I agree with the above thread about being terrified. I went all natural about a month ago and I have no idea of what I should be using in my hair. I believe I'm a 4a/4b mix …….or something like that. I am not biracial and my hair gets super kinky, dry, and shrinks when wet. I just purchased a boatload of MJ products due to the holiday special. All I can do is try it at this point because its not like I can get my money back. Wish me luck!
Phew! As someone who is just transitioning, this thread TERRIFIES me! I can only hope I get lucky and find my products early, as I don't think I will be able to afford to experiment while still at University.
I am 11 months into my long term transitioning and I must confess I am a product junkie. LOL. But here is what worked and has not worked for me. I'm a 3C.
Did Not Work:
All Miss Jessie's products (gave to my sister n law who is a 4C. it was too drying for me)
Hawaian Silky (Completely dried my hair)
Organix Coconut Milk (dried out my hair, had to do a DT after)
Oyin whipped pudding and shine and define (it was really light. Loved the smell but I didn't see a benefit)
Proclaim Olive Oil shampoo and conditioner (hair HATED it. It was DRYING)
Karen's Body Beautiful (trial pack, didn't notice a difference oen way or the other)
Products that I love for my hair:
Shea Moisture (All products except for the yucca and plaintain shampoo. It's drying, otherwise my hair LOVES this product)
Oyin Greg's Juice (use sparingly otherwise your hair is sticky with other conditioners)
Olive You DC (mixed it with honey and EVOO)Left my hair very soft and it smelled GREAT
Oyin Honey Hemp
Kinky Curly Knot Today ( My hair LOVES this)
Curling custard (works on my edges when it's wet, and I only use a little. Leaves my hair soft)
Aussie Moist (detangler)
Tressame natural rich moisture (detangler)
Coconut oil mixed with jojoba, EVOO and honey work well as a humectant DT with heat
Nexxus Humectress (DC)
Still on the fence:
Eco-styler Gel
Herbal essence totally twisted
MJ baby buttercream, seems to work when I need something moisturizing for a quick ponytail
Carol's daughter (used to work, then stopped. Trying again)
So as I said a true product junkie. But more things worked for me then didn't. My hair loves moisture. But not anything that is heavy or too light. So i have figured out a good combination of things based on the styles I try. And for MJ, Karen's Body beautiful and Oyin I tried them all in trial sizes which I am glad for. But I have done product swaps with friends and family. I refused to throw anything away. I got two new bottles of KCKT out of it and they got two full bottles of the MJ Shampoo and conditioner. 🙂
I'm transitioning and have tried quite a few products. As an aside, I'm not sure of my hair type it's a wavy curly with natural shine, currently about 6" natural hair. Here's a list of what I've tried so far:
-MJ's curly pudding, sweet back treatment, curly meringue & baby butter cream. My hair hated all but the curly meringue. I used the baby buttercreme on my baby…great moisturizer initially but had gunky build up which made it a failure.
-CD's hair milk lite is only on my 2 year old but epic failure for me & the mimosa hair honey is too greasy
-Design Essentials was a total failure. I even followed the styling guide that came with the products. Curl definig gel made my hair unbelievable hard & the Curl Stretching Cream made it feel coated.
-KCCC was awful. I think I used to much. Paired with Knot Today and it was sticky. A travesty in the making. I tried using it for twist outs, roller sets, nothing worked. I may revisit it after the big chop to see if it makes a difference.
So, now I'm off to try some other products mentioned on here.
These posts a definitely eye opening! I'm still getting used to wearing my curls out instead of hiding them behind weaves/wigs. But I love Miss Jessies and Kinky Curly. I just started a site where I test products for reviews. So if you ladies want to give these products away that are not working please share the love! I am definitely open to trying new products that can tame my 4b/4c hair! www.CurlyGirlsWorld.com
I found this post today and after all of my pj behavior over the last year (I am 1 year natural),I have some pretty strong dislikes for my hair. So here goes the dislikes:
1. Anything from the Organix line – 1st wash and condish was ok, 2nd and future washes, hair is like straw.
2. Anything from Herbal Essences – no slip, hair left dry/parched
3. DevaCare One Condition – smelled good but didn't condition
4. Any of the Giovanni products – makes my hair shed/break like CRAZY!
5. ORS Replenishing Pak Conditioner – feels good (creamy, smooth, slip) going on but the after effects are rough. Also, do not like any of the creme hairdresses (Olive Oil, Carrot Oil, Hair Fertilizer). They are creamy but leave hair dry the next day
6. Anything from the Carol's Daughter line – hair felt stripped
7. Cantu Shea Butter Leave-in
8. Suave Naturals – Tropical Coconut
Again, these are products that did not work for my hair (type 4).
I love the organixs conditioners… pair it with a tablespoon of either jojoba oil or EVOO and my hair is moisturized to the utmost. i despised the HH conditioner; it left my hair feeling DRY!
MY LIKES:
LOREAL SULFATE-FREE EVERSTRONG SHAMPOO
YTC CONDITIONER
AUSSIE 3 MINUTE D.C.
ANY DEVACURL PRODUCTS
Any of y'all try to get rid of these, feel free to hit me up! i may have something you may like…. wyldcherry_7@yahoo.com
I am a 4a, fine-textured, and transitioning. Last relaxer: May 1, 2010.
1. Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Leave-in: Made my hair HARD AS A ROCK.
2. Elucence Shampoo and Conditioner: NOT moisturizing
3. Qhemet Biologics Burdock Root Hair Creme, and Alma Oil Pomade: Very product-y. Limited moisturizing benefits
4. Paul Mitchell The Conditioner: Again, very product-y. Gave it to my Dear Brother.
5. Hydrotherma Naturals: Not sure if anyone else has used this product line, but, again, made my hair HARD AS A ROCK.
6. Miss Jessies styling butters. Too heavy
7. Komaza Care Coconut Curl Creme and Moisturizing Spray – apparently, my hair doesn't like coconut
8. Bee Mine Curling Creme – products loaded with shea butter, coconut oil, glycerin, etc. not compatible with my hair
9. Oil rinses. I used coconut oil. Made my hair hard.
I CAN say that my hair has responded very well to jojoba oil.
It would be interesting to have someone on your blog, Nikki, make a guest appearance to discuss why so many can have different experiences with the same hair products.
CURLS Gel-les'c… This is so not right for my hair. I am rocking the TWA and needed a good wash and go product and this is sooo not the business. I live in Louisiana so it is humid all year round and my hair frizzes a lot. This product does nothing.
However, I am kind of liking Black Earth Products Curly Curl Cream and Kinky, Wavy, Natural Style and Shine. The main ingredient is shea butter so it seals my ends perfectly, preserves moisture, and defines my curls like I have never seen before. Gives hold and without being hard. NO CRUNCH! People are really sleeping on these products…
Aubrey Organics Honey Suckle Rose Conditioner
My hair HATED and still HATES it. I don't know what it is but it leaves my hair tangled and rough feeling. My hair is better off with whatever random Suave conditioner I use.
Cantu Shea Butter Leave In leaves my hair looking and smelling great but after a week I always have this weird residue when I'm washing it out.
Hello Hydration used to work amazingly well on my hair, but for some reason it will randomly act up and leave my hair feeling coated. Maybe it's the cones?
If anyone has any KCCC they'd like to get rid of feel free to send it my way lol (deborah.m.campbell@gmail.com)
Im not a big fan of Carol's Daughter's black Vanilla line or hair milk but I like the Tui Oil. Everyone is different, I guess.
Ive been using Miss Jessie's for a few years now and just began to notice the dry scalp, flaking, and white clumps. I get them with the curly pudding and stretch silkening creme. I guess thats my hair's way of asking for a change but i gotta finish this stuff first.
Herbal Essence Hello Hydration Shampoo. It just leaves my hair dry and knotted. The conditioner was ok but I would definitely not recommend the shampoo for my 4a hair.
Also, Mixed Chicks Shampoo left my hair feeling dry and stripped. MC leave in was alright. My scalp felt dry and itchy but it did an okay job as far as holding the curl better. DEF NOT WORTH IT and the prices are horrible!
Ladies, I have learned a valuable lesson, Keep it simple!I usually wear braids all the time. The last 3 months;I have been wearing my own hair. I have spent money on finding products as staples. The worst line I have ever tried is the Teliah Wajiid Line, this line almost ruined my hair( I was considering a 2nd bc! Giovanni Leave-in it left my hair soft and a film. CD Hair Milk Lite left my hair dry,Lawd! The things my 4a hair loves
Water mixed with oils,(olive, apricot,cd tui oil). Organixs Coconut Milk Nurishing Deep Conditioner, Orginixs Shea Butter serum. Dr bronners shampoo. The styling products, Miss Jessies curly buttercreme( you have to use alot) Designs Essentials Strecthing creme which is $10.00 less than the curly buttercreme. I want to get rid of the Teliah Wajiid Line, if anyone wants them or wants to swap: Anyone has shea moisture products they do not want contact me

Newbies be careful of youtube because some are very bias towards products, just use what works for you.
I've tried KCCC a couple times and it does nothing but leave my hair frizzy and stiff. Blended Beauty products leave my a hair a greasy, frizzy mess. Also, CURLS styling products do nothing for my hair, however I love the CURLS Quench Moisturizer on top of Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding. Their Sublime cond and Asian tea cond also work great.
I can't live w/o CJ Hibiscus Banana Honey Butta as a leave-in.
Still searching for a good sulfate-free shampoo, any suggestions…
Carol's Daughter Tui Smoothie and Hair Milk just coated my hair…UGHCK!
Miss Jessies Curly Meringue did not provide definition just coated my hair and made it flake
Miss Jessies Buttercream – greasy and heavy just makes my hair feel waxy (don't wanna throw away $30 so I resort to using it as a "gel" when I want a slick ponytail)
Deva Curl B Leavin dries my hair out unfortunately (I really like Set it Free though)
Jane Carter's products dries me out ridiculously (Moisture Shampoo, Leave-in, and Wrap-n-Roll)
I'm still experimenting trying to find styling products that work for my hair
Carol's Daughter hair milk. I love lemongrass smells in all incarnations so I've accepted that I only use the stuff for the smell. Hair sucks it up with no affect at. all.
Anything by Organix. I have tried every single one of the shampoos and conditioners and they were all a major FAIL. They have been sitting in a bag on my floor for the last three months because I just refuse to throw them away. If anyone is interested in them I'm more than happy to give them up.
