I was finally able to pull my face out of G Baby’s long enough to write this review! She’s so cute I wanna eat her…
As you all know, many old school, larger brands have hit the natural hair scene. Dare I say natural is becoming main stream?! These brands- while popular among relaxed divas, and tried and true for many of you back in the day- sometimes miss the boat. I tried Design Essentials. Disappointment. I heard about the Mizani line, and after a peek at the ingredients, have no desire to experiment. To be quite honest, I didn’t have high hopes for the KeraCare Natural Textures line either, but I was pleasantly surprised after receiving my free samples. By the looks of their ingredient lists, they definitely did their market research and developed some quality products… they must have heard that we’re a persnickety bunch!
Below, you’ll find my thoughts on the three products I tried.
Product Description: Gentle hair and scalp cleansing while neem leaf extract helps eliminate scalp bacteria leaving hair healthier. Shikakai proteins naturally moisturize and nourish the hair and scalp. Amla extract plus Argan and Abyssinian oils add natural shine to the hair.
*Use to eliminate styling product build-up.
*Use to soothe and clarify dry or itchy scalp conditions.
Ingredients: Aqueous (Water, Aqua Purificato, Purified) Extracts: Azadirachta Indica (Neem)1, Phyllanthus Emblica (Amla)1, Acacia Concinna (Shikakai)1, Cetrimonium Chloride, Cetearyl Alcohol2, Cetyl Alcohol2, C12-15 Alkyl Lactate, Polyquaternium-37, Propylene Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate, PPG-1 Trideceth-6, Glycerin1, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil1, Crambe Abyssinica Seed Oil1, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil1, Poyquaternium-10, Piroctone Olamine, Potassium Sorbate, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Fragrance/Parfum, Benzyl Benzoate.
My Experience: Excellent cleansing cream! I liken this to the CURLS cleanser that I adore. It has amazing slip, which aids in detangling, and removes buildup without stripping my strands. The consistency is similar to a light conditioner and is super easy to apply, and the sudsing action is mild but effective. Upon rinsing, my hair was soft and clean, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say it was moisturized. I definitely needed to use a conditioner afterward. Since the line doesn’t offer an instant conditioner, I used Aussie Moist to finish detangling and to provide moisture. I rinsed clean, got out of the shower, blotted dry, and applied the Leave-in.
Product Description: KeraCare Natural Textures™ Leave In Conditioner is composed of a unique blend of natural ingredients. Amla and Shikakai moisturize dry frizzy hair while wet and prepare the hair for styling into concise coils and curls. Then, botanicals plus Argan and Abyssinian oil add shine to hair and promotes proper moisture and oil (lipophilic) balance.
*Use to help seal cuticles and balance hair pH.
*Use to help preserve elasticity, strength and health of natural hair.
Ingredients: Aqueous (Water, Aqua Purificato, Purified) Extracts: Phyllanthus Emblica (Amla)1 and Acacia Concinna (Shikakai)1, Cetyl Alcohol2, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil1, Crambe Abyssinica Seed Oil1, Phytosterols, Betaine1, Citric Acid1, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Serenoa Serrulata Fruit Extract1, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract1, Propylene Glycol, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract1, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Extract1, Saccharum Officinarum (Sugar Cane) Stalk Extract1, Potassium Sorbate, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Dimethyl Stearamine, Fragrance/Parfum, Benzyl Benzoate, d-Limonene, Linalool, Methyl Ionone Gamma.
My Experience: Excellent consistency. Y’all know I’m a sucker for slip. This leave-in has it, along with a light, clean fragrance. I can’t speak for the moisturizing properties of this conditioner alone, as I used it along with the Twisting Cream, but I was impressed at how soft my finished set (Twist-n-Curl) felt.
Product Description: KeraCare® Twist & Define Cream allows you to maximize your twist ability with ease! When dry, hair will have the desired shape and coil foundation from this non-flaking botanical rich formula. Gives hair abundant shine imparted from Argan, Abyssinian and Castor natural oils and Amla extract.
*Use to get smooth, shiny, soft twists and twist-outs.
*Use to moisturize hair.
Ingredients: Aqueous (Water, Aqua Purificato, Purified) Extracts: Phyllanthus Emblica (Amla)1 and Acacia Concinna (Shikakai)1, Glycerin1, Acetamide MEA, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil1, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil1, Triethanolamine, Carbomer, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil1, Crambe Abyssinica Seed Oil1, Phytosterols2, Potassium Sorbate, Methylisothiazolinone, Fragrance/Parfum, Benzyl Benzoate, d-Limonene, Linalool, Methyl Ionone Gamma.
