CN: When you first chopped, what were your thoughts and feelings? How do you feel now?
I did the big chop 1 month ago, August 21, 2010; the day before my bday π When I first chopped, I was so disappointed. I was immediately saddened when I got in the car, and looked in the mirror. It was sooo short. In fact, on the way home, I purchased a lace front wig to wear until my hair grew out. Now, I feel much better. Thanks to the support of my husband, cousins, family and friends, I decided not to wear the wig. Everyone encouraged me to “rock” the TWA and my natural beauty. I’ve done just that since then…:)
CN: How did you cope with the responses from your family and friends?
I’ve only dealt with a couple of negative responses. The most important response, however, was my husband’s; he and I had numerous conversations before I actually did the Big Chop. Even though he was okay with me getting it cut, I was still so nervous about his reaction. But, we’ve both adjusted well, and love it! Not too mention the convenience of the TWA! So… all in all, I’ve coped nicely, since I’ve basically had a lot of support.
CN:What are your plans for your hair?
Oh my goodness, I want to grow, grow, grow my hair out. I am so ready! I am looking forward to the versatility of twists, twist outs, and all of the other styles I come across on this website π
CN: Do you find it necessary to ‘doll up’ your look to feel more feminine?
When I left the shop, I asked one of my cousins to apply make up because I felt like I looked a little ‘manly’. So, the Big Chop pic below is one with me wearing makeup and my contacts. Initially, I planned to never leave the house with nothing less than eye shadow and earrings; and I definitely planned to permanently swap out my glasses for contact. Now, LOL, people are lucky to catch me with earrings on! I am just so comfortable with my TWA now. If you catch me out now, you’ll find me wearing lip gloss, glasses, and possibly some earrings.
CN: How do you keep your hair moisturized?
This is definitely a struggle for me right now– I haven’t mastered it at all. I’ve spent countless hours perusing curlynikki.com for different tips; but I haven’t found the right combination for keeping my hair moisturized.
CN: How do you get your waves or curls popping?
Ha! I’ve just been co-washing with v05 moisture milk, throwing on some Knot Today and combing out my TWA. However, as of today, I started using Knot Today and KCCC; basically doing finger coils… that’s the best I can describe it… I saw the styling tutorial on this website. Great results!
CN: How do you preserve your curls at night?
You look great. Go ahead and give in to your inner product junkie. ;~} You'll be so upset if you don't and a year later you still haven't tried something we've all discussed here. LOL Enjoy it while you can. Pretty soon you'll find yourself settling in to a routine and a few products. Don't forget about the Swap section in the forums. That's a good way to try products by trading with others.
Good luck with your journey.
I can really relate to your feelings after your BC as I felt the same way, sad. Mainly because my hair was sooo short. I BC on May 27 and was off from work the next 4 days which enabled me to get use to it. I received many positive responses too and that and knowing my hair was going to be healthier made me overcome all the anxieties I was feeling.
Your hair looks great! Keep doing what you're doing.
Hey imagine my surprise seeing one of my girls on one of my favorite sites. I know I've said it before but you look fierce rocking your twa, you are definitly inspiring me darling.
Thanks ladies and thanks for the post Nikki! @ Candice— Thanks again!!!!
I visit this site daily, and today I log in to find a classmate from college. Go Alicia!!!! So proud of you, you look beautiful!
It could be just me but the ads are right in the middle of the articles today π
WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF NATURAL HAIR!!
You are beautiful and your complexion is HAWT!
You seem to be doing every thing very well to be on your way to growing the long hair you desire.
Like you, my goal is to grow super long hair that I can sit on. LOL
I've been natural for only 6 months and when people see how long my hair is, they are shocked. You know what, I'm shocked too!
When my bangs are stretched it goes down to my nose! And when the back of my hair is stretched it touches the lower part of my neck! All this hair in only 6 months.
Follow a good regimen and you will be sitting on your hair in no time. LOL!