This would have been so much more helpful if more people had posted their lengths and hair textures (if you can't say "3b" or "4b" then say "Rachel True" or "Macy Gray" lol). Besides the futility of expecting curls where there are none…there's also the real fact that some products that worked on shorter hair won't work as well once the hair grows longer, and vice versa. Past a certain length I can't do WNGs without a lot of detangling drama so if I'm going to use a curl/coil defining product, I have to use it as a twisting aid. Whereas with my hair short (as it is now) I can apply the same product to loose hair and see results (of a sort).
As a twisting aid, KCCC was amazing. I don't think I've found a product to match it for both hold and softness. However, as a styler for my short hair, I found it actually broke my coils up, which I attribute to the product's mucilaginous texture as well as my less-than-ideal technique. If I were making more money I would consider buying a jar but I can get better results more cheaply (see below).
On the flip side, cone-based products gave my longer twistouts good definition but also seemed to dry my hair out. However, to my surprise, I get much better coil definition on short hair with a cone-based leave-in. Yes, I find I'm actually using real shampoo these days, but my hair doesn't seem to be the worse for wear as a result.
All of this is to say: If you are new to natural hair, and you're intending on growing it out, rather than completely writing a product off, you might want to try revisiting it at some point in the future and/or try using it in a different way. And of course if all else fails, donate it to a women's organization… 🙂
Any Carol's Daughter product. It's just to heavy makes my hair feel yucky, oily and dry. Now as for Kinky Curly products. My hair loves it. For ladies who say Kinky Curly doesn't work for them. Pass it all to me.
It seems that a lot of the products that don't seem to "work" for certain ladies are the curl definers (KCCC/Miss Jessie's). Maybe they don't work because your hair isn't meant to be defined/will never look like a type three… jus sayin.
Disappointments: KCCC-Hated I; Sweet Hair Pudding by Ohm-Too expensive for the amount you get and the amount needed for an application, too watery; Shea Moisture Leave-In Conditioner-not enough slip, basically just too thick for my hair
Faves: Knot Today-at first I didn't like it, but then I tried it without the KCCC, and now I love it. I hate the price, but I love the product. Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Leave-In Spray-I love the smell, and it's great on my little one's afro puffs as a refresher. And my #1 is Afro Adie's Hair Butter-it's a product that I made for myself that has proven to define my curls and keep my hair soft.
Carols Daughter Hair Milk. So disappointed. I have tried it with every combination of products and alone and it did no more for my hair than my leave in conditioner alone.
However, I have to put my 2 cents about the people who said that Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding…
a) left hair feeling hard
b) left flakes
c) didn't smell good
d) turns white and foamy and feels strange.
I have experienced ALL of the above and still feel like Curly pudding is the BEST PRODUCT for my 4a/b hair. The trick is finding the combination of products that is right for your hair AND the Curly Pudding. I DOES leave flakes if mixed with certain conditioners. It DOES leave hair crispy if you don't put enough leave in or oil in your hair. I found my perfect combination of conditioner(Aussie moist), oil (tea tree&coconut combo) and the Curly Pudding. Also, if you don't like the scent, there is an unscented version!
If you have this product in your cupboard, try it again with different products! It is NOT to be used alone!
If you've already done this and REALLY hate it, SEND IT TO ME, LOL!
I never use expensive products. but a good friend of mines had the miss jessies curly pudding and she thought it would work better on my hair. Ha!It just made me stick to my dont by no expensive stuff rule! I think I will stick with my mix of Castor oil and labella gel for my twist outs. Only cost me 5 bucks all together! And I get satisfaction. I guess my frugalness comes at a good price. Good news is I didnt buy the product.
@Kimmy.. i'll look out for your info. www.sharronsguide.blogspot.com
that's the beauty of having so many product options! any other product swaps? looks like there are a lot of givers and receivers on this post for wanted/unwanted prducts 🙂 ps.. i love Aubry Orgaincs Honeysuckle Rose Kimmy!
Hear me loud and clear all: KINKY CURLY CURLING CUSTARD! The Knot today was good as a leave in (won't repurchase), but that KCCC. I mean I felt like a cotton candy afro. Never again!
I don't know if this counts, but THE DENMAN BRUSH!!! The same can be said for wide tooth combs! They do NOTHING for my hair as a start off point. I have a come that I pray I never lose because it works like a charm. Only AFTER I de-tangle with this comb can I even think about putting a wide tooth comb/Denman brush to my hair.
Wow 86 comments. Feeling Pretty passionate about this topic…Huh? This is only my second time weighing in. I usually read comments but never post….but I must say that Hair Rules is the worst product for me to date with many of the CURLS line coming in at a close second. For those of you who think that KCKT is your holy grail conditioner TRY BEAUTY BY DONNA MARIE'S MIRACURL DETANGLER AND CONDITIONER. IT IS A DREAM FOR MY 4DD Hair…. YES I SAID 4DD
To everyone not happy with products: I will be glad to take any Kinky Curly or Miss Jessies products off your hands (or really just any product). I have not found any particular product that I like and I am willing to try any new product.
