn! I rarely straighten my hair, because I am very anti-heat. Yet, I was totally anxious to see how much length had been added since my winter blowout. My husband is about the same height as me, but with my big curls springing about all over my head, and a cute pair of heels, I instantly become taller than him. So, I decided that I would brave the Texas heat, the crazy morning at the salon, and LET MY HAIR DOWN. I did not give into to any “straightening pressure”, I embrace my natural hair. Besides, I did not want to be super tall over my husband at the alter! In the end, I love the way my hair turned out. There were no frizzes to be found, only the sweet aroma of love, joy, and peace!
I will never forget the look on my husband’s face when I walked down the aisle. It was the most endearing look, he was drawn to my heart, and not the styling of my hair. He was not marrying me because my hair was curly or straight. I hope other natural brides will do what feels good. Just keep it NATURAL. Don’t ever place yourself in a box, and let your natural hair shine!
P.S. ( I went back curly the next day!)
Thanks for reading and I love all the curlies of CurlyNikki! π

Beautiful wedding hair!!! Eboni, are you a JW btw?
Congratulations Eboni! Your hair and dress looks absolutely amazing. I'm a newbie to natural hair and I wish I would've started years ago so that I could've been a natural bride. By the way, you were married on my birthday. Yay! May God bless you in your marriage and in everything that you do. Again, congrats!
Thanks for the product response! I don't know if I would be that brave to use heat w/o protection, but clearly it worked for you. In June (for the first time) I used Aveda (Damage Control and Humectant Pomade) and mine reverted the minute I shampooed.
Much peace, joy and blessings to you both. I am claiming my "blessing" too!
Peace from NY.
Thanks to all you ladies, the support here is awesome! I just love my husband,David and marriage is a blessing. Thanks to Nikki for posting my story and giving us natural's a place to call home. I appreciate the support and well wishes!
My stylist uses Paul Mitchell SuperCharge Shampoo and Conditioner! She always does a deep conditioning, and puts me under the dryer for 15 mins. She then rinses me and blow dries my hair. Then it is on to the press. She says that my hair is anti-product lol..so she does not put anything in it for the blow dry and press. After she lightly presses it, she puts a tiny bit of polisher, and that's all! My hair did not have any frizzing and did not revert at all, even with the Texas heat. I did wet it in the shower that night and wore it in a wavy ponytail for about 3 days after the wedding!
Awwwww…your hair looks nice! Congrats! π ~KF519
Congratulations! You were a beautiful bride!
Congratulations!!! Your hair looks beautiful.
Congratulations and many happy years. Love the pics and thanks for sharing. Can you share what products you used to protect your hair prior to using heat? Really like the faith declaration that you were created for each other.
Peace from NY.
Eboni, you looked GORGEOUS on your wedding day! Congrats π One question though, I know you mentioned that there were no frizzies, does that mean that your hair didn't revert even throughout the reception? I've been considering straight hair for my wedding but fear that by the time I'm done dancing at my reception I'll have sweat it all out.
Thanks!
Your picures are beautiful! I'm getting married in May in Houston, and everyone keeps asking me what I'm going to do with my hair. I think I might go straight and put it in chignon but still don't know. Looking at your pictures gives me so much hope. May God continue to bless your union.
You look beautiful hun! I'm happy to see that we are embracing the different styles we can wear our hair and aren't limited to just being curly. In a world where many naturals will look down on you for deciding to straighten your hair, I know how it is. I enjoy switching up my hair.. & I know how the Texas heat is so a straight style is definitely only a one day/one event style lol!
MissCurly,
Thanks! Well put. I love flipping my hair when it's straight! LOL! I love the fact that I can acheive the look without chemicals. And of course bringing on the water, means the curls are back in town!
Thanks, Jeannette! The versatility of natural hair is the best! I try to avoid heat, but wanted something different for my wedding day. I think it is great that you don't limit your styling and does what works for you. The lady who styled me is a good friend, who knows my hair well. As far as protective styling, I love twist, yet mine leave little to be desired!
I love it! I think too many of us get caught up in being natural that sometimes we limit ourselves in styling. I'm a natural who loves her curls but also likes to change up her style sometimes. Nothing wrong with wearing your hair straight, that doesn't make you any less natural. Feel proud in knowing that your hair can be straight without chemicals and when you want your curls back just bring on the water!
Made my going natural announcement today – check it out: http://chocolatemomrants.blogspot.com/
CONGRATULATIONS Eboni!!!!!
Your hair looks great! I know what you mean, I don't limit the styling of my hair and have been trying new and different looks. For a whole year I would straighten my hair and as it got longer I got tired of looking at a straight look when my hair was natural. I started switching it up and now have been wearing protective hair styles, braids and twists. I love the versatility of our hair!