My Experience: I’m not a fan of oddly colored products, so I wasn’t over the moon to find that this cream is mauve. Give me a clear or white product any day, but a nuclear colored one… I take pause. I gave Herbal Essence’s purple and blue conditioners a chance, so I figured, what the heck.
The cream is wetter than other curl creams I’ve tried (more creamy than buttery), which made for a slightly easier application. It goes on heavy, and definitely stretched my curls (both during application and after drying). I applied this on top of the Leave-in, and allowed to dry overnight. In the morning, at take down, my hair was super shiny, defined, moisturized, and had an excellent touchable, yet firm hold. I was totally impressed… the combo gave me one of the best sets I’ve had in a long time and lasted 4 days. Good stuff!
Bottom Line: I was truly impressed! It’s a bit pricey, but probably worth it. The combo yielded a lasting hold, moisture, definition, shine, and hang time. Would I purchase? That’s always a tough one… the prices are a bit steep, but I’m thinking I’ll use these again in the future. Give it a try and report back here… I’d love to see what you guys think! I honestly feel that KeraCare’s Natural Textures line is what Design Essentials aspires to be. I’ll probably add it to my rotation.
i just did the big chop about 3weeks ago and bought this product and it is WONDERFUL!!! it really brings out the natural curls that i have in my hair and says soft and moisturized i really love this product worth the money.
I shampoo and condition my hair once a week. I use the leave-in conditioner and the twist and define cream. As soon as the twist and define cream hits my hair, it immediately coils without me doing any twisting! I get compliments on my hair every day! I just love it! I have been natural since December 2011. My husband encouraged me an I am so glad that he did.
Love love love this line. I was one of those girls that went faithfully to the beautician every 2 weeks when I was relaxed and then moved across the country and just didn't trust anyone with my hair. Meanwhile my daughter has the BEST curls every yet is raving about mommies long hair. So I took the plunge and started transitioning. I talked to my long time beautician and she said when i was ready to go natural I should use Keracare naturals line and she was SO right. Amazed that as soon as the leave in hit my hair IMMEDIATE curl action. I love everything the butter, twist and define cream, curls and coils. I also love that its numbered which helps you to use them in the right order. Saved my life!
You can get it much cheaper and larger sizes at Ensley Beauty's website. Enjoy!
I contacted the company and asked for samples and got to try the entire line. I love the cleansing cream as it does what its supposed to do and didn't leave my hair dry. The leave in was great and had good slip but like Nik I cant tell if it was moisturizing as I used it both with the twisting cream and or moisturizer. The moisturizer also has good slip and is very moisturizing but has no hold. The twisting cream is amazing with a lot of holding power without the crunch and has a lot of shine,
I am definitely a product junky, I like what kimmie0810 says about her "self-imposed" under 10$ rule! I will try that. 🙂 I also loved KeriCare when I was relaxed and I just purchased two items today for shine: Silken Seal and High Sheen Glossifier because when my hair dries it looks soooo dry. I will order the Clarifying shampoo, leave-in, and Twist 7 Define cream…I hope that I will refrain from buying ANYTHING else until I use what I have!
I have thick, dry 4c hair.. I stand by keracare natural textures : cream cleanser, leave-in, twist cream n butter cream.all the way. I unemployed yet i save for this products..they last long for me. you dont need to use alot. I tried another product by kynx n loved the smell n oil. but I did not see the growth like i see with Keracare. My local hair supply carries it.
I have the cream cleanser, leave-in and , curl defining custard…lovely products!!…
my curls are gorgeous and Ive been getting comments on how great my hair looks.
L.D.
I used my samples set of the shampoo, leave in, and defining custard to finger coil my hair and I LOVE this product!!!
I also had free samples when I purchased Bee-Mine curly butter, which I love also! I used the cleansing cream, leave-in and the hair milk(but on the 2nd day), it had my hair really soft and I used Bee-Mine curly butter along with those products to do my two strand twist and it came out soft define and it lasted me about 3 days. I will purchase Kera Care Textures again, but only the cleansing cream, I will search for another conditoner.