The Cantu Shea butter worked great when I first started transitioning but during transition now fully natural, it leaves my hair dry and full of white residue (little balls). To anyone who wants to freecycle their no longer used hair products, please email me at sisterahall@yahoo.com. Thanks
My hair had a lot of breakage after using Kinky Curly Knot Today three times. I am not sure why. 99% of the people who have mentioned that they tried it seem to love it. My hair is so finicky for some reason.
I dont use any of the miss jessies kinky curly ms jane or any other product. i make my own and use conditioners like HH or suave for clarifying. I buy all the oils like olive, jojoba, avocado, castor, almond and grapeseed and make concoctions that fit my hair's needs. All of the commercial stuff, I can make and make it better!!!
Like many others – Kinky Curly Curling Custard – I tried when I started wearing my hair naturally, stopped and after a year or so and tried it again. Both times I was disappointed. My hair/head was wet for more than eight hours, when my hair finally dried if felt crunchy and I had more single strand knots than ever!
Hello Hydration leaves my hair hard and dry. I also don't like the Aubrey conditioners, they don't do much for me in terms of moisture. The only conditioner I am ever happy with is Giovanni Smooth as Silk.
Started out alternating Miss Jessie's Curly Meringue and Curly Pudding. Switched to Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic with Mixed Chicks and Vatika oil under it. Went back to the Curly Meringue and it made my scalp flake like Christmas. Same thing happened with Oyin Shine & Define and Whipped Pudding. Back to Uncle Funky, just started using the Extra Butter for chunky twist and curls.
I agree with all the KCCC Horrible
the Knot Today is great!!!!
Im finding the HEHH does not do all that good when it comes to detangling for me. The softness is there and i can certainly see more define curls. I love the Shea Moisture Smoothie the smell is heavenly curls I'm going on day 3 of my original twist and curl. Not to crazy about the cantu shea butter tho. I have the Aussie Moist that I'm dying to try any feed back on that ladies?
Kinky Curly Knot Today. I have tried it multiple times, but it leaves little white balls that look like dandruff!! So frustrating after washing, conditioning , deep conditioning and then using this , only to be left with what looks like dandruff!!. I cannot use it with anything but KCCC to attempt to get hold, but KCCC doesnt give the hold that I need. Plus, KCCC is so slippery and slimy!! Cant hold on to my wide tooth comb immediately after using it. It sucks, at least for MY hair.
–Kinky curly: I wasn't impressed–like someone said above, I felt like a poodle, and it dried my hair out quite a bit. The Knot Today doesn't do anything for my hair, but it works ok in my daughter's hair.
–Carol's Daughter leave-in products (hair milk, etc) just sat on my hair feeling greasy.
–Coconut oil, on wet or dry hair, with or without other products/oils/butters/whatever, just leaves my hair feeling hard. It's so-so in my daughter's hair.
Carol's Daughter Hair Milk: Yuck!
Cantu Shea Butter: Smells good but moisture..not so much.
Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding and Baby Buttercream: Left my hair dry as a chip!
Kinky Curly Knot Today and Giovanni Direct Leave In never did anything for my hair. Although Giovanni did give some curl definition my hair was not the least bit moisturized.
My hair love KCCC and KC Knots Today! It also love Miss Jessie's Curl Pudding and Curl Merringe and I use Uncle Funky's Curl Magic most of the time. My hair likes Mixed Chicks but left it a litle dry and had to use oil with it. I just order Hair Rules just to give it a try. I have 3C hair.
i'm transitioning. I find that with CD products a little goes a long way. I really like the Tui leave in and as a previous poster said the BV leave in makes a great base for a spritz (thats what I do)…I've had no luck with KCCC probably because I dont like twistouts – but KKNT and shampoo work really well. If anyone wishes to get rid of their CD products I'd love to take it off your hands – email me at agmiller05@aol.com
All Motions products (talk about greasy and cheap!) and Carol's Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey (so-so and kinda greasy). My hair seems to like products with water (no gunky mineral oil!) such as Silicon Mix Leave-In conditioner (pun intended). NOTE: still transitioning
@RoseofSharron – I will send my info to you. I have some Aubry Orgaincs Honeysuckle Rose that does nothing for me. I think it's a great idea to product swap 🙂
I would have to say KCCC did nothing for my hair or my daughters hair and I tried it several times. I love the KC Knot Today leave in, it is the best for both of our hair.
It's funny how products work differently for different people because I lovvvve Miss Jessie's curly pudding. It makes my hair soft, frizz free and defined. I haven't found anything else out there that works better and believe me I have been experimenting with other products.
Oh man,, I have too many to name – I've tried the following and did NOT like:
1. HEHH Conditioner
2. Carol's Daughter – The entire Black vanilla line, Marguerite's magic, Tui Smoothie (but I love the Tui oil)
3. V05 Conditioners
4. Paul Mitchell the Detangler, The Leave in conditioner
5. Deva Curl One Conditioner
6. Mane and tail (it was alright)
7. EcoStyler gel
What I'm starting to find out, my hair does not take to well to the products that contain those ingredients I can't spell or pronounce – exception: Garnier Fructis Sleek n shine leave in. So I have been avoiding anything that contains chemicals. Also, the conditioners have to be thick and creamy.
My current holy grail products are Oyin Handmade Honey Hemp Conditioner, Shine and define, Whipped pudding, Aubrey Organics Honey Suckle Rose, and the Garnier sleek and shine leave in (that's it!).
