Do You Part Your Natural Hair?
Tonya writes:

When relaxed, I wore a wrap. I always placed my part on the side, the right side to be exact. Now that I’m natural, parts make me feel like Fredrick Douglas, LOL. Do you part and if so, which side? Do you ever switch it up? When you don’t wear parts, how do you style the front?

  • Anonymous says:

I part my hair down the middle and on the left side! I'm going to start wearing two braids for a while with my summer hat ;-)

  • kisha says:

LOL i feel u on the Freddy D (fredrick douglas) aka the F Dougy, my boyfriend pointed it out after my first braid out. i started doing slanted side parts

  • Nicole says:

I just really love the photo of that model.

  • azureDizzle says:

Ive always parted my hair on the left side. even if i get it flat ironed. I know its good to change your part to keep your hair from thinning on whatever side you part. Ive tried to part it in the middle but i dont like it that much. I think i look like Sideshow bob from the simpsons.

  • JustJazzzy says:

I am three months into my transition with shoulder-length relaxed ends. I usually do a left-side part, but it pretty much has disappeared with all the new-growth.

  • Jasmine says:

    i sure do. i <3 my parts.

  • Anonymous says:

Yeah, I know I am late, but that Frederick Douglas comment was too damn funny.

    **still chuckling**

  • nellboogie says:

I use to part my hair when it was relaxed and since my 'fro is bigger, I part on the left. My hair likes to naturally fall in that direction. Quite frankly, I miss when my hair use to stand straight up. My husband told me that I look like Samuel L. Jackson from the movie "Unbreakable"…know any good divorce attorneys? LOL!

  • Anonymous says:

I didn't part my TWA, that just looked funny. Now with longer hair, I do part sometimes for a little change in style. My natural part is straight down the middle – maybe from all those 2 ponytail styles my mother put in when I was a child. Sometimes I do a short, gentle part somewhat off center. I kind of like the Frederick Douglas look…

  • Anonymous says:

lol@ fredrick Douglas,, i been natural for 2 years and i am only 16 years old,, i love to part my hair to make it have more style to it,, but the thing i hate is when i have my twists or twist outs, people ask me what is that? Like how do i get twist,, and it is so ashame when black people do not know their own hair. But other then that i feel proud when i see other black women natural. we also appear very bold and strong, also beautiful

  • kitka82 says:

I know it's not THAT serious but OMG I am STILL laughing (and now crying)!!! I must have needed a good belly laugh! Y'all a trip!!

  • Anonymous says:

I don't give my hair a hard part like I did when it was straightened, but I do still guide the curls to make a sort of part. I still like a shallow diagonal part.

  • Yasmin says:

I agree with the "Gumby" comment! Parting shorter hair is NOT a good idea! But once my hair did get longer, I began doing side parts. I also took a triangular section in the front of my head, blow dried and flat ironed it and trimmed myself some bangs! I wear my bangs straight usually to either side…. Unfortunately I wear them straight SOOOO MUCH that front section no longer curls correctly. :(

  • Carla says:

Count me in LOLing @ Fredrick Douglas! My part naturally falls in the middle. I only part my hair on the side when I'm wearing a bun and able to slick my hair down on the sides.

  • Tele says:

My friend was just telling me how disappointed she was now that my hair has grown from the 1 1/2 inches it was because she can no longer call me Gary Coleman. . . Now it is 4 inches and I dont rock the part unless I have a clip in it!

  • Jaye says:

OMG I was just telling my best friend how I look like Frederick Douglass or Winnie from Hocus Pocus when I part my hair! Maybe when it gets longer I'll be able to do it, but not right now, lol

  • Anonymous says:

When I was relaxed it was always a side part, I hated everything there was to hate about middle parts. As a natural, I cant get a good side part to save my life, smh…how things change.

Now I love how a middle part looks idk, i guess it's cause a side part creates the illusion of volume, and in a situation where you already have volume, you need something in the middle [pun intended] to balance it out

  • Anonymous says:

Since I let my Fro go gray, I have had a Morgan Freeman moment or two. YIKES! Distinguished and cool on him, not so much on me. Then one day I did little comb coils and dammit if Don Cheadle wasn't staring out of the mirror at me!