I got a sample set of the whole line when I asked for them at avlon and I only tried the leave-in and hair milk. I am speechless. When I say I have some tough stuff, I am not even joking. The slip is terrific but the softness afterwards is ridiculous. I hated transitioning until I used this product. For some odd reason my Shea Moisture just is not whats up anymore
I LOvvvveee this stuff. I have found my staple product for sure. I tried every dang on thing( Miss J( horrid, Carol D( Waiste of $) Jane Carte ( so so). I spend good money to be disappointed. Even Kinky( cant stand the fact of white stuff if mixed with other things)Ugg. I was depressed about my hair. So I stuck to Eco styler but it made my had crunchy and breaking a bit.So I saw Keracare. NOw what stuck in my mind was the fact that its Ph balance and the ingredients. Because all the natural stuff in the world wont help if your cuticles are wide open. But I bought Keracare shampoo(OMG Lovely and I have hard water) the leave in is Great. And I put on top the curling custard. I have soft(no shrukin) curls. Yes barely any shrinkage. Im in LOVE. 5 stars for me. Im not using nothing else for now maybe for a while. I just need them to come out with a deep conditioner to use my steamer with and Im all gravy. I love love love this product line. I have been natural four months and have type 4 hair. So this stuff works for shoo
Kay
I found keracare locally at a Hair n Stuff. So far I like what it offers my hair as a styler.
Um, that ingredient list is terrible, how could anyone think that is a natural hair care product? It is not.
JCP has keracare products on sale right now, buy one get one 50% off!
@Kimmie – You can purchase the line directly on the KeraCare website.
I am in love with this line… I use the Cream Cleanser, the leave-in conditioner, the twist and define cream and the butter cream… I actually ran out of twist and define cream and had to use the butter cream to finish my twist set and it worked perfectly… The products are inexpensive and I'm pleased every time! Good job, Kera Care!
I followed the same regiman Nikki did and absolutely love how my hair turned out! It was pretty expensive to purchase the three products, but well worth outcome.
How do you guys maintain you TnC at night? I tried a satin bonnet, but it just smashed my curls…
I'm in love with the twist & define cream, everyone should try it!!!!!!
Hmm. I will hold off on the CurlWise purchase then. They need a "tester" in the store lol.
I wish we could all get together & try each other's products & swap out the stuff that didn't work for us lol. I have a BOX of stuff I'm about to send to a friend in need & ask my FB friends if they want the rest. I need to get this stuff out of my face. And hope I'm not making room for more.
I love this post as you publish this post after your self experience. You advise after you got results that is the sweetest part of your story.Twist and define cream looks promising…..
I want to try this! Glad to see it has neem, amla, shikakai and argan in the products! Someone did their research 😉 I just purchased a new round of my favorite Ayurvedic products from hennasooq.com today— organic henna, organic amla, amla oil, shikakai and organic indigo– which I'm putting in my hair this weekend to tone down my henna for the winter. I'll have to try these products.

@Kimmie0810 I did but I didn't lol I guess it just didn't do it for me. Not enough defintion and its a tad bit greasy. I personally didn't like the feel.
Thank you so much for this review. I used to love KeraCare products and it's good to know that I can try this one on my quest to natural!!
Thanks for the review. I'm going to eventually try this line, but I have GOT to use up some of this stuff that I already have. I used KeraCare religiously when I was relaxed, but it didn't work too well once I first went natural. They also have a new sulfate free 1st lather shampoo (which I consider a clarifying poo) and hydrating detangling shampoo, both of which that I absolutely LOVE!! Dr. Ali Syed who is the chemist for Keracare is AWESOME! You should contact him for an interview. I've followed his blog for a while. With regard to finding these products, JCPenney is GREAT especially when they are running promotions, ULTA carries them, as well as the StyleSmart salons in Walmart.
It is great to finally read a review of these products that lists the ingredients.
Keracare Naturals may be more "natural" than regular Keracare but some of those ingredients get the side eye.
Thanks for the excellent review! I'm so glad KeraCare got a thumbs up, as I love their regular shampoo and conditioner. One question: how do you maintain your style for so long? I've read your nighttime routine, but can you tell me exactly what you did with this product? Thanks Nikki, this blog rocks!!
Stepanie I've tried the SheaMoisture. I love the masque, milk, reconstructive mist. I tried the smoothie last night & that is the 1st product that I was NOT crazy about. I don't know if I applied too much but my hair instantly turned white & it dried somewhat stiff. I ended up just doing chunky twists once the WNG dried. I'm about to take it down now.
What seems to give me moisture & definition is cleansing with Hair One from Sally's. I use the one for dry hair. Nexxus Humectress & Giovanni Direct leave-in are my "go to" leave-ins. I use them no matter what I'm doing to my hair. I've found for added softness & definition, if I put a little Herbal Essence Totally Twisted in–just a dime sized amount–it works great.