Kinky Curly Curling Custard & the Knot Today. Huge disappointment! Thank goodness that whole foods have such a awesome return policy because i was able to return everything and get my money back! Also I'm not a big fan of raw african shea butter! For some reason my hair doesn't like it, even when mixed w/oils! I loooovve shea moistures curl enhancing smoothie tho! Oh and even tho kimmaytubes leave in isn't marketed, it still has been the rave of youtube, but when i made it i did not like it at all! I was very disappointed!
for some of you who had issue with crunchy hair after using KCCC, try one last time using jojoba oil after you apply it. I had to try this product about three times before it worked. First your hair needs to be really wet, apply the knot today, then the KCCC in sections, then a little bit of jojoba oil and you won't have any cruchinnes. I've also tried it after following instruction the right way without using jojoba oil and it work really nice.
I didn't like Quemet, my hair didn't look right no the other hand, My hair loves Carol's daughter products.
This tell us how unique we are, not one product work the same on all heads.
Has anyone tried Shidanaturals products? I bought the cream moisturizer…Love it!!! and the gel…not so much. It left my hair dry and when untwisting my twist out it didn't want to untwist. It gave me a "stringy" kind of look. IDK. The curl refresh spray was nice and I plan to use it for the winter.
When I first started out, my hair DESPISED DevaCurl. Now I can't live without Devacurl One Condition. I realized I was using WAY too much before. A quarter sized amount is all I need for each side of my head for soft moisturized curls.
One thing my hair will NEVER accept is coconut oil or anything with coconut in it. It turns my hair into a shriveled tangled mess.
Miss Jessie's is another no-no. Doesn't do a darn thing for my hair but make me have to wash that crap out. Yuck…
KKCC and coconut oil does not do it for me. I like HE but found that it was what was causing me to tangle a lot. Cantu Shea is ok the first application but dries me out if I use it to remoist. Verdict is still out on the Afroveda butters, the conditioner was aweful.

I want to know how long do you give a product before you say it is not right for you
I give a new product at least two tries before deciding whether or not keep it or scrap it. Some things play nice with others and sometimes they don't, you have to find the balance. But if your hair ain't feeling it, it just ain't feeling it and you'll know.
Carol's Daughter Hair Milk and Tui something something spray! Both made my hair a hard, sticky mess. I may try these again and/or other of her products one day but after the hair milk, I was semi-tramautized by the hot-messness!
Coconut oil used to make my hair a strawed out mess but I've learned to never to use it as a styling aid and never to apply it to dry hair unless I'm using it for a hot oil treatment or a pre-poo. Now I love it!
Carols Daughter products and my hair do not get along. I think it's the sweet almond oil. My hair hates that stuff. It just sits on top of my hair and doesnt do a thing.
Cantu Shea Butter, I have no clue why everyone loves it. That stuff left my hair dry and brittle with the white flakes and residue to boost.
I tried the bee mine products at first my hair hated that too. I bought the moisturizing spritz and the curly butter. I gues I used too much on my braid out because it turned into a sticky greasy mess. Now I only use the spritz to seal ends. Curly pudding works great for slicking back edges.
To all of those who are having problems with the KCCC you could totally send it my way! I kept having hair fails with it when I first BC'd and after a while I put it down. Then maybe 6 months later I tried it again and got amazing results!
I made sure my hair was saturated with the KCKT conditioner before applying the product in small finger scoops to small sections of my hair. I did have some shrinkage but the end result was great. Annnd I managed to get 5 day hair when using the spiral spritz too 🙂 I was determined to make that stuff work and I did, mostly by following the instructions on the website. Also, my hair type ranges from 3c – 4c (my hair is literally a hodgepodge lol).
As for a product that I was utterly disappointed with that would have to be the Blended Beauty Curl Styling Butter. It worked okay when my hair was only about 2 inches long. Now my hair laughs at the stuff. I still have half a tub sitting there that I can no longer use 🙁
Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding left much to be desired. It definately defined my curls but dried crunchy. My hair was extremely stiff and as stated before, CRUNCHY. I am happy I only bought the trial size. I have a close friend who lives by the Pudding. Well, obviously everything is not for everyone.
I'm probably the first to say this product but Yes to Cucumbers Conditioner didn't really do anything for me. And Nikki I was so hopeful because of how much you and others have raved about it. It didn't give me the slip, and left my hair with that squeaky clean stripped feeling as if I'd used a regualar shampoo…big whant whant to that!
For those having issues with KCCC what is your hair type because I'm ranging from 3b to 4b in my head and I can't say I'm a huge fan of the results. I'm trying to figure out if maybe I'm not using enough or too much or if it's just not for me. But Knot- Today I absolutely love!!!!
Mixed-Chicks Leave-in was no good for my hair. It barely moisturized and left a white film in my hair.
Aloe Vera Natures Gate: Just started using it and i love it. It's so thick and has a great scent.
Aphogee: I tried it for the first time and idk how I feel yet. Afterwards my hair felt stripped but I'm going to try a few more times before I completely dismiss it.
