I Big Chopped- Tamika

By January 27th, 202118 Comments
Meet Tamika…a gorgeous new natural sporting a fierce color!

I Big Chopped- Tamika
CN: When you first chopped, what were your thoughts and feelings? How do you feel now?
When I first big chopped, I was a little afraid to look into the mirror. I had gone to one of my really good girl friends who work’s at an Aveda Salon and she cut and colored my hair for me two days before my 28th birthday. I was looking for a change and had been transitioning for about 4 months when I decided I was ready to go for it. I was already rocking a short hair cut so I didn’t think it would be that much of a change. Now I am totally in love with it and you just can’t tell me I’m not fierce.

CN: How have you coped with the responses from your family and friends?
My sister and my mother totally hated it, but my dad was cool about it. My mom even suggested I wear wigs. Everybody else I know have been so supportive and thinks it’s awesome. I’ve even got a lot of really good feedback from strangers. It also helps that several of my friends are also transitioning or have recently big chopped so we have a good support system.

CN: What are your plans for your hair?
I am definitely looking forward to growing it out. I can’t wait until my hair is Bra Strap Length. I know it will be a while but I’m patient because I’m also excited to see all the different stages along the way.

CN: Do you find it necessary to ‘doll up’ your look to feel more feminine?
I was always into fun jewelry, especially earrings and even more so now. I have been wearing makeup more, but I don’t really feel like I need it everyday. I do make sure to have on earrings every time I leave the house.

CN: How do you keep your TWA moisturized?
I am definitely a PJ and buy pretty much everything I read about on www.curlynikki.com. For the most part I use raw Shea Butter oil, Organix Coconut Oil, and of course water.

CN: What products and techniques do you use to style? How often do you style?
I usually co-wash once a week and with HE Hello Hydration and use the Cantu Shea Butter leave in conditioner. I only shampoo bi-weekly and I use HE Hello Hydration or Pantene Relaxed and Natural. I re-wet my hair daily and use the Coconut or Shea oil to seal in the moisture. I watch YouTube videos daily for styling tips, and have been doing finger/combs curls lately. I plan to try other styles as my hair grows out.

CN: How do you preserve your look at night?
I wear either a satin bonnet or scarf every night. I plan on getting a satin pillow so I can let go of the bonnets.

Tamika you are beautiful and you got lovely hair.x

I am Deb, and new to Curlynikki, i also went for the big chop in Aug on my 24th Birthday and after years of relaxing/coloring/rebounding it felt like the greatest gift i ever gave myself…

I live in India and it was a shock to everyone in my husband family(Indians) my office colleagues, its like they thought they also owned my goddamn hair =/

I have been scared of cutting my hair and regretting it, but once i decided there was no turning back and i got the shortest pixie, in a sort of like Rosemary's baby vibe 😀 and you do look very feminine, i dont even bother with earrings 😀

However I am just like you, anxious about my new long curly hair crossing the bra strap length to be attained :)As none of my Indian counterparts or other nationalities that are around seems to be in the mood for the transitioning or the big chop, i count on you 😀 Congrats in the new look, you are fab.

Ps* Sorry for the long comment