My favorite moisturizers are: SheaMoisture hair milk, Hawaiian Silky 14n1, the old SheaMoisture leave-in (amazon), Cantu shea butter leave-in, & sometimes Palmer's coconut. I'm still trying to find a great styler. I like the GF cream gel & ORS twist & lock gel so far. And Dabur Vatika enriched coconut oil has CHANGED MY LIFE! I love it. I have always been afraid of oil b/c my hair would look so stringy when I had a relaxer. But this stuff is the truth!! I pre-poo with it & add a bit to my hair before styling or to refresh. Or put it on my hands when I'm doing my night time chunky twists or taking them down.
I never have an issue with how my hair feels or looks. I am messed up in the styling game though. I just don't know what the heck to do with this!! Waiting for more length can't be the only answer.
JCP saves the day! Thanks lol.
NaturalSinceBirth: did u not like the CurlWise? I saw it in Hair Cuttery but it's against my "under $10" rule I've imposed since I do not need ANYTHING else!!!
To Kimmie and anyone else having trouble finding this line try JC Penney salons
Ut Oh….now I HAVE to have this! Im looking for a new styling option and KeraCare was my go to when I was relaxed. I still use the dry and itchy scalp grease for my dry scalp. Guess Im on the hunt today!
EMarie
My interest is peeked. I used KeraCare when I was relaxing and I really liked it so I think I will give their natural line a try.
Great reviews as always. So where are the photos of "G baby"?
Ugh. Pj-ism is arising LOL. I've been looking at this product line for awhile now. I might buy it for myself as a christmas gift. But I might not because alot of curl definers give me the same result.
Oh and @kimmie0810, I have the Redken CurlWise 14 if you want it.
Kimmie – girl thank you! I meant the triple nutrition…and I was wondering how it was going to work. I haven't used it yet. So far I have used the sleek and shine leave-in conditioner cream and I do like that. But I notice that the triple nutrition has glycerin in it, and I don't think my hair likes glycerin too much…at least not right now, b/c it tends to feel dry. I have used the shea moisture conditioner as a leave in (which has glycerin)and I notice that when my hair dries, it feels dry and a little brittle. I have added aloe vera gel and jojoba oil to the conditioner hoping that will improve the effect on my hair. So we will see.
Kimmie have you used shea moisture and if so, does it make your hair dry??
Nikki even my mom was like "u have gone too far w/your black n sassy behind!!" I moved home to finish school & have taken OVER her bathroom cabinets! I have to hide stuff. But I am DETERMINED to find that KeraCare! That & just 2 more things: Redken CurlWise 14 & Curls Whipped Cream (I am not satisfied getting the Goddess curl from Target). Then I'm DONE!!
Shameless Big Up to Jessi @ Jessicurl who is a DOLL! I don't have to buy anymore deep conditioners b/c she GENEROUSLY offered to send me free WDT & Too Shea & some sample sized stylers. I don't know her but I love her! LOL!
Stephanie I know u were asking Nikki but did u get the Triple Nutrition or a triple moisture? I have 3b/c hair too & thought the Triple Nutrition would work WONDERS but it stripped the heck out of my hair! Left it so friggin dry & just unpleasant to the touch–while still wet! I co-washed with it. Then did the 3minute treatment & it was still hard & brittle feeling. So I had to co-wash again & then do a deep condition to get my hair feeling soft again. Just a word!
Depending on where u got it, try it & take it back if it doesn't work. But otherwise, I'd say go with something else! The GF stuff my hair likes is the sleek n shine & moisture works. But I hardly use those anymore. If u live in VA I will give u ALL of it lol.
Your baby is the cutest baby ever!!! I have a friend that had a baby 2 days before you and she is where you are. Her baby is so cute, she is totally in love 🙂
And your hair is beautiful as always. Btw, my hair is mostly 3c/4a in the back and crown and 3b on the sides. I just bought Garnier fructis triple moisture conditioner and leave-in conditioning cream. I plan to use it for a twist and curl. Have you used it and do you like it for your hair??
I'm so confused!!! I don't k now whether or not to buy this or the CURLS line 🙁
lol @ kimmie… hilarious 🙂
Maybe we can convince KeraCare to do a giveaway!
I can't find the Twist & Define cream ANYWHERE! Target has some KeraCare products but not that. I checked a few BSS too. Where can I find it?
Lawd I got so desperate I bought something called "Black n Sassy" creamy set!! I was at my wit's end & just HAD to buy something to get over the disappointment. Needing it was a different story lol. I dunno if I want anything black n sassy in my hair lol.
sounds great, i want the cleansing cream 😀