But I'm looking for the best product to define my curls. Right now i'm wearing a shaped fro and sometimes twist outs but i'm looking to try something else. I want a product that will not only promote growth but has a good shine to it and also defines curls [it's going to be a task with my inconsistent textures] but does anyone have ANY suggestions at all?
carol's daughter black vanilla leave in conditioner. i'm sure i could get the same results if i put water and glycerin in a spray bottle. i use it like water to refresh my hair. totally not worth the $$. however, i recently threw some aussie moist in the bottle with it, added a little water, and VOILA! awesome leave in =-)
But wait you guys, there are still some new converts that are using the products that they used on their permed hair on their natural hair. I would like to share my experience with that, and my poison of choice was (drum roll) MOITIONS! That STUFF on my natural hair initially left it slick and very straight. With all the frickin CONES that they use in their products, it left my hair feeling crunchy, dry, and waxy!! It took about 3 months for that stuff to WASH OUT!! So for all you girlies transitioning PLEASE KNOW THAT YOU CAN NOT USE THE SAME PRODUCTS YOU USED ON YOUR RELAXED HAIR, ON YOUR NATURAL HEALTHY HAIR.
Aubrey's Organics Honeysuckle & Rose Shampoo. What a disaster! I used it only once and my hair was left stripped, hard and matted. I was in tears for hours as I tried to detangle all the knots that had formed. I lost a lot of hair that day. Never again!
Well I tried KCCC and I am not a fan…maybe I will try later when my hair gets longer…
Carol's Daughter Hair Milk…negative. That lemongrass is not the business…I use it from time to time and just mix it with something to rid myself of that odor..and it was so so for my hair…
i think the major fails of those two products converted me to a NON-PJ…
Sheamoisture deep conditioner my hair hated it, it was like it sat right on top of my hair. Anything from Garnier doesn't work for my hair especially the cream gel.
Miss Jessie's Curly purple product that smells of grape left my hair dry and coated thought my hair would never be completely washed of it.
Also MJ Curly Buttercreme does moisturize nicely but the smell was to overwhelming had to return.
One n Only Aragan Oil from Sally's didn't see any see nor softness with this, and also the smell blahh.. returned to store
I tried Carols Daughter Hair Milk about 3 or 4 years ago and I hated it. But I will try it again in the future because my hair was not healthy at all and I think that played a role in it not working to well.
Cantu Shea Butter – Left my hair dry and coated
Carol's Daughter – all of them! Let my hair greasy and dry. I used CD back in 2002-2003 and my hair loved their products then!
I think curly products just aren't for my head. The only "curly" product I have found useful is the Knot Today conditioner. All the gels, puddings, spritzes etc. are just too much for my hair. After the leave in, I just need a light oil.
Kinky Curly Curling Custard. I've tried it a few times and it's too thick and heavy and leaves my hair hard and crunchy. Don't like Carol's Daughter's products either.
SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. Yuck. I used it to rock my chunky fro and my hair was a puffy mess. It looked dry and seem to have a white film glowing on it. I used it on dry hair. I will probably try again on wet hair and see what happens.
Tigi Moisture Maniac, CJ Curl Assurance, Yes to Carrots & Garnier Triple Nutrition conditioners. All left my hair stiff & tangled.
I later compared these products & saw that they all have Behentrimonium Chloride/Methosulfate in the ingredients which I now vigorously avoid. Oh well…
KCCC left hair dry and to much shrinkage.
Hello Hydration Conditioner left my hair dry as a bone
Tresemme Moisture Rich Conditioner, it's thick but stripped my hair
Patene Restorative Mask Conditioner, smelled good but it didn't do anything for my hair.
AOHR Shampoo was a big fail for me. I tried it twice and my hair feld dry brittle and hard after washing. I wish I could have returned it. The conditioner is really good though.
@kimmy— seriously, send me ur info and ill send you my kinky curly curling custard! I just purchased about a month ago, and its just sitting in my closet. Wouldn't it be nice if we could all do a product swap!?

1. Dickey's "Hair Rules" styling creams. My hair is penspring coily. It left my hair stiff and dry. Tres disappointed.
2. Miss Jessie's stretch silkening cream. It lies. Didn't stretch it, didn't silken it either. Don't use this on kinkiest hair – it will not hold and it will flake off into fine little balls when manipulated.
3. I like the theory behind Qhemet's AOHC, but it does feel sticky tacky.
Hello Hydration does nothing for my hair. I've used it two different times with and without heat, and my hair feels dry and brittle while wet. You can only imageine how dry and crunchy it left my hair when after it dried.
I've had great success with Garnier Triple Nutrition conditioner and leave in conditioner. I'm looking for a new product though, because their produts contain parabens.
Miss Jessie's curls and kinky curly curly custard! My hair simply did not like either of them! Both were an epic fail for me… as I'm reading some of the post, some products that worked great for me, were horrible for others and vice versa. Thats why its so nice to have variety in the curly products bc hair is so different!
Oyin Handmade Frank Juice. My hair was a hot sticky nasty mess!!! I was so disappointed. I really thought I would be able to use it to refresh my curls for a few days, but not so much. My hair felt horrible. Very sticky and yucky. I can't explain it any other way.
