big chopped a couple weeks ago, 7 months into my transtion :-)..actually my younger sis cut it for me (she's 15 lol) because I had a hard time seeing the line of demarcation. She was the one who pushed me to it because she saw how much I was struggling with the two textures..I LOVE MY HAIR! I'm still snipping straight ends here and there but it's no biggie.

I just BC'ed on July 16 and I'm loving it!!!! I've been in transition for about 6 months and couldn't take it any longer. So I made an appointment and chopped off all relaxed hair!!! I feel fantastic!!!! Can't wait until I see growth and see what styles I can do to my hair. Any of you ladies reading this and are thinking about doing the BC….go head and do it, you won't regret it. Not only that the wash and gos are the best thing ever!!!! Be brave and embrace what GOD gave you!!

I plan to BC on August 26, 2011. This day is very important to me because my mother's birthday is August 30, 2011. She passed away of Cancer on November 3, 2003 and she lost ALL of her hair. She said that hair is not important! As long as she has her life! And she fought VERY hard too! We all should appreciate what GOD had blessed us with and stop trying to be like someone else! I am very anxious to BC and I am wondering can I hold out until August 26th! My last relaxer was on March 5, 2011 in preparation for my wedding on March 26, 2011. I am so ready to enjoy ALL of my natural curls! I have always had long hair except for when I got it cut in 2006 into a bob when I turned 32. I may be doing my BC sooner than later! :0)

I BIG CHOPPED FEB 18TH 2011! MY FIRST EVER. I CUT IT ALL OFF AND REALIZED I HAD GRAYED QUITE A BIT. I HAVE TO SAY THAT MY FIRST REACTION TO MY NEW LOOK WAS NOT LIBERATION BUT HATRED. I HATED THE WHITE HAIR, IT WAS SO SHORT AND MY FACE SEEMED SO…EXPOSED! I RECOILED AT FIRST GLANCE. IT TOOK ME A LONG TO TIME TO WALK WITH MY HEAD UP WHEN I WENT OUTSIDE WITH IT! I AM NOW THREE MONTHS IN AND I HAVE TO SAY I DON'T MIND LOOKING AT ALL OF MY FACE ANYMORE. I LOVE THE CONVENIENCE OF NOT HAVING TO WRAP AND CURL AND COLOR! AND MY SILVER/GRAY/BLACK HAIR IS NOW A GREAT CONVERSATON STARTER!!! I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO MY 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY THOUGH! MY
HAIR HASN'T BEEN THIS THICK AND STRONG SINCE I WAS A LITTLE GIRL! AND NOW THAT I'VE FOUND THIS SITE I HAVE EVEN MORE SUPPORT FOR MY JOURNEY.

I BC'd Today I feel sooo good This is my 3rd big chop. My last one was 16 years ago the first one was 1982 I love the way it feels. My hubby is cool with it thats all that matters to me.I had a cute little pixie cut but there was too much perm damage. Natural is better for me. I want to keep this look for a while. >I just love this site a place for Black ladies to share information about our hair its
    wonderful !

  • Divinestylez23 says:

Congrats ladies! I did my BC on yesterday, I am so stoked with the new look ( the feeling of liberation ahhh!) I am sporting a fade so of course I am still a little insecure about what people say but with time I know the journey will pay off. Thanks so much for the support-HHG

After much debate over the pros and cons of BC'in I've decided to go ahead and make it happen come November 2011. November will mark a little over a year of natural hair for me. I wanted to do some transitioning before I go ahead and let go of my tresses.

  • Lillyput's Hut says:

Hey girls. I have been so encouraged by this blog page. I have been transitioning for 7 months now and want to do the BC but I don't know how short my hair would look and if it would make any difference to wait for one yr.

  • Anonymous says:

I gave myself the date of June 2011 to do my BC. I can do it anytime for then but it must be done by June 2011. I'm looking forward to seeing what my hair (without the permed ends) really looks like. I'm excited, but nervous (the reason for the deadline). I'll keep you posted 🙂

  • Anonymous says:

    Heck yea..
I just did it myself a couple of hours ago!!!

In October 2010, I decided I was tired of getting perms and was going to go natural. I was going to try and wait until March 2011 to BC my hair because I wanted to make sure that I had enough new growth to give me a decent TWA.

As more and more of my new growth started to show I decided to get kinky twists because I was in school, finals were coming up, and I did not really want to have to worry about fussing with my hair during that time. I also heard that the twists were a good protective style to give my hair time to grow.

I was impulsive and decided to BC my hair yesterday. I went to my beautician and told her I wanted to cut off all the permed hair. I was little nervous, but no where near as nervous as I thought I would be. I must say that I am really digging my short hair.

I just want to thank CurlyNikki and all the other people on this site for all their insight and support for those going natural. I'm hoping just for my hair to grow and be healthy.