  • Miss Emme says:

I go to Morgan State and we have a huge statue of Freddy D in the middle of our quad, so I am very familiar with his part. lol.

I hated parting my twa when I first big-chopped. As it grew longer I experimented with a right side part [religiously parted on the left when I was relaxed]. Lately, a braid-out with a middle part has been quite friendly to me. Guess the length makes a difference for me.

  • Queenofthe4s says:

    LOL @ "FreddyD"

I center part (or off center left) if I twist my hair

  • Anonymous says:

since my hair has grown for a year and a half, I now do a small MIDDLE part. And I love it!!!!!

I just had someone tell me a couple of days ago that they did not like my middle part…the next day I had my MIDDLE part…because I LOVE IT!!!

I just love the MIDDLE part look on my natural hair!

Join me! In the MIDDLE!!! lol

and yes, I know bout that Frederick Douglas feeling…but, once I do the MIDDLE part, I just think I am tooo cute!

  • Nikki J. says:

I wore a part when relaxed and I wear a part now. Sometimes in the center, sometimes a side part. I do make a conscious effort to not put a part in sometimes but it always comes back. lol.

  • kimmie0810 says:

I don't do a sharp part-drawing a line down my scalp w/a comb. But I do make a part with my finger to give the curly 'fro a different look. I don't make the part long either, just a tad bit back from my hairline. I'm a habitual right side parter–I wrapped that way for YEARS! Sometimes I just brush back the edges a bit on one side or right in the middle if my curls are "floppy". If it's bushier, I forego the part & wear a headband.

I have the DARNEDEST time trying to decide what to do with the front of my hair!! With the part or a side swept bang, I look like El Debarge or an extra in West Side Story

  • Anonymous says:

OMG this is TOO funny! Now afraid to wear my hair parted for the fear of looking like Fredrick Douglas or Gumby. And I definitely will not part it down the middle perfectly… LOL!

  • Anonymous says:

OMG you ladies are TOO FUNNY with these comments, I am crying laughing reading them & no I do not part my natural hair! – Onebyd42

  • Amaspiritartist says:

I do side parts, even though I do look like Frederick Douglass sometimes….because I had a center part for twelve years with my locks, and I am trying to break my hair of that tendency…I switch the part from side to side…

  • Skeeta says:

HAHAHA I wore a part one time with a green shirt and my mom said I looked like gumby. I stopped wearing a part until my hair grew out some more. LOL

  • BreukelensFinest says:

i never thought about it but my natural hair is parted in the complete opposite of when i had my permed hair. People have joked around and called me frederick douglass but i don't take offense to that anymore cuz at the end of the day they know i look cute!!

  • Anonymous says:

I do think some peopple look like Frederick Douglass or George Washington Carver when they part their natural hair. I thought I was the only one, and I didn't want to be attacked for thinking that.

I think parts look great in natural hair, you just have to part it to suit you. I think everyone has a natural part and that part is usually the best look for that individual.

  • Anonymous says:

I'm with everyone else on that Frederick Douglas comment!! I am still laughing!!

I am a reluctant transitioner right now so parting is still habit for me. I still do it to try to be with my damaged relaxed hair and because my natural hair is only about 2 or 3 inches long. I do think that parts will seem a bit useless as I gain more length and cut the craziness off the ends.

Can't wait til that day comes!

  • Anonymous says:

For some reason, my hair automatically "Fredrick Douglas" part right smack in the middle. My hair is too long now to do my blow out afros anymore.

I have tried the side parts, but it just looks funny. My hair is naturally white and when i henna it looks like FIRE right in the middle. (Oh Lawd!) So…I am now wearing protective styles for the colder months, hopefully by the Spring I will have more creative ideas to try..

  • Anonymous says:

I'm transitioning and currently 7 months post. I am now the headband queen. non parts for me.