Also, Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding. Although it really defines my curls, it weighs them down and leave a nasty, slimy film in my hair. I HAVE to wash and restyle everyday otherwise I get thick white stuff all in it no matter how much or hoe little I use, regardless of whether my hair is wet or dry. 🙁
Maybe I can try these two products again after my hair grows more. I think I gave them both a fair chance, simply because I refused to throw them out due to how much I paid for them. LOL. 😉
I used DevaCurl B'Leave-in and it made my hair feel SOOOOO dry and stiff. I put it in damp hair that had a little conditioner in it and it instantly sapped the moisture out of my hair. I tried it again on naked hair with the same results. I still have a (mostly) full tube in my stash that I'm trying to give away! Yuck!
KCCC. I used it a couple of times and my hair came out hard. I maybe didnt have the right about since that seems to be the key. I think having to put that much effort into the right amount is just too much work for me right now. I also have Ms. Jessies sample pack and if im honest i need to say that i have not given that a fair chance yet. Maybe i will someday, hopefully it has not expired. I think ill try it this weekend.
DevaCurl AnGEL Light Hold Defining Gel Hair did not work for me. Or rather it work edfor me if I use lots of it and at $17/bottle, I was using way too much for the price. It also dryed my hair out too much. I like the rest of the DevaCurl products where less really equaled more but not AnGEL.
Kinky Curly Curling Custard (used again today and I look like a poodle) and anything Carol's Daughter! My hair just doesn't like either line and is starting to hate Miss Jessie's too. They are all too "producty" and leave me hair feeling less than great. Cleo (my hair) prefers good old water, very light use of Eco Styler Gel and Qhemet Biologics Burdock Root Butter Cream as a moisturizer (not all used together obviously).
Miss Jessie curly pudding is a no no for my hair. I don't know if it was too heavy or what, but I get better results with a regular wash n go with no product applied.
Jane Carter's Leave in conditioner. It was way too watery and it left my hair hard and brittle with no moisture at all. I used it as
a base for my glycerin mix. I did not just want to throw it away so I found another use for it.
Miss Jessie. I bought a bunch of her products a few years ago & ended up giving them to my bestie for my god daughter's hair.
I also LOVE SheaMoisture & finally got the curl enhancing smoothie b/c everyone seems to love it. Too heavy or thick or something for my hair. It went on white & left my hair feeling kind of hard. I don't like the smell either. I might revisit it in summer when it's more humid & my hair is longer.
Kinky Curly Curling Custard. Ugh! Once applied, my hair seems to laugh while saying, "Hmph, you expect me to curl with this gunk coating me? Nope, try again." LOL! My hair does not positively respond to this product. Kinky Curly Knot Today? Yes. The Curling Custard? Absolutely not.
Kinky Curly Curling Custard. I've tried it off and on now for almost 2 years and still can't make it work. I have the huge tub of it sitting in the bathroom as of constant reminder of my PJism. However, the Kinky Curly Knot Today is one of my all time favorite products. No other conditioner (regular or leave-in) give me the moisture and softness of KCKT. Lately I've been using it in modified versions of the KimmayTube leave-in recipe.
Cantu shear butter leave in! i have 4b hair and my hair just felt dry after using this and im also not a fan of the smell or the texture.
MJ was a serious disappointment! All that money for no results. and Tresemme 4 curls cant remember the name my hair was so dry…and no life to it

Where do I begin? LOL!
I'm with all of other KCCC fails. Doesn't do anything for my curls at all.
NO CRUNCH! People are really sleeping on these products…
for me is definatly Herbal Essences Shampoos and Conditioners. Tried the whole range, none worked
Cantu Shea Butter Leave In -leaves too much build up.
To the poster who doesn't like Organix, i'll take them off your hand.
email; adetude2007@yahoo.com
Im not a big fan of Carol's Daughter's black Vanilla line or hair milk but I like the Tui Oil. Everyone is different, I guess.
Ive been using Miss Jessie's for a few years now and just began to notice the dry scalp, flaking, and white clumps. I get them with the curly pudding and stretch silkening creme. I guess thats my hair's way of asking for a change but i gotta finish this stuff first.
CD tui leave in conditioner, My hair hates it. It was dry and brittle, but my sons hair seems to like it. There shampoo is OK for me.
I want to get rid of the Teliah Wajiid Line, if anyone wants them or wants to swap: Anyone has shea moisture products they do not want contact me
afrodiva29@yahoo.com

Newbies be careful of youtube because some are very bias towards products, just use what works for you.
@RoseofSharron – I tried to post my info on your site, but it's not working. You can email me at legalkd23@msn.com. Hope you come back 🙂
I've tried KCCC a couple times and it does nothing but leave my hair frizzy and stiff.
Still searching for a good sulfate-free shampoo, any suggestions…
anyone wanting to get rid of their kinky curly custard can give me a shout.
Piggybacking off Anonymous 11/17 9:50 am:
Sally's GVP Conditioning Balm: Compare to Matrix Biolage Conditioning Balm.
The first time it felt great but each time after was sheer disappointment. Dry, tangled and rough hair- even with a cool rinse afterwards.
With all of this being said, I think there definitely should be a curly nikki product swap developed.
Giovanni's Smooth as Silk Shampoo (awful)
Shea Butter and all products with a high concentration of shea butter.
Yes to Cucumbers Leave-in (dry)
at the risk of sounding redundant KCCC! yuck… such a fail! But I'm not much into wash n go styles because of the shrinkage so that may contribute.
also, Shea Moistures deep conditioning hair mask… bleh!