  • CrAZy5470 says:

I'm gonna try to BC next month, after 9 months of transitioning. I don't know too many other natural teens in my community so in addition to it being my personal choice I want to explore the natural beauty 🙂

  • Duchess52 says:

Congratulations to all Big Choppers and those who have decided to chop. I chopped last night, because I couldn't wait any longer.
After my decision to go natural in November 2010 I
did mostly very thin braids that I Bantu knotted, but I wasn't very pleased with the result.
There was too much straight hair and I wanted it gone…..Now it is and I am very excited.
Thank God for CurlyNikki. I have been reading for days and with all the new information I was ready.
I live in Curacao, former island of the Netherlands Antilles and although I come across a lot of sisters….they all have relaxed hair and most of the products are for relaxed hair.
Have not been able to find any Shea Butter as yet.
Can't keep my hands out of my hair….it feels so soft…..I LOVE it

  • puff says:

i did my second BC five years after my first on new years eve! 2010 was a pretty rough year, but i felt like i grew so much. i wanted to start 2011 with a fresh slate and a new perspective both inside and out =) this is the shortest my hair has ever been and i LOVE it. i haven't decided if i should grow it out or keep it short yet, but for now i'm loving having a totally new look and the surprised looks on people's faces.

  • NaturallySonja says:

I BC'ed December 17th after transitioning 6 months and it was the most liberating experience. I'm so proud of my TWA because it's mine and chemical free. I love it. I'm learning all new and different things about my hair. While transitioning I was a product junkie and now that I'm all natural, I'm learning that less is indeed more. I BC'ed because I was frustrated dealing with two textures and I grew to hate the relaxed ends. The burden is gone. I've started 2011 AU NATURAL. Naturally me, NaturallySonja and that's the way it is. 🙂 Yay!

  • CSI says:

I just want to congratulate all who are big chopping. You will never regret it and the year will pass by so quickly, you won't feel it. I did mine at the beginning of 2010 and I now am 13 months post relaxer. My hair when pulled straight in the back is touching my collar bone. Crazy, huh? the sides are touching my shoulder. Doing the big chop affords your hair to breathe and grow faster. Don't get discouraged with dry hair and undefined curls at first. It took me about 9 months before I could get my hair in tip top shape and now NOBODY CAN TELL ME NOTHING!!! I'm loving my hair. Henna has helped keep it strong. hennaforhair.com is a great place to learn about it and there's a forum for it here on curlynikki.com and naturallycurly.com. Another thing that sped up my growth in the last 2 months is Monistat Nitrate and Biotin vitamins. Some think it's crazy but it's giving me 1" of growth a month instead of 1/2" a month. if I would've known that last year, my hair would be that much longer. of course, each person has to decide for himself and do the research. do your research and condition, condition, condition. I'm so happy for you all and wish you the best. You'll never feel better about yourself after all of this 🙂 Enjoy being natural…

and I had my stylist do it for me, even though my girlfriend was telling me to go to a barber.

  • Anonymous says:

I chopped on the 30th, but plan to chop again some time soon to get the rest of my ends off. It looks great now but I think I could stand to go shorter! I love the look so much.

  • Anonymous says:

    I'm choppin this weekend!

  • Anonymous says:

    6 years wow congrats
I plan on doing the bc the day after my high school graduation in May. That will be 13 months of transition for me and it is really hard to not cut my hair I'm so anxious.
    Good luck to everyone.

    Congrats ladies!!

This month makes it 6yrs since I've been transitioning. I've been clipping my hair every now and then, and my hair is on my shoulder. I think its time I do some form of chopping so March I will be cutting the ponytail off and hope to rock a fro for the first time 🙂

I've always wanted to do a big chop but I am so self conscious when it comes to my hair, I've never really rocked a natural look, I'm always rocking my hair flat ironed and in a ponytail, but ever since i found this site and all the stories and tips, I've been a bit more confident with my decision. Cant wait!

I go to the salon tomorrow to start the process of unlocking my locs. Lol! I am so excited I have taken down about five of my locs myself, but its hard work. I cannot wait to see my hair when its done. I have been growing my locs for 5 1/2 years. I went through a lot personal things in 2010, and I just felt it was time for a change. Plus, I graduate in May with my MSW, so I thought now was a good time.

  • Unknown says:

I plan to big chop in march. I have been transitioning since July. I am getting very anxious though. I don't think I can last that long

  • All That Chit Chat says:

Plus, I have this sensory issue where I don't like hair on my neck and ears. I feel light and free when my neck and ears can breathe. I know. Strange. LOL

One more reason: I think short hair is very sexy and professional-looking.

I've BC'd about 15 times. Just did a Mini Chop two days ago! I love it because short hair goes nicely with my face and the shape of my head.

When my hair is shorter, it's always looks so shiny and healthy and needs very little maintenance.