  • Doc says:

    hahahhahaha @ 'fredick douglas look'
i do a subtle part in the middle. i try to make it uneven and direct my hair toward the NW/NE (or SW/SE areas of my head (so not quite straight back but not quite down the sides)
i mostly like it; side parts don't work all that well for me- perhaps my hair isn't long enough yet.
i also always parted when i was relaxed…strange

  • Anonymous says:

LMAO – I know the Fredrick Douglas look you're talking about. One day I was having a bad hair day, I had a side part (my hair looked just like Fredrick Douglas' hair) and my boyfriend asked, "What did you do to your head?" :-)

  • Courtney says:

LOL! I sort of roughly separate a part, somtimes to the side, sometimes in the middle. I don't use a comb to part neatly, I think that looks strange with natural hair (at least on me).

  • Anonymous says:

Lol, I told my boyfriend I look like Frederick Douglas this past weekend.

  • Anonymous says:

When I was younger and had really full hair, I'd always part my hair down the middle. My hair started thinning out in the front about 7yrs ago which freaked me out and I started parting it to the side on the right side. Since I've been transitioning, my hair has started thicknening again and now that I know I like the side part and the middle part, I will be alternating when I'm fully natural. When I don't part it, is usually because I have it pulled back in a bun…

  • Denisse G says:

Lmao omg i swear this weekend i was thinking sheesh i look like frederick douglas but cuter. Ever since i became natural i tended to go for more middle parts i don't know why i think it makes my face look less chubby. I used to adore side parts & i still do but i need it to flatter my face as well.

  • Efe says:

When I was relaxed, I wore a left side part. Now, I part my hair on the right side. Weird, huh?

  • NikNak says:

    LOL! @ Fredrick Douglas…

    I do not part.

  • modest-goddess says:

braid/twists out yes I part my hair and I actually refer to it as a "Frederick Douglas"

  • Misspretty* says:

    LOL @ "Fredrick Douglas" comment.
When transitioning I wore my hair in a bun, my part was in the middle. Now with my beautiful braid-out, I cornrow the front and pull it out.At first you could see the part now not so much.

  • Kell K. says:

LOL @ Frederick Douglass! I habitually part on the right side and said I looked like Leon in "5 Heartbeats" or any other random "old-time" movie with him in it. My hair is about chin-length now and I can't find another way to do it, considering the hair framing my face is short.

  • Anonymous says:

Side/off center parts for flat twists or else I look like a little boy at least that's what I see, lollololol.

For twist outs no parts, just let the hair fall as it may.

  • kitka82 says:

Frederick Douglass… ROFL I nearly spit out my BLT. I haven't parted my TWA yet. But if I did, I would part it on the side and slick it back with gel. Then I'd wrap it for the wavy effect. Sometimes I'll twist the edges into a "headband" or slick back my edges until they're wavy.

  • Anonymous says:

when my hair was shorter, i wore a part and i looked like Gumbi. not cute.

  • Anonymous says:

of course I part my hair! my braidouts and twistouts only look good that way to me. I either part in the middle or on the right side

  • ashley says:

My TWA is only complete with a side part. It adds te extra flair, that "natural swag" to my do. All in all, you should not be afraid to experiment b/c some things don't work for everybody. You have to fall into your natural groove. Trust me, I know… this is my second time going natural.

  • SPstyles says:

I have a TWA and i almost always side part my hair, then i shape my hair using a little gel and a pic to lift. Its always looks fab and i def dont look like "FreddyD." lol
Its the style that matters and the part placement, otherwise, you'll be fine :)

  • westNDNbeauty says:

    lol @ Fredrick Douglas

I started parting in the middle a couple years ago, now my hair lies that way by itself.

  • Anonymous says:

lolol@ looking like Fredrick Douglas. I thought the same exact thing this morning! I still part on the sides but with accessories. My twist outs are usually middle parts, just makes it easier to separate the hair that way.

  • Lori Ann says:

Now that I have BSL hair, I love to part depending on the style. I still think that an off-center part if my fave, though. I feel you on the Fredrick Douglas thing, I don't ever remember parting when my hair was shorter.

  • Chantel says:

Before I went natural I would have rather died than worn a center part in my head, but now its makes my twist outs and braid outs fall perfectly. Also when my hair starts to get bigger throughout the week the part disappears. Im still the queen of the side part though… what can I say Im a 90s baby and the "Aaliyah swoop" had a big impact on me :) I just add a natural twist to it

  • Anonymous says:

It depends the style i wear. If its a braid out i waer a middle part and i i bun then i don't part.