For those of you who had bad results with the Miss Jessies products… I'll take that for ya! 🙂
Ms Jessies hair pudding… I was so pissed i had to rewash my hair before it even dried all the way. good thing it was only a trial size!
Thanks
-Suave Coconut Conditioner
-EcoStyler Gel
-Veggie Glycerin
They all left my hair feeling icky. *shivers*
My hair had a lot of breakage after using Kinky Curly Knot Today three times. I am not sure why. 99% of the people who have mentioned that they tried it seem to love it. My hair is so finicky for some reason.
Kinky Curly Curling Custard- HATED IT!
Hello Hydration- HATED IT (left my hair rough)
Shea moisture curl enhancer was such a flop, made my hair look like a mat.
Jane carter leave in is the worst ever….stinky!
Eco styler was a waste of money.
Intelligent Nutrients Hair Treatment, it says for highly textured hair to use as a leave-in; my hair felt like some crunchy fries, it was just nasty.
I agree with others though I love KCCC!
Kinky Curly Knot Today and Giovanni Direct Leave In never did anything for my hair. Although Giovanni did give some curl definition my hair was not the least bit moisturized.
Carol's Daughters products, Hair Rules, Cantu Shea Butter, Shea Butter, Hello Hydration, Giovanni and VO5 were all major fails!
Kinky curly custard works well for curling my hair. I love the knot today as well. Nothing in the carols daughter line works for me.
Jane Carter shampoo and condition..talk about crunchy and dry hair..Hate it!
for some of you who had issue with crunchy hair after using KCCC, try one last time using jojoba oil after you apply it.
I have been using KKNT and I love it!! My hair is a little greasy with KKKC. I like how it makes my curls pop though.
Jane Carter's products did not work for me. Neither do Carol's Daughter's products. The She Moisture products left my hair feeling and smelling funny.

Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Shampoo and Smoothie. The Black Vanilla hair milk was ok as a daily moisturizer on my TWA.
Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic…..back and forth with this one. It takes a while to learn how to use it and the right amounts.
Some love coconut oil, but any product with coconut oil leaves my hair brittle and dry. Anyone else respones to coconut oil in this manner?
I'm probably the first to say this product but Yes to Cucumbers Conditioner didn't really do anything for me. And Nikki I was so hopeful because of how much you and others have raved about it. It didn't give me the slip, and left my hair with that squeaky clean stripped feeling as if I'd used a regualar shampoo…big whant whant to that!
Maybe there's a better way to use it?
Cantu Shea Butter left a white residue on my hair….Apply while wet…ugh…I liked it during trasition but now all nature just not the biz…
Flop: Miss Jessie's, Carol's Daughter, and Kinky Curly Curling Custard. MAJOR FAIL!
that's shine nor softnes with the One n Only Aragan Oil, none was had.
After the leave in, I just need a light oil.
i'm with kimmy… KCCC is a HG for me, so send them my way!
Jane Carter's spray leave in: seriously? a spray??
HEHH: i like totally twisted better
Shea Moisture Smoothie: i liked the moisture, but it made my hair so frizzy 🙁
Carol's Daughter Hair Milk Shampoo: just, no.
Cantu Shea Butter Leave-in my hair hates it! It revolted when I used it…
Dear @Cheryl, it will be still be "a puffy mess" and "dry and seem to have a white film glowing on it"
It's moisturizing like a dream, but uh-uh for me!
LOL!
Miss Jessies Curly Pudding is not for me. I've used it twice and both times it left white flakes in my hair.
Hello Hydration was a big fail for me. Didn't detangle as well as I hoped and my hair actually felt hard instead of hydration.
With some of these products, I've realized that less is more. Specifically with Oyin's juices and CD's Hair Milk, they work better if used sparingly.

Yuck!
Eco Styler Gel is okay. I was expecting my curls to really pop. I just bought a Denman brush so I will see what it looks like after using the brush….
LOVE Kinky Curly Knot Today! It's my FAVE CONDISH!
jane carter's leave in. so watery. and left my hair feeling stringy and just… weird.
Jane Carter leave in conditioner- dirty water and the smell is AWFUL.
Shea Moisture Hibiscus smoothie- not the business
oops i meant the right amounts.
I love the Knot Today however.
Carol's daughter hair milk (original version) and I do not get along. Besides the smell (hated it) it left my hair feeling very waxy and dry.
carol's daughter shampoo! my hair felt gunky and yucky afterwards 🙁

To all the ladies that Kinky Curly Curling Custard doesn't work for….. I'll take that off your hands for you 🙂
I want to know how long do you give a product before you say it is not right for you
DevaCurl AnGEL Light Hold Defining Gel Hair did not work for me.

Kinky Curly Curling Custard. I think I used one good finger scoop…and it's still at the bottom of the cabinet. Maybe I didn't apply it right…idk.
@ nerdography
I felt the same way at first w/ C.D. shampoo, but after I diluted it 1 part shampoo to 3 parts water, it works great!!
Carol's Daughter Shampoo, my hair hated it. It left it dry and matted. I was so sad, and took hours to detangle my hair.
Also, Miss Jessie's products. I used the Baby Butter Creme. It left my hair feeling tacky, I ended up washing it out.