  • Closet Confections says:

I definitely plan to Big Chop later this year, but I haven't decided on a date yet. It could be as early as this summer or I may wait until right before my birthday in October. I've been transitioning for a year now, and it's about time for these relaxed ends to go! I'm super excited! 🙂

I plan on doing the BC tonight!!! I am sooo excited about it!!! I wanted to wait a lil longer but I decided that the longer I wait the more I might be prompted to go back to the creamy crack!! I have been transitioning for 4 months now and I think that it is time to get this show on the road!! Im ready to be free from all that has been weighing me down and I want to start with my hair!! I have been educating myself on natural hair and the more I find out about having natural healthy hair the more excited I get about it!!
I will keep everyone posted on my natural hair journey, starting with my BC!!!
    Happy New Year Natural Divas!!!!!

I BC'd on Dec 30, 2010… while taking down my braids. I am still getting use to it but I definitely don't regret it. I transitioned for 5 months prior to my BC while on a deployment. I was trying to wait until Feb. 2011 but I wanted to start something new for the new year. I am excited to really unveil the true me and learn a whole lot of styles.

  • Anonymous says:

Congrats to all the ladies with new styles for the new year!! March 2011 will mark my 1 year mark of my transition. I initially had a goal of 24 months until I cut but I already know I am not going to make it. Right now, I have set June as the chop month which will be about 15 months of transition. We will see if I make it that long! But even if I dont I definitely see a chop in 2011 for me!

  • Unknown says:

Happy New Year everyone! I did the BC on December 23rd after transitioning for 7 months. I am loving my new look!

Congrats to everyone!!! I plan on BC in May, which marks 1 year transitioning for me.

I am cutting it all off tomorrow night after work. My son is in barber school, so he will do the honors! I have been transitioning since October and had originally planned to cut in Feb. I can no longer deal with the two textures, they are driving me insane. I have been natural before; but relaxed again due to frustration and the lack of knowledge. This time, I have read everything I can get my hands on and have gotten prepared by purchasing products that I need so that I will be ready and able to keep my hair healthy, moisturized and looking its best.

I am probably going to have about an inch of hair after all the relaxed ends are gone. I love short hair and I really want to experience every stage of the process. I think it will also help me to get to know my natural hair better.

My decision to go natural happened so ironically. I was searching youtube for information on how to keep my relaxed hair looking great without the use of heat. I liked the look of the curly hair and then I realized I had naturally curly hair, too. Why was I trying to make my hair appear naturally curly when it already was? Right then the decision was made, and tomorrow night it's on!!!

Congradulations women of color on big chopping. I big choped yesterday at 5:30pm. I took my micros out which took 4hrs. and big choped it only took 20min.Im still trying to get use to the new look. I went out today wondering if people was looking at my hair, it felt odd. Happy New Year Women!!! New begining. New hair

  • Lisa says:

I big chopped last year Feb. 21st, but I loved my hair faded and lined so I never let it grow past a twa. I colored my hair at the end of August, and I called myself cutting it out yesterday and beginning my hair growth. I should have gotten it done professionally because with my mom's help it was a disaster. I don't know if I should just get it shaped up on this year's Feb. 21st or cut it off to start completely over? Any encouraging words would help right now.

  • curlyGurly says:

I was planning on Big Chopping in February which would mark my 2 year anniversary of going natural…But I am getting a little anxious and dont think I am going to be able to wait! So we shall see…But whenever i do I'll be sending in the pics to be a BC post on curly nikki!!!

  • Sweet D-Marie says:

I did the BC on December 27th. I could not wait for the New Year. After wearing braids for a year, so I would not have to deal with transitioning, I could not take it any more! I LOVE my TWA! I have alot to learn about care and products, but I am looking forward to it all.

  • Que says:

I plan to BC at the beginning of February 2011! I am very excited, but also nervous! I've been stalking this site for a month now, which has gotten me even more excited about my decision!

  • b. says:

Wow, Anonymous 2:24, that's powerful stuff! Congrats to all ya'll 🙂

You almost make me want to go short again! Almost.. 😉

My grandmother passed last April and I began transitioning a week later (on her birthday). My grandmother was a quadriplegic for over 50 year, but she never once let ANYONE tell her what she could or couldn't do. She lived a full life despite her condition. I plan to BC this year on her birthday.

  • K Jordan says:

I'm going to big chop by June 2011, the one year anniversary of my last relaxer

  • G Jones says:

Congrats Amanda!!! I big chopped December 28th because Icouldn't wait any longer. I have transitioned since August and I have a twa that I cut in the bathroom and it turned out pretty great! I feel free and excited. When I finished I knew that I had made the right decistion for me and my life. New year, new and bette me!

  • Amanda says:

Yes definitely! I chopped yesterday on New Years! I feel so free! I was so excited…I couldn't even sleep last night because I was so excited about my new hair.. I was basically going for a cute little curly fro, or a twa, or something like that. As soon as I got permission from my mom I took the scissors and just chopped away. I've been wanting to big chop for several months and now that I finally did it yesterday I feel amazing! I look and feel like a whole new, different person. I love it! I'm so happy I big chopped. New year, new hair!
